    • HUGHES, John W. \'Jack\' — Passed away in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII on October 25, 2011, at the age of 94. Born in Avonport, he was the son of the late William Hughes and Susan (Brooks) Hughes. He attended Avonport Elementary School and Wolfville High School graduating in 1933, then Horton Academy, Acadia University, with a degree in accounting in 1935. During his years in Wolfville schools, he played hockey and basketball. From 1935 to 1939 he was employed at various construction companies while playing hockey, basketball and softball on Avonport teams. In 1939 he went to Rhode Island and was employed with Nieforth Brothers Construction returning home in 1940 to enlist in the Canadian Army as a private. He progressed through the ranks and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942, and retired at war’s end as Lieutenant. After the Second World War, he worked in Halifax until 1948 when he purchased the general store and post office in Avonport, which he operated until 1962. He then became manager of the Canada Employment Office in Windsor, remaining there until his retirement in 1979. After his retirement, he was consulted by several authors for his knowledge of the Avonport community and his family’s involvement with the Dominion Atlantic Railway. He loved the company of family, friends and neighbours, and enjoyed a game of golf, pool, cards or a swim in the Minas Basin well into his late 80` s. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Helen Ann; infant daughter, Diann; daughters-in-law, Joyce and Dawna and an infant granddaughter, Pamela. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 28, in Lower Horton Cemetery, Grand Pré, Kings Co.
