    Notes:

    Died:
PAYZANT (Beckwith), Sadie Belle — 102, lifelong resident of Bishopville, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Born on November 19, 1907, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Annabelle (Riley) Beckwith. After completing high school in Hantsport, she found employment as a \'Nanny\' and housemaid in Windsor for five years. Sadie moved to Boston, Mass. for the next four years, where she continued working in her chosen profession. In 1929 with the \'Great Depression\' looming Allen Payzant made his way to Boston and convinced Sadie to return to Nova Scotia with him to become his bride. Sadie and Allen purchased a farm in Bishopville where they worked side by side clearing land, growing crops and raising livestock to sustain their new family. Like their hearts, the door of their house was always open, providing a home for family, school teachers and hired help. Sadie was often called upon to mother babies, toddlers and youngsters in addition to raising her own boys. Increasingly, Sadie became famous for her award-winning pies, bread and rolls, preserves and fancy work in local exhibitions. Her outstanding quilts were highly sought after, as every thread was painstakingly stitched by her talented hands. She was always proud to display her many ribbons and awards which were won by her at local county exhibitions throughout the province. Sadie was a founding member of the Bishopville Daisy Club. This club became the hub of activity when it purchased the former \'Little Red Schoolhouse\' and was renovated into the community hall. Sadie was instrumental in organizing a committee to restore the Bishopville Cemetery and she worked diligently to keep the doors to the Bishopville Church open. Sadie was a lifetime member of Hantsport Baptist Church, where she sat on many committees over the years. She was also a member of the Hantsport Elders Project and had always taken a heartfelt interest in the welfare of others. Above all else, her love and devotion to her family always shone through. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Allen (1963); infant son, Frederick; son, Clyde (1998); daughter-in-law, Shirley (1999); granddaughter-in-law, Kristine (2000); brothers, George, James and Stanley; sisters, Lena, Ruby, Jesse and Ida. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 20, in Hantsport Baptist Church, (corner of Willow and Main Streets) Hantsport, Rev. Daniel Jamer officiating, followed by burial in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. A reception will follow in Hantsport Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sadie may be made to Bishopville Cemetery.

    Died:
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, John William Payzant, 90, of Bedford, Nova Scotia, on February 9th, 2021. He was born to parents, Allen Godfrey and Sadie Belle Payzant, on June 25th, 1930. He was predeceased by his parents, his beautiful wife, Shirley Elizabeth (Elliott), two brothers, Allen Frederick Payzant and Clyde Andrew Payzant and granddaughter, Tara Dawn Payzant.

How does one summarize the life of this man? Dad left the family farm at the tender age of fourteen, to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a successful businessman, with a grade nine education. Beginning his work life earning $18 a week, at a furniture store in Windsor, Nova Scotia, he quickly realized after marrying the love of his life, Shirley, in 1951, and with the addition of their first child, that he needed to do better. They moved to Lr. Sackville in 1952, to begin working for Ted B. Blackburn at Blackburn Shopping Centre, one of the first shopping malls in the province. After years of hard work and gleaning many valuable business tips from Blackburn, Dad purchased the basement of the Blackburn building and established a hardware store. In 1969, Dad had built that business to a level that allowed him to build a new store on Sackville Drive, where it still operates today. In 1970, he joined ranks with the Home Hardware family of stores, largely due to the company’s guiding ethic- that community and the common good is simply good business. Dad did business in an “old fashioned” way, built on the philosophy of maintaining a good relationship with his customers. When the local housing boom started in the early 1970’s, he extended credit to many young families, who could not otherwise afford to to pay for all of the building materials they needed, all at once. Lending a helping hand was commonplace for Dad, having a generous and compassionate heart for those who needed a hand up. Those early years were hard work, where he regularly logged 70 hours a week, and even if the store was closed, the phone would ring from someone with an urgent need for something, and off he would go to unlock the door and fill that need for his customer. Dad served in many groups and committees, some of which include the Kinsmen Club of Sackville, the Lake District Recreation Association, the Sackville Chamber of Commerce and was a 40 year member of the the Atlantic Building Supply Dealers Association, where he served as chairman in 1989/90. Many would say that our Dad helped to build Sackville to what it is today. Words we have heard from many of his friends and acquaintances, describe him as, a true gentleman, community builder and leader, icon of Sackville, pillar, helper, Sackville advocate, hands on, down to earth, fair. A man who gave from his heart, a great friend, whose kindness benefited so many. Our father has left a rich legacy, considering his greatest wealth to be his family. Dad never forgot his roots and deep love for his parents small family farm in Bishopville, Nova Scotia. Every weekend, we would make the drive to his family homestead where we as children, loved to play and explore “the farm”, helping feed the cows, while visiting with Gram and our Uncle Clyde. His grandchildren and great grandchildren all still love and enjoy the family property, that he so lovingly preserved for us. Dad has instilled in us the importance of honesty, hard work, fairness, generosity, supporting local business and most of all, family. We are beyond blessed to have had this gentle man to call “Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad. We have lost a
great patriarch and we will love you forever, Dad.

    Died:
Frederic (Fred) Allen Patterson, 91 of Coldbrook Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at Valley Regional Hospital on April 26, 2022. He was born in Wolfville Nova Scotia, to the late Evelyn (Harvie) and Everett Patterson on March 4, 1931. He was the youngest son, and second youngest from a family of 6. Growing up during WW2, he loved to play baseball and he watched 3 of his older brothers go off and serve, but he was still too young to go by the time the war ended.

He had various jobs at a young age, including working in the Hantsport NS lumber mill, but he soon found his calling as he watched the United States Gypsum Company ships go up and down the Avon River into Hantsport. Sometime, in the early 1950’s he decided to head to the shipping office to see if they would have him. In about a weeks’ time he was on a ship that would ultimately take him places up and down the eastern seaboard, as far as Mexico, for close to the next 25 years. He ended up serving on a good number of the ships in the fleet and continued to go to school to eventually earn a marine engineering ticket and later, his Stationary Engineering certification. After retiring from the US Gypsum Company in the mid 1970’s, he went to work for Avon Valley Greenhouses in Falmouth NS, helping to run and maintain their boiler systems and plant maintenance. In 1977, he was asked to relocate, and become the plant manager for Scotia Greenhouses in Woodville NS, where he remained until his retirement in 2006 at the age of 75. He was a person of many talents when it came to fixing or building anything mechanical or electrical.

In his younger days he was an avid hunter and snowmobiler and later in life at age 70, he bought his first of several boats that he completely refurbished and used for fishing flounder and mackerel. He always enjoyed watching hockey and baseball and was a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens.

He was predeceased by his wife Marie, and son Frederick Jr., along with his sister Jean and brothers Gordon, Frank, and Arthur.

The family would like to thank the many health care professionals at Valley Regional Hospital who worked hard to keep Fred comfortable during his final days.

By request there will be no service and cremation has already taken place.

    Notes:

    Died:
SANFORD, Maine - Helen King Dostie, a retired financial executive known for her kindness and wit, died of Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the age of 74.

Helen King Dostie was born on January 12, 1940, in Farmington, New Hampshire, to Osee Mae Salter King and James Henry King. Her father was a woodsman and her mother a seamstress and dressmaker; they lived in the tiny town of Tamworth, with Helen's two brothers, Carl and Fred, where the children were instilled with the values of strong work ethic, quality of work, community support, friendship and family. Helen graduated eighth grade from the one-room, single teacher, school house in Tamworth, and soon after moved, with her family, to Sanford, Maine, where she graduated from Sanford High School in 1957.

On August 6, 1960, Helen married Roland Dostie. They were married for 40 years, lived in Sanford and had two daughters together; Debra and Diane. After graduating from high school, Helen received an Associate Degree in 1959 from Nasson College, in Springvale, Maine. Following college, Helen began working full time at the Sanford Savings and Loan Association as an accounting clerk and resigned 22 years later as Vice President and Corporate Secretary. In December, 1981, Mrs. Dostie went to work for NRG Barriers, Inc., a small manufacturer of roofing insulation located in Sanford. After 15 years of service with the company, Helen retired in April, 1996, then the company's Assistant Controller. This allowed her to focus on her greatest love, her family. Helen was thankful for her early retirement, as it allowed her and her husband to enjoy four years of retirement together before Roland's passing in November, 2000.

Over the years Helen and her husband and their family enjoyed many summers at cottages on Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine, and Schoodic Lake in Lakeview Plantation, Maine. Helen and her husband also enjoyed a trip of a lifetime together in 1981, three weeks in Scotland and England. Helen loved to travel, and she did so extensively with several close friends and family after her husband's passing. Places Helen traveled included Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, South Dakota, Washington, Nevada, many parts of Canada, the Panama Canal, the Mediterranean, all parts of Europe, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera and South America. For several years she also enjoyed time during the winter in Florida with family. Her final trip was taken one year ago to Las Vegas with her daughters, sister-in-law and a niece. The quintet toured all over the city, saw shows and gambled a bit, and of course, Helen was the biggest winner.

Mrs. Dostie was a member of the Nasson College Alumni Association and spent many hours volunteering for the group after her retirement. She was a member of the board of directors and served as the Financial Secretary for several years. In October, 2000, Helen was presented the "Distinguished Alumni Award" for her many contributions.

When not spending time with family, or traveling, or volunteering, Helen's favorite pastime was following sports. She had an amazing memory and could talk sports statistics with the best of the avid fans she knew. She loved baseball, football, basketball and NASCAR. In February, 2010, she attended the Daytona 500 with her brother-in-law and three nephews. At the event she instructed the nephews on the finer points of NASCAR and they were impressed with the breadth of their New England aunt's knowledge of NASCAR's history and drivers.

Of her life Helen said, "I feel fortunate to be able to enjoy my family. The grand children are a joy and I look forward to attending their many programs and sporting events. I have many good friends and feel keeping busy is important. Life is good!"

Helen is predeceased by her husband, Roland Dostie, brother Carl (Dint) Pulsifer, brother Frederick Pulsifer and wife Carolyn, sister-in-law Charline Frink and husband John.
