Alton Basil DEMINGS — New Minas

Age 92, of New Minas, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Guy and Hattie (Stonehouse) Demings. In his earlier years, Alton was employed with Minas Basin Pulp and Power and on the gypsum boats for many years. He later worked with Mitchell’s Plumbing and Heating and retired from Scotian Gold. He especially enjoyed spending time at the camp and the blueberry fields in Millvale and doing jigsaw puzzles. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Beryl Chipman, Evelyn (Robert) Walsh, Shirley Starratt, Dorothy Porter; brothers, Ronald, in infancy, Carl (Jean) and Fraser. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 13th in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.

STARRATT, Shirley Amelia

October 28, 1935 January 8, 2019. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Amelia Starratt of Leduc, Alta., at the age of 83. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Hattie (Stonehouse) Demings. She was predeceased by brothers, Ronald, Fraser and Carl; sisters, Dorothy Porter and Evelyn Walsh. Shirley was blessed with an awesome gift of music which she generously shared with her family, friends and community. Cremation has taken place and a committal service will be in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Shirley’s memory may do so to The Arthritis Society or a charity of one’s choice.

Cameron Randolph Porter, 70, of Port Williams, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023, in Valley Hospice. Cameron was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia to the late Donald and Dorothy Porter. He grew up in Hantsport and attended schools in Hantsport and Windsor. Cameron graduated from Acadia University in 1978 with a degree in Business Administration. He began an articling position with Touche Ross, but after eighteen months decided he enjoyed accounting and not auditing. Cameron worked for MAI Canada Ltd., in Dartmouth as a computer programmer before moving to Ontario where he worked for a variety of companies. Over time he worked up to a Senior Systems Analysist position, eventually starting his own business. In 1995 he returned home, continuing to work with several clients in Ontario until 2010 when he "retired". He worked on local farms, for several years, a job he enjoyed. Cameron was a member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir and was treasurer for many years. Family-only interment will be held at Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Cameron’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the medical personnel who assisted him at various times over the past year and all those who visited during his time at home. CHIPMAN, Dorothy 'Lynn' — 50, of Coldbrook. Our loving and thoughtful wife, daughter, sister, mother, grand­mother, aunt, and friend to all, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Val­ley Regional Hospital, Kentville, sur­rounded by family and friends, after a courageous bat­tle with cancer. Lynn grew up in Hants Border, Kings Co. She at­tended Horton District High School and gradu­ated from the ste­nography pro­gram at Kingstec Campus in 1980. Lynn worked at Acadia University for 33 years and became Senior Network Analyst of The Department of Tech­nology Services in 1997, then Supervi­sor of Information systems in 2008, and Manager in 2009. During her working career, Lynn studied part time and received her Certificate in Business in 1992 and Diploma in 1993. She obtained her Certificate in Com­puter Science in 1998, and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Adminis­tration in 2007 from Acadia Universi­ty. Lynn loved to travel. Her most re­cent trip was to Disneyworld, Florida last spring with her daughter, grand­daughter and spouse. Lynn selflessly gave to others. She volunteered with Big Brothers & Big Sisters and raised money for breast cancer, as well as ran several marathons, including Run for the Cure. Lynn was an avid squash player, and was President of The Kings County Squash Club in 2010 and 2011. She loved playing guitar, gar­dening, decorating, frenchy shopping, and spending time with family and friends. Lynn especially enjoyed Sun­day suppers, holidays and birthdays with family at her Mother’s house. Lynn will be remembered for her beautiful smile, disposition, and her kindness to others. Lynn was prede­ceased by her father, Walter Chipman.

Bernard-Ruth Ann, nee Starratt- 62 of Halifax, passed away peacefully at the QE2 (new Infirmary site), Halifax on December 7th, 2019. Born January 28, 1957 in Windsor, she was the daughter of Wilbur Starratt and her mother the late Shirley Starratt

Ruth Ann may have been tiny in stature, but her heart was huge. Her compassion for people and animals was selfless and her appreciation for anything that was done for her was genuine.
