    Helen Virginia Burgess

Helen passed away on Wednesday December 30, 2020 in Evergreen Home for Special Care in Kentville. Born in Sandy Cove, Digby Co., on August 7, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Margaret (Holmes) Jeffrey. She came from a large family with four brothers and three sisters. Helen graduated from Provincial Normal College (predecessor to the Nova Scotia Teachers College) in 1949. She taught in Brooklyn (Queens Co.), Sandy Cove, and finally in Hantsport where she met her future husband, Raymond Burgess. They were married on October 8, 1960. She was a devoted wife to Raymond, and mother to Grant and Lois. She never complained about the work but always had wonderful meals prepared and the house was always spotless. She never complained either when her son and his friends had band practice in the basement at extreme volumes. Thanks Mom! Above all Helen loved her God. She was an active member of Hantsport Baptist Church for many decades. She was involved with the Sunday school as well as the various ladies groups. Her particular passion was missions and she was involved with the Women's Missionary Society (WMS) for many years, preparing programs for their meetings into her early 90s. She also had a lovely voice and loved to sing; especially the old hymns that she learned in childhood from her mother. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond; daughter, Lois; brothers, Wendell, Fenwick and Phillip; and sisters, Florence, Rita and Amy. The family wishes to thank the staff at Evergreen Home for Special Care, where Helen had been living since October 2019, for their excellent and compassionate care. A private, invite only, service celebrating Helen's life will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 in Hantsport Baptist Church, Hantsport, Rev. Jennifer Riley officiating. Interment will follow in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.

Helen married Raymond Manson Burgess on 8 Oct 1960. Raymond (son of Lotan Edward Burgess and Althea V. Dalrymple) was born on 5 Jun 1915 in Highfield, Hants, Nova Scotia; died on 21 Oct 2000 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. Died:
We are sad to announce that Wendell Holmes Jeffrey, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2018, in the Veterans Unit, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in picturesque Sandy Cove, Digby County, on December 22,1921, Wendell was the second eldest of eight children. His father, Floyd Vertal, made a modest living from the sea and the land and his mother, Margaret Elizabeth (Holmes), was a teacher and organist at the local Baptist church. After graduating from Normal College, he taught in a one room school in Great Village, Nova Scotia prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. He then served his country in the RCAF during the war, and later attended Dalhousie University with the assistance of the Royal Canadian Air Force Benevolent Fund earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Subsequently, he was accepted into the Dalhousie Medical School and graduated as Doctor of Medicine serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Core as a commissioned officer during that time. He brought his young family to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, in 1953, practising medicine with great dedication, skill and compassion until his retirement. He is fondly remembered by his patients, physician colleagues, nursing staff and other health care workers. With original partner Dr. D.R. Campbell, he established the Shelburne Medical Group, one of the first group family medical centres in Nova Scotia, providing uninterrupted comprehensive medical care to the community, encompassing general medicine, obstetrics, anesthesia and surgical assistance. Despite a very busy medical practise, he was a dedicated and much loved father and husband and became the ultimate Pater Familias to his children and his grandchildren after the death of our mother, Marjorie and subsequently to his great grandchildren, never forgetting birthdays and special occasions. He also contributed to his community in other ways, serving on Shelburne Town Council and as president of the Shelburne Kiwanis Club, and was a founding member of the Shelburne County Golf and Country Club (now River Hills Golf Club). He had a lifelong love of music and sang baritone with the Shelburne men's quartet with Earle Smith, Earl Darrow and Stan West, accompanied by Dot Smith. He was predeceased by loving wife Marjorie (Hilton) Jeffrey, sister Florence (Fred) Sabean, brothers Fenwick (Laura) Jeffrey and Phillip (Helen) Jeffrey and daughter-in-law, Mary Jane (Michael) Jeffrey.

Lois graduated from Horton District High School in 1983 and subsequently obtained her B.Ed degree from Acadia University in 1987. Lois loved music especially playing the piano and singing. She was a member of the choir at Hantsport Baptist Church for many years where she was able to use her talent to its fullest.

She was a kind and compassionate person as evidenced by her many lifelong friends, some of them going back over 40 years. She also cared for her parents until her father's passing and her mother's move to a special care home.

Her strong Christian faith was evident to all those who came in contact with her, especially in these last few months. It brought her great comfort and sustained her especially at the times when she felt the worst physically.

She was predeceased by her father, Raymond.
