    • Based on the entries in the British Canadian “Register General to whom Death is Required by the Act of 1804 to be Reported”, JOHN ALEXANDER TOYE, born 15 April 1846 in Hantsport, died on August 9, 1903, at age 57 at sea on route from NS to San Francisco. The location of his ship, the Allerton, at his time of death is given as 30’ 15” South, 74’ 32” West, which is about 180 miles off the coast of central Chile. He had captained the ship around Cape Horn, which is notorious for gales, high seas, sea ice, and shipwrecks. The cause of JOHN A.T.’s death was listed as locomotor ataxy and gastritis. JOHN A.T.’s wife, JANNET OLIVIA DUNLOP and most of their children were on board the Allerton in 1903 when JOHN A.T. died. JANNET O.D. died 24 years later, on September 30,1927, in Alameda, California, at age 76.
