- Retired Nurse, Joan A Newcomb’s (Miller) love of life didn’t come to an end with her death. She passed away on January 29, 2024, at the age of 94, after ongoing health issues, surrounded by family who will continue to honor her legacy by living lives to the fullest.
Joan completed her RN training at the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1951. A few years later, she met her future husband, Everett Newcomb, when he was a patient. After they wed, they moved to Portland, Maine, in 1959, because of the clean water in the city. In 1961, Joan made the decision to take time away from nursing, to raise their son. After 15 years away from nursing, Joan was determined to pass the Maine State Board to again practice Nursing, where she then took a job at the Barron Center for over 30 years.
Joan enjoyed being around family and friends. She was very involved at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Portland, volunteering her time as a member of the Alter Guild, helping in the kitchen, and much more. She enjoyed sitting at home knitting a new sweater, crocheting a new blanket or sewing up a new dress; she was so talented in many ways.
