- MacQUARRIE, Neil Daniel - 87, Caledonia,
died Friday, July 11, 2003, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Cameron Settlement, Guysborough Co., he was a son of the late Waldo Grant and Catherine Lucy (Cameron) MacQuarrie.
He was a lifelong resident of Caledonia and represented
the 6th generation of MacQuarries, since 1808, to live on the family homestead. He was a noted local merchant and businessman, operating with his brother John as co-owner of the MacQuarrie Bros General Store until 1975.
They also partnered in the operation of MacQuarrie Bros. Saw and Lathe mills for many years. During his long and productive life he was involved in a number of other activities, including the operation of a large herd of beef cattle, maintenance of the family farm, trucking and core sample work for the Hemany Mining Co. and was also well-known for his power saw sales and repair business. Mr. MacQuarrie was an active member of the local community, serving as Commissioner of Oaths since 1942 as well as Postmaster for a time.
He served as Trustee for the Caledonia school and
was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Caledonia.
He was predeceased by infant son, Daniel John; brother, John Alexander. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow, where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Don Shephard officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment of ashes will be in Caledonia Cemetery. to the Canadian Cancer Society or Caledonia Cemetery.
