BISHOP, Thomas Bernard \'Bernie\' — Age 68, of Lower Sackville, passed away February 6, 2011, in Cobequid Medical Centre. Born in Windsor, and raised in Hantsport, he was a son of the late Richard Bishop Sr. and Florence (McPhee). Bernie worked as a salesman in the flooring industry for over 40 years, beginning with Ottawa Valley Lumber (Canfor) and retiring from Centura in 2003. In recent years, he worked periodically for Enviro Master’s Lawn Care and at the time of his death was an instructor with New Bridge Academy hockey school. Besides his work, his passion was his family and hockey. He began his hockey career in his hometown and played competitively at the junior, intermediate and senior league levels throughout the province. For the past 35 years, Bernie played recreational hockey for numerous local teams. He was proud to be a member of the USA Michigan Sting, helping them win numerous national championships. In 2008 he organized a Halifax \'Old Timers\' team. As their player/coach, Bernie led the hometown team to a world championship. He coached minor hockey in Kentville and later with the Sackville Minor Hockey Association, where he also served as an executive member of the Sackville Jr. \'B\' Blazers. Bernie’s enthusiasm for the sport was passed on to his three sons who all played junior hockey. In the mid 1970’s he ventured into the harness racing world. His prized horse, Midnight Glib, set track records at Sackville Downs and Foxborough, Mass. As a \'grampy\', he received immense joy from the time spent with his precious grandchildren, especially around the family pool. Bernie was a dedicated supporter of Canadian Blood Services and in 2006 received recognition for 150 donations.

    Notes:

    Died:
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Zelda Louise (Starratt) McLellan, from Hantsport, on July 27, 2020, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, with loved ones by her side. Born in Hantsport, on April 26, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt and wife of the late Ivan (Whitey) McLellan.

Zelda was a very energetic lady who loved family, animals, music, people, and baseball. Zelda and Whitey were inseparable baseball icons who could be seen at ballparks anywhere in the Maritimes all the way to St. Petersburg, Florida! There are many stories told of more than one umpire, from Hantsport Shamrocks to Kentville Wildcat games, who would yell from behind home plate, “OK, Whitey and Zelda are here, let’s play ball!”

Her energies took her and the family twice to live in the States; Worcester, Mass. and St. Petersburg, Florida. Zelda spent most of her life in her beloved Hantsport as a homemaker and instilled a sense of love and pride in her children and expected nothing but best efforts from them. Her determination was evident when she went to work at the Drug Store in Hantsport long enough to make the money required to have a swimming pool installed in her backyard on William Street! Whitey, who couldn’t swim a stroke, would walk home from his FINA station on Main Street and have a dip before enjoying the lunch she always had ready.

Zelda loved music and especially enjoyed family/friend sing songs whether it was at home, the church, or at the camp in Bishopville! Her eyes would light up at the sight of any dog or cat and she had multiple combinations of both during her life. In later years she absolutely adored her little Shih Tzu, Rascal, and could be seen walking him through the streets of Hantsport.

Zelda was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt; husband, Ivan (Whitey) McLellan and brother, Wilbur Starratt and granddaughter, Keri Price.

There will be no public service or visitation upon Zelda’s request. A private graveside ceremony will take place at the Riverbank Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Zelda may be made to Dykeland Lodge, Hantsport Baptist Church Building Fund, or charity of choice.

Family/Spouse: Ivan Sinclair McLellan. Ivan (son of William McLellan and Pearl Smith) was born on 9 Jul 1929 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island; died on 11 Sep 2015 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    STARRATT, Wilbur Hedley

Of Sackville. It is with sad hearts we announce Wilbur’s passing on June 16, 2020 peacefully at home with loved ones close by. Born in Hantsport, on November 30, 1933, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt. During his lifetime he wore many hats including: Mechanic, Carpenter, Entrepreneur, Teacher, Counsellor, Chairman of KCSB, Assistant Engineer-Gypsum Boats, Mechanical Superintendent-National Gypsum, Wheeler Dealer, Owner/Operator of a General Store and two Service Stations. Wilbur settled into semi-retirement during winter in Arizona, enjoying the hot dry climate golfing and meeting new friends. Out-going by nature, he was quick witted with a playful sense of humour, strong work ethic, a commitment to fair play and a deep love of country music. He was one of the founding members of the band "Ebb Tide" that became well-known on the Shore and surrounding area for their dances, fundraisers and entertaining in Seniors’ facilities. A jam session always occurred whenever family or friends dropped by. In his early years he was heavily involved with playing hockey and baseball for local teams. He played for, and later coached, the Hantsport Shamrocks when they won the Eastern Senior A Men’s Baseball Championship in 1961. Family was especially important to Wilbur. Gatherings, special occasions, and reunions were always filled with music, laughter, and good food. He taught important life skills such as his commonsense attitude, wisdom, honesty, compassion for and love of animals and farming. If questioned he would reply, "I may not be right, but I am never wrong." Wilbur was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Wilbur was predeceased by daughter, Ruth Ann Bernard; son-in-law, Alan Levy; brother-in-law, Ivan (Whitey) Mclellan. Due to current Nova Scotia Health regulations concerning Covid-19 Virus a private family interment will be held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sackville. Donations in memory of Wilbur made be made to Hantsport Shamrocks, Hantsport Baptist Church Building Fund, or charity of choice.

    Notes:

    Died:
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tammy Lynn (McLellan) Doucet, age 65, of Belliveau Cove, NS. Tammy passed away on July 27, 2023 at her home in Belliveau Cove with family at her side after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born May 16, 1958, in Windsor, Nova Scotia she was the daughter of the late Ivan (Whitey) and Zelda (Starratt) McLellan.

Tammy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, as well as a kind sister, and a wonderful friend to all who knew her. She made friendships easily wherever she went. She had a love for animals, especially dogs and horses. Growing up in Hantsport, Tammy loved to ride and care for her horse, “Clipper”, never complaining about the “chores”. Kiwi, her loving canine friend, was by her side from the day she brought her home and a constant companion during her illness.

Tammy lived in Red Deer, Alberta for several years where her two boys were born. She returned to Hantsport, always considered home, maintaining many close friendships. With her sons Jeremy and Jacob, Tammy made a move to Saint John, NB, to take a job with Moosehead Breweries, where they lived for a number of years.

Tammy loved music! To play it, sing it or watch it, it didn’t matter. She enjoyed music festivals and met her husband, Tony, at a blue grass event!

She loved to travel but Covid-19 restrictions and cancer disrupted her plans to spend her retirement winters in Florida. Tammy was always at peace at the beach!

Her grandson Haylen was an incredible joy in her life, celebrating all his achievements with great pride.

Tammy could always find the positive in people, and was quick to compliment their strengths. She would often say, “Life is too short to be doing something you don’t like!”

The family appreciates and truly thank the many people who visited, shared memories, laughed, cried and cared for her during her illness! A very special thank you to the VON and Canadian Red Cross for their compassion and professionalism.
