- WELLWOOD, Arnold A. - Passed away in Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ont., on Thursday, December 7, 2007, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Leila (Parker) Wellwood; brother, Edgar Harris Wellwood, and sister, Dorothy Wellwood. Arnold grew up in Hantsport and graduated from Acadia University (B.Sc., M.Sc.). After marrying Fran in 1942, they moved to Montreal where he taught at McGill University. During the war, his research focused on an alternative plant-based fuel. They later moved to Guelph, Ont., where he taught at Ontario Agricultural College (University of Guelph). In 1956 he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., with a Ph.D. in genetics. From 1958-60, Arnold and his family lived in Nigeria where he developed a high-yielding type of corn. After teaching at the University of Connecticut, he returned to Canada to teach at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. in the Biology Department (1963-80). He and Fran spent their retirement in Kentville. They enjoyed their summers at their cottage in Grand Pré and many winters in Florida, more recently returning to Kitchener to live. Arnold was an avid photographer and enjoyed playing in a musical recorder group, woodworking and participating in the annual bird census. He was a past member of First Baptist Church, Guelph, where he sang in the choir, Highland Baptist Church, Kitchener, and Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot. A memorial service will be held in Winston Park Retirement Home in Kitchener at a later date.
