- WEST, Stephen Franklyn
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Stephen Franklyn West, on November 28, 2021. Stephen was born in Halifax on October 10, 1951, to Gerald and Mildred (Crewe) West. Though the West boys were all born in Halifax, they moved to Lockhartville when they were very young. Stephen loved his family, his friends, music and the sea. His love of music was lifelong, he played various instruments, but his instrument of choice was the clawhammer banjo. He played in many bands and entertained at festivals, pubs and music venues. He had a large family of musical and music loving friends, who will miss him dearly. As much as Stephen loved music, he had an equal love of the sea. Most of the warmer months, you would find Stephen and Joann on their boat, “Trinity”, sailing to islands and locations on the South Shore with friends and family. A day on the ocean with Stephen and Joann was always so much fun. Stephen had a long career in oil exploration, in directional drilling, which took him to many countries all over the world. He always claimed that his favorite country was Vietnam while his least favorite was Angola, where he had to exit quickly amid a military coup and the Ebola virus. His travels and work stories were always wonderful, fun and sometimes terrifying to listen to. Stephen also had a pilot’s license, he and his father shared a love of flying and there were a select few who were actually brave enough to go up with them. If Stephen taught us anything, it is to do what you love, follow your passion, live life to the fullest. He did that every day. Stephen loved his family enormously. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Gerald; and his brother, Michael. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Mahone Islands Conservation Association.
