- John Whitfield Garland, age 72, of Windsor, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at home, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Baddeck to the late Whitfield and Janice (Arenburg) Garland on October 29, 1952.
John married his high-school sweetheart, Rae (Gibson) and enjoyed 52 years of marriage. His happiest time was the time he spent with his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather, to human and fur family alike.
His professional highlights include architectural drafting on several major builds in Calgary and Nova Scotia with a few different firms, carpentry work and project management work on the St. David’s Church for the last decade of his career. Even in retirement, John always kept busy with his numerous projects. He was a true MacGyver when it came to fixing anything and his attention to specific details never went unnoticed. Despite how busy he was working on his own projects, he was always willing to help someone in need. John was very impactful in supporting the recovery community. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his ability to tell a story and especially for getting the punchline wrong and including the less-than-important details, usually all out of order.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah; brother, Georgie; son-in-law, Paul; sister-in-law, Patsy.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Oncology Department at the QEII Hospital, with a special thank you to Dr. Morzycki, whose care and treatment extended John’s life for several years. The family also wishes to thank the Palliative Care Team at Hants Community Hospital, the VON for their service, and all of John’s friends, neighbors and loved ones, who provided so much care, support and love throughout the years.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, October 20 in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Rob Heffernan officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to Hants Community Hospital, 89 Payzant Dr., Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 or the Chemotherapy Department at Valley Regional Hospital, 150 Exhibition St., Kentville, NS B4N 5E3.
We are so thankful for all the memories we shared together. We only wish you were here to make more. We love you and want you to rest peacefully now after your long and courageous fight.
