- BARRETT, Fredrick Grenfell - 98, Cambridge Station, Kings Co., passed away peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, November 25, 2007. Born in Hantsport, April 14, 1909, he was a son of the late Rev. Fred Barrett and Rebecca (Dalrymple).
Fred graduated from Mt. Allison University with a B.Ed. and later received an M.Sc. in Biology from Dalhousie University. For a number of years he taught at the Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro, and at various other locations throughout Nova Scotia. During the Second World War, he served in the RCAF (Flight Lt.) in Bournmouth, England, as a wireless instructor. On his return home he taught briefly at Cornwallis Military Base. He then worked with the Department of Health, Halifax, and as Director of Rehabilitation with the T.B. Association at the Nova Scotia Sanitarium in Kentville. He concluded his career years working in Adult Education in Bridgetown. Fred was an avid ham radio operator (VE1KR) and throughout his long life he was involved in many community organizations. His hobbies and interests are too numerous to mention. To the very end he showed an amazing zest for life and learning. Fred was well-known as "a people person" and a gentleman! Many will remember his strong handshake and kindness.
He was predeceased by brother, Doug; sister, Elizabeth; wife, Eleanore (Lacey) and young son, Ricky. His body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 30, at 5:30 p.m. in Christian Reformed Church, 118 Oakdene Ave., Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian National Institute for the Blind or a charity of choice.
