ROGERS (Tracey), Bertha Marion — Of the Windsor Elms, Falmouth, formerly of Lockhartville, Kings Co., passed away at the age of 94 on Tues­day, November 27, 2012. Born in Lock­hartville on October 12, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Edward \'Elisha\' Tracey and Osa (Davidson). She was predeceased by her husband, Manford; her son, John; her daughter-in-law, Monique. Bertha was the last surviving member of her fam­ily, being predeceased by sisters and brothers, Evelyn Schofield, Bessie Schofield, Leora Vaughan, Jessie Schofield, Minnie Schofield, Mary Schofield, Hilda Keddy, Leroy, Arden and Aubrey and also Robert in in­fancy. Bertha took great pride in homemaking and was an excellent baker, quilt-maker and did lovely em­broidery. She was very involved in the local community and Lockhartville United Baptist Church. She was a member of the Lockhartville Sewing Circle, the Thimble Six Quilters, the Women’s Institute and the Minas Waves Seniors Group, with whom she travelled and participated in many events. She visited several areas, in­cluding Nashville, Costa Rica, Illinois, Magdalen Islands, Labrador, and many places in Western Canada. The family thanks the wonderful staff at Windsor Elms for their compassionate care over the last several years, along with the chaplaincy, Debra Mosher, and the Rev. Gail Whalen-Dunn of Stoney Hill United Baptist Church, Lockhartville. Interment will be in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. GUPTELL, Lova Elaine
Age 96, of Windsor/Hantsport, passed away peacefully April 19, 2014 in Dykeland Lodge in Wind­sor. She had been a resident there for the past eight years. Born March 28, 1918, in Lockhartville, to the late George and Eva (Boyd) Tracey, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was pre­deceased by brothers and sisters-in­-law, Russell (Mary), Merton (Pauline), George (Louise), Glenn (Evangeline), Lawrence (Bessie); sis­ters and brothers-in-law, Gladys (John) Shaw and Leah (Justin) King and half-brother, Murray Penny. Lova had a lifelong love of music and dancing. In her senior years, she played piano and fiddle for several groups and could often be found in the Dykeland great room playing a few tunes for her fellow residents. Her hobbies included oil painting, playing cards, crafting, and quilting. She created beautiful quilts for her children and grand­children as a memory piece for years to come. Private family interment will be held in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.

TRACEY, George Alton — 88, of Halifax, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, Halifax. Born on October 2, 1920, at home, in Hants Border, he was the son of the late George and Eva (Boyd) Tracey. In 1942 George joined the army and saw active duty overseas with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, returning home on October 1, 1945. He had a varied working life including 12 years at Minas Basin Pulp and Paper and eventually retired from his own business, Tracey’s Hardware, which he and Louise ran from 1965-1977. George was very active in his community. He served with the Hantsport Fire Department for 19 years and was a member of the Hantsport Historical Society. He was also a long-time member of the Poyntz Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M. Hantsport, becoming Master in 1968. George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Funeral service will be held in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Hantsport, 1 p.m., Saturday, August 1, Rev. Michael Boyd officiating. Burial will follow the service in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, immediately followed by a reception in the church hall.

Leah was an active member of the Lockhartville community and church, serving on committees, choir, Sunday school and sewing circle. She was an avid quilter who took great pride in her work and was a charter member of the Minas Waves Seniors. She and her husband, Jetney enjoyed raising their own veg­etables and she never missed an op­portunity to pick fresh fruit, ensuring her freezer and cupboards were al­ways full with delicious jams, pre­serves and desserts. Leah loved pre­paring meals and treats for family, boarders and friends. With her ready wit and great sense of humour, Leah was always ready to have a good time. She loved music and she and Jetney enjoyed playing cards and dancing in­to their 80s. She was prede­ceased by her husband, Justin \'Jet­ney\'; siblings, Gladys (Shaw), Russ, Mert, George and Glen Tracey; and half-brother, Murray Penny.

Age 93, of Hantsport, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born November 27, 1926 in Avonport, Verna was a daughter of the late William and Agnes (Smith) Tracey.

Verna started work as a teenager at a hotel in Hantsport, then went on to work at the Yeaton’s Candy Factory. She said she liked the products they made way too much. Verna was a member of the New Minas Waves Senior Group and an adherent of the Hantsport Baptist Church. She loved to go to all the craft shows. Verna also loved to crochet and knit in her spare time, and her work was beautiful. She had a big heart and was a loving mother.

Besides her parents, Verna was predeceased by husband, Arthur; daughter, Judith; brother, Blake and son-in-law, Garnet Mason.

Age 81, of Middleton, passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Heart Of The Valley Long Term Care Centre, Middleton where she spent the last 4 ½ years of her life. Mom embraced death as she lived life, with grace, dignity and love. Born December 20, 1936 in Bishopville, she was the daughter of the late Charles Havelock and Lena Evelyn (Harvey) Starratt. Mom was a woman of faith, with many talents, interests and a love of learning, even returning to school to study secretarial in her thirties. Her hands were always busy; cooking, baking, quilting, sewing, needlework, knitting and her passion, which was painting. She loved spending time with family and friends at her cottages. Mom, the thirteenth child of fourteen, always had an understanding of those less fortunate and helped others whenever she was able. Her interests had her involved in many different organizations over her lifetime. She was a member of the Windsor Jaycettes, Windsor and Middleton Curling Clubs, founder and member of the 14th Palette in Fall River, an honourary member of the Annapolis Valley Decorative Artists, a charter member of the United Church Women’s UCW and a member of the Junior Women\'s’ Association in Hantsport, as well as those organizations of the United Church, Windsor Junction. She was also a founding member of the Emmanuel Congregational Christian Church, Middleton and served as an Elder for several years. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mom loved people; was a wonderful storyteller which led her to be involved in her school theatre. She worked with handicapped children and worked at the Payzant Hospital, Windsor in the physiotherapy department. Later in her life, she founded and started Valley Introduction Services, the first of its kind in the Annapolis Valley. Janet was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by sisters, Ceva, Dora, Nina, Woodforn \'Honey\', Lily-Mae, Alwen and Irma; brothers, Ralph, Charles \'Bus\', Victor, Star and Herman.

Audrey’s kind spirit was felt by all, she touched so many lives with her kindness and unwavering help to those in need. She will always be remembered for the devotion that she had for her family. She enjoyed vol­unteering, playing her songs to oth­er seniors, knitting, sewing, crafting, bingo, travelling with the Dartmouth Seniors Center and was well-known for her cooking and baking bread. POIRIER, Anna Catherine — 79, Hantsport, passed away Sunday, De­cember 23, 2012, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Hant­sport, she was a daughter of the late Malcolm and Lela (Starratt) McNeil. Anna studied at the Maritime Busi­ness College, graduating as a secreta­ry. She later worked for the base com­mander at CFB Greenwood. Anna taught swimming lessons in both Greenwood and Hantsport. She was a member of St. Mary’s Ladies Guild and also taught religious education. Anna loved to spend time gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John McNeil.

It is with immense sadness the family of Robert Quenton "Bob" Starratt, age 75, of New Minas, announces his sudden passing at home on Friday, November 18, 2022. Born in Windsor, he was the son of the late Roy and Isabelle (Pearson) Starratt.

Prior to retirement, Bob worked as a plater on submarines at the HMC Dockyard for 30 years. While he lived most of his life in the Hantsport area, they made the move further up the valley to New Minas 17 years ago to be closer to their beloved grandchildren. Bob was an avid horse lover and either owned them or was around them from a very young age. He met many of his closest friends for life through horses. Bob has been a member of the Poyntz Masonic Lodge No. 44 since 2003, having achieved the rank of Past Master.

A combined masonic and funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 24, 2022 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2022 in the Scott’s Bay Cemetery, Scott’s Bay.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Zelda Louise (Starratt) McLellan, from Hantsport, on July 27, 2020, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, with loved ones by her side. Born in Hantsport, on April 26, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt and wife of the late Ivan (Whitey) McLellan.

Zelda was a very energetic lady who loved family, animals, music, people, and baseball. Zelda and Whitey were inseparable baseball icons who could be seen at ballparks anywhere in the Maritimes all the way to St. Petersburg, Florida! There are many stories told of more than one umpire, from Hantsport Shamrocks to Kentville Wildcat games, who would yell from behind home plate, “OK, Whitey and Zelda are here, let’s play ball!”

Her energies took her and the family twice to live in the States; Worcester, Mass. and St. Petersburg, Florida. Zelda spent most of her life in her beloved Hantsport as a homemaker and instilled a sense of love and pride in her children and expected nothing but best efforts from them. Her determination was evident when she went to work at the Drug Store in Hantsport long enough to make the money required to have a swimming pool installed in her backyard on William Street! Whitey, who couldn’t swim a stroke, would walk home from his FINA station on Main Street and have a dip before enjoying the lunch she always had ready.

Zelda loved music and especially enjoyed family/friend sing songs whether it was at home, the church, or at the camp in Bishopville! Her eyes would light up at the sight of any dog or cat and she had multiple combinations of both during her life. In later years she absolutely adored her little Shih Tzu, Rascal, and could be seen walking him through the streets of Hantsport.

Zelda was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt; husband, Ivan (Whitey) McLellan and brother, Wilbur Starratt and granddaughter, Keri Price.

There will be no public service or visitation upon Zelda’s request. A private graveside ceremony will take place at the Riverbank Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Zelda may be made to Dykeland Lodge, Hantsport Baptist Church Building Fund, or charity of choice.

STARRATT, Wilbur Hedley

Of Sackville. It is with sad hearts we announce Wilbur’s passing on June 16, 2020 peacefully at home with loved ones close by. Born in Hantsport, on November 30, 1933, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt. During his lifetime he wore many hats including: Mechanic, Carpenter, Entrepreneur, Teacher, Counsellor, Chairman of KCSB, Assistant Engineer-Gypsum Boats, Mechanical Superintendent-National Gypsum, Wheeler Dealer, Owner/Operator of a General Store and two Service Stations. Wilbur settled into semi-retirement during winter in Arizona, enjoying the hot dry climate golfing and meeting new friends. Out-going by nature, he was quick witted with a playful sense of humour, strong work ethic, a commitment to fair play and a deep love of country music. He was one of the founding members of the band "Ebb Tide" that became well-known on the Shore and surrounding area for their dances, fundraisers and entertaining in Seniors’ facilities. A jam session always occurred whenever family or friends dropped by. In his early years he was heavily involved with playing hockey and baseball for local teams. He played for, and later coached, the Hantsport Shamrocks when they won the Eastern Senior A Men’s Baseball Championship in 1961. Family was especially important to Wilbur. Gatherings, special occasions, and reunions were always filled with music, laughter, and good food. He taught important life skills such as his commonsense attitude, wisdom, honesty, compassion for and love of animals and farming. If questioned he would reply, "I may not be right, but I am never wrong." Wilbur was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Wilbur was predeceased by daughter, Ruth Ann Bernard; son-in-law, Alan Levy; brother-in-law, Ivan (Whitey) Mclellan. Due to current Nova Scotia Health regulations concerning Covid-19 Virus a private family interment will be held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sackville. He was a loving son, broth­er, husband, uncle and a friend to all. He was an active member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, serving for many years with the Anglican Cur­sillo Movement and Alpha Program. Clyde enjoyed playing his guitar and brought joy by playing with a group of Christian friends at the VON Adult Day Care and Grand View Manor, Ber­wick. He had a hobby collecting postcards. SCHOFIELD, Helen Orena
Age 82 years of Windsor, passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2013, in Hants Community Hospital. Born in Windsor Forks on February 9th, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Aubrey and Evelyn (Tracey) Schofield. Helen worked for many years as a seamstress at the Windsor Textile Mill and loved to knit and sew. She hand­made many hats and pairs of socks for her family and friends. She loved to play cards and spend time with her special friends and close family. Prede­ceased by her parents, Aubrey and Evelyn; brothers, Doug, Harley, Earl and Ervin; sister, Myrna Weston; broth­ers- in-law, Raymond and Wilbert and sister-in-law, Pauline. In keeping with Helen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in Riverbank Cemetery in Hantsport on Friday, May 31st at 2 p.m. with Pas­tor Craig Faulkner officiating.

Burt Alonzo Schofield, passed away peacefully early on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Born in Windsor Forks on June 12, 1936, he was the son of the late Aubrey and Evelyn (Tracey) Schofield.

Burt was a carpenter by trade and by hobby. He was also an avid yard sale and flea market attendee with a collection that is both eclectic and extensive. He was a devoted gardener with a very green thumb and loved to share the bounty of his gardens and fruit trees with family and friends. In years past, he enjoyed hunting, four wheeling and going to his camp. His love of hunting may have led to his collection of deer antlers, that has been admired by so many.

He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Rolfe); brothers Harley, Douglas, Carl, Earl, Ervin and Milton; sisters Myrna, Madeline and Helen.

The family would like to thank the staff of Unit 500 at the Hants Community Hospital for their care and kindness over the past few months.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Vaughans Community Cemetery followed by a reception at the SouthWest Hants Fire Hall in Vaughans.

Vivian Rowena Shaw
Of Windsor Forks, passed away peacefully in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the age of 81. Born on September 9, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Aubrey and Evelyn (Tracey) Schofield.

Vivian was a hard worker, from picking corn in the fields with her best friend, Juanita, to milking cows when she was eight months pregnant, to looking after her kids and grandkids. She and David enjoyed traveling with family and friends all over the Atlantic Provinces.

Besides her parents, Vivian was predeceased by her husband, David; a son in infancy; grandson, Patrick Shaw and all of her siblings.

Hilda Hariett Murphy
Age 78, of Cheverie, died peacefully, with her family by her side, in Haliburton Place, Hants Community Hospital, Windsor on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Born in Avonport, January 7, 1943, she was a loving daughter of the late Harry Elias and Jessie Mildred (Tracey) Schofield.

Mom was the most caring, loving woman you’d ever want to meet. She was at ease striking up a conversation with a total stranger. She loved life, people, music, her annual August Potluck on her deck for friends and family, shopping, selling her cushions and most of all, her kids. Never once did she ever hang up the phone or walk out the door without kissing us and telling us she loved us. Mention road trip or restaurant and she was the first one in the car, especially loving her many trips to the states with Carter and Valerie. Always coming back with a new purse and watch, no matter how many times she was there. Having had many health problems from the day she was born, she never let it get in her way. She had two children to raise on her own and money had to be earned.

Besides her loving parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Vaughan; sister, Blanche Schofield; brothers, Arnold, Merton and Clint; brothers-in-law, Ross Keeling and Sonny Swinamer and sister-in-law, Yvonne Schofield.

Roscoe Albert SCHOFIELD — Falmouth

Age 78 of Falmouth, passed away peacefully January 2nd, with family at his side. Born in Avonport, he was a son of the late Harry and Jessie (Tracey) Schofield. Besides his parents, Roscoe is predeceased by his sisters, Blanche, Hilda and Nancy; his brothers, Arnold, Merton and Clinton. Roscoe was a member of the Windsor Fire Department for 20 years retiring as Captain. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 009 for 26 years, serving as past President, executive member, as well as an integral member of many other committees. Among the many service awards he received over the years, he was recognized by the Canadian Red Cross for having donated blood well over 100 times. Roscoe was an avid hunter, fisherman and general outdoorsman and his favorite pastime was his many trips to Cape Breton, moose hunting with his buddies, staying in his hand-crafted hunting camp. In addition to the homes and apartment buildings he constructed throughout Windsor, Falmouth and the Halifax area, Roscoe was well known for his special projects. He took extra pride in his custom designs which included building a 30-foot pirate ship, a boxing ring, toys for his grandchildren and his most popular project, a replica of the Windmill Canteen in Falmouth. You could drive around Nova Scotia and recognize his custom-built screen doors and lawn furniture. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 1-3 p.m. in Royal Canadian Legion, 35 Empire Ln., Windsor.

John Llewellyn Tracey

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of a loving husband and father on February 16, 2021 in Victoria, B.C. John was born on May 25, 1936 in Hantsport to Merton and Pauline (Greene). He was also predeceased by his beloved son, Jeffrey; and grandson, Cole. He was an outgoing, friendly and generous man who enjoyed interacting with others and could talk for hours if given the chance. He enjoyed playing hockey and did so until his later years. One of his favourite activities was exploring unfamiliar roads, which on one trip, led us into a seedy part of Boston but, unfazed, found his way out. It was pre-GPS but he had an excellent sense of direction and always seemed to be able navigate unknown territory. John gave a hundred percent to all things of interest to him and was especially proud of the 100 dairy cattle herd he built up. He was an avid reader and problem solver, somehow being able, most of the time, to come up with a solution to difficulties. "Cowboy logic" he'd say. He also spent many years in the construction business, working pipeline in Ontario and later working for the Town of Hantsport and also doing individual projects. John loved getting phone calls from his children of whom he was so proud. Since moving to British Columbia, he kept in touch with family and friends in Nova Scotia, and he and his cousin, Albert, were on the phone many times as they had established a close bond in childhood. Many thanks to all those at Royal Jubilee Hospital who had some part in taking such good care of John. You were so kind and helpful and it was very much appreciated.

Judy had an avid love for horses, she loved to crochet afghans and doilies for her friends and family as well as cooking and baking.
