    Garnet was the third of seven sons of the late Ernest Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. Born in Parrsboro, he attended school there and later graduated from Moncton Business College. In his late teens, Garnet worked for a brief period at the Royal Bank of Canada in Parrsboro. In June 1943, Garnet joined Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company Limited of Hantsport, where he worked for 50 years, permanently retiring in June 1993. Starting as timekeeper, Garnet worked in various divisions of Minas Basin Pulp and Power, eventually becoming Vice-president, President and Chairman of the Board. In public life, Garnet served four years as a member of the Hantsport Town Council. In 1977, he became mayor of Hantsport, a position he held for nine years. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Hantsport Fire Department from 1943 to 1968. He remained an avid supporter of the HFD throughout his life.
    Garnet also served as President of the Hantsport and Area Historical Society. His business career included membership in the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, serving two years as Chairman of the Paperboard section of that organization. Provincially, he served on the Board of Industrial Estates; was a member of the Nova Scotia Business Capital Corporation, Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board and Nova Scotia Forestry Advisory Committee. Garnet was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorie (Turner), in June 2004; brothers, Eugene (1971), Vernon "Bill" (1973), and Doug (2005).

    Garnet married Doris Mildred Turner on 18 Sep 1944 in Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. Doris (daughter of Thomas Edward Turner and Rita Vivian Palmer) was born in 1922 in Hants Border, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 7 Jun 2004 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    McDADE, Gerald Oliver

    Age 92, Central Onslow, passed away on August 13, 2019 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Parrsboro, April 7, 1927, he was a son of the late E. Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Janice; and brothers, Doug, Gene, Garnet, Bill, Bruce and Eric. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Growing up in Parrsboro, he worked at a variety of jobs including in the family business, McDade Lumber. It was during this time that he met and married Eudora. They raised their family in Lower Sackville and Gerald worked in the automotive field and in later years, for Canada Post. He worked part-time in the pari-mutuels at Sackville Downs Raceway and eventually owned racehorses himself. In retirement, he and Eudora moved to Tidal Bore Road in Central Onslow where Gerald loved to work in his yard and look after his horses. A Graveside Service will be held at a later date in Lower Onslow Clarke Cemetery.

    Age 89, Truro, passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, July 18, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Parrsboro, he was the seventh son of the late E. Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth \'Beth\' (Marsters); brothers, Doug, Gene, Garnet, Bill, and Bruce. Eric was an enthusiastic sports fan, having served as a past member of Truro Golf Club, Truro Tennis Club, Willow Street Little League and was involved with the Truro Junior Bearcats during the time the league was established. He was also a lover of the performing arts, having played in the Truro Concert Band for many years. Eric was an avid traveler who, along with Beth, particularly enjoyed ocean cruises and meeting new friends along the way. Interment in Riverside United Church Cemetery, Bass River.
