- Muriel Eleamore Ross of Dartmouth N.S. died peacefully on Friday June 21, 2024. She was 103 years of age. Muriel was originally from Upper Canard, King’s Co. N. S. She was a devoted daughter, loving sister, caring aunt, loyal friend and proud Centenarian. We who believe in the risen Christ, as Muriel did, have the hope of eternal life, of waking from death’s short sleep, to our heavenly home. We are confident that Muriel now sees her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ face to face.
Muriel will be greatly missed. She had a quick wit and loved to laugh. She was caring, kind and charitable, a person who liked a good joke. Our aunt was a giver, she rarely sought things for herself.
Muriel was predeceased by her parents Daniel D. Lewis Ross of East Preston NS and Mary Eliza States-Ross of Mount Denson NS who together set a strong example of how hard work overcomes harsh life circumstances.
Muriel was also predeceased by her brothers, Arthur, Douglas, Albert, Lawrence, Eugene and Norris, as well as her sisters Gertrude Ross-Johnson and Alice Ross-Izzard.
Muriel saw many changes during her 103 years. She was accepting of change and learned to adapt and bend,in the face of life’s challenges. Muriel always worked hard starting at age 12 when she left school to contribute to her family. Muriel first worked as a domestic earning less than a dollar a day. I once asked my aunt if she would like to see a movie that was playing called The Help and she replied “no” firmly because she said, “I was the help!” She worked several years in Ontario, and one of the jobs she enjoyed was sterilizing needles, at a large hospital. Many of her work years were spent as a food services employee at CFB Shearwater. Muriel loved family get-togethers, a game of Scat and Bingo. She chose to remain single; she was strong and independent. She very ably filled the role of aunt and great aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her family Muriel leaves behind a number of very dear friends at Edgemere Manor, Dartmouth, and her close and oldest remaining friend in Mahone Bay.
Since 2020 Murel lived at Parkstone Enhanced Care, where she received compassion, kindness and quality care from the Nursing and other staff of Fleming Way. At 99 years of age, while still able to drive a motorized wheelchair Muriel was required to take an on site driving test. There were questions about her driving abilities with her advanced age. We all marveled at her skill as Muriel successfully maneuvered her motorized chair through the improvised testing track.
Muriel’s Celebration of life ceremony will take place on July 8, 2024 6:00 PM at Dartmouth Funeral Home Ltd. 29 Queen St. Dartmouth, NS
