    WELLWOOD, Arnold A. - Passed away in Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ont., on Thursday, December 7, 2007, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Leila (Parker) Wellwood; brother, Edgar Harris Wellwood, and sister, Dorothy Wellwood. Arnold grew up in Hantsport and graduated from Acadia University (B.Sc., M.Sc.). After marrying Fran in 1942, they moved to Montreal where he taught at McGill University. During the war, his research focused on an alternative plant-based fuel. They later moved to Guelph, Ont., where he taught at Ontario Agricultural College (University of Guelph). In 1956 he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., with a Ph.D. in genetics. From 1958-60, Arnold and his family lived in Nigeria where he developed a high-yielding type of corn. After teaching at the University of Connecticut, he returned to Canada to teach at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. in the Biology Department (1963-80). He and Fran spent their retirement in Kentville. They enjoyed their summers at their cottage in Grand Pré and many winters in Florida, more recently returning to Kitchener to live. Arnold was an avid photographer and enjoyed playing in a musical recorder group, woodworking and participating in the annual bird census. He was a past member of First Baptist Church, Guelph, where he sang in the choir, Highland Baptist Church, Kitchener, and Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot. A memorial service will be held in Winston Park Retirement Home in Kitchener at a later date.

    Arnold married Frances Ethel Hutchinson on 26 Sep 1942 in Avonport, Kings, Nova Scotia. Frances (daughter of Emmerson Ralph Hutchinson and Iona Mildred Barron) was born in 1918 in Kellyville, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 23 Dec 2009 in Kitchener, Ontario. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    BROOKE (Wellwood), Harriett Joyce — Passed away in Valley Re­gional Hospital, Kentville on January 26, 2011. She was born on July 15, 1934 in Windsor. Family moved frequently and schooling was in Windsor, Liver­pool, Montreal, and Fairview. Graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School, Hali­fax. Worked casu­ally from an early age, including ACA, New Minas, Simpson’s, Hali­fax, one year con­tact in Labrador with US Air Force. Moved to Toronto in 1957 and joined the Canadian Gas Association, a national association representing all facets of the Cana­dian gas industry and including a Cer­tification Laboratory for gas applianc­es, equipment and apparatus (a CSA equivalent) and a Gas Research Labo­ratory. Over the next 40 years ending as Vice-President, Member Services and Corporate Secretary. For 12 years, served as the Secretariat with CGA, chairing Technical Committees of the World Gas Association, an orga­nization of 46 member countries. Meetings held twice yearly sponsored by the member countries in Europe and other countries, and work culmi­nated every three years in a World Gas Conference of some 4000 dele­gates from around the world. Follow­ing retirement from Canadian Gas As­sociation in 2000, Joyce moved back to Hantsport, where most of her family members grew up. Married to Robert Gordon Brooke of 40 years (deceased in 2000); and her stepson, Robert W. Brooke (deceased at age 43). Joyce wanted to particularly thank her siblings, their spouses, niec­es and nephews for their love and sup­port, friends in Hantsport, and many business associates from across Cana­da and in other countries that she trav­eled to, for their support, kindness and for the many fond memories she had during a long lifetime. Joyce was a lover of all things in nature - particu­larly bird habits and their songs. Joyce was always willing to contrib­ute to local churches and charitable organizations in town. Joyce loved gourmet cooking and delighted many people throughout her life with the many wonderful meals and desserts she so lovingly prepared. She was grateful to friends in Hantsport and her mother’s siblings. She felt her mother, Dorothy Wellwood who prede­ceased her, was the rock of her life and her close relationship with her was so cherished.
