- Age 92, of Windsor, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 18, 2025 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Wolfville, March 22, 1933, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Mary (Hills) Carey.
Merle attended Wolfville High School and Acadia University. He worked at C.K.F. as office manager and was a partner in a construction business, Wallace and Carey. He later went on to work for Minas Realty and then Brooklyn Insurance Agency, Windsor.
He enjoyed playing baseball for the Hantsport Shamrocks from 1958-61 and was a member of the Maritime Champions in 1961. He also played hockey for the Wolfville Falcons, Digby Ravens and Windsor Maple Leafs, when they were Nova Scotia Champions in the late 50’s. He enjoyed coaching minor hockey in Windsor as well. Merle was a member of the Ken-Wo Golf Club with his wife, Joan and they enjoyed spending time together on the golf course. He also served as president of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre for a few years.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Joan; daughter, Renda VanderToorn and brother, Harry “Donnie” Carey.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, where the family will receive visitors from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, December 2. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 3 in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Jennifer Riley officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. A private interment will be held in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.
