Jacob and another slave, Abram, escaped from Dunkinson during the War of 1812, when the British military set up a blockade on Maryland waterways. 971 Jean B. Hennigar - It is with great sadness and also joy that we announce the passing from this life into the glory of eternal life of Jean Beatrice Hennigar on Tuesday, April 5th, 2016, at home, aged 100. Born February 18th, 1916, at home in Gaspereau, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Lena Isabel Jodrey. At an early age, her family moved to Wolfville, where she attended school. Upon graduation, she went to Mack Business College, learning skills that stayed with her for her entire life, especially the art of shorthand. She worked at Minas Basin Pulp and Power until her marriage to her handsome skating partner, Dean S. Hennigar of Greenwich. After their wedding at her parents’ home in Hantsport, they moved to Brooklyn, Hants Co., then to Somerset, Kings Co. The next move was to South Berwick, where she became a charter member of the South Berwick branch of the Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia. After a summer spent at Turner’s Brook, the family moved finally, in 1953, to Sheffield Mills when they purchased the Harold Chase apple farm. There Mum raised five children, did the books for the farm, and was a director of Minas Basin Pulp and Paper Company for 16 years. She attended First Cornwallis Baptist Church as a faithful and faith-filled member for 62 years, serving as clerk for the Church for 19 years. She was a charter member of the Blanche Gower Auxiliary, and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, played the piano and taught Sunday School. She and Dad also taught Sunday School in the Gibson Woods Baptist Church. They were both members of The Gideons International. She attended PTA meetings for many years, was an Explorer leader, and remained a member of the Sheffield Mills and District W.I. until the time of her passing. Over the years, Mum researched the genealogy of four branches of our family and was a charter member of the Kings Historical Society and one of the early members of the Genealogical Society. Her second hobby from the time she was 13 until recently was scrapbooking. If anyone needed a picture or article from years ago having to do with anything that touched Mum’s life, she most likely had it. She was a terrific reference for family, and also as a member of the Sheffield Mills Community Association. She was part of a W.I. committee that wrote and published the first edition of \"Grist From the Mills\". Mum was an avid reader all her life and passed on her love of books and reading to us all. She enjoyed travelling, but was always glad to come home. She especially enjoyed spending winters on the island of Montserrat at their home there, and summers at the cottage at Lake George. She loved to play games, especially Scrabble, and most card games, teaching us to try to win, but also teaching us how to lose. Her \"sticky buns\" were legend and you never went hungry at her table. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Dean, in 2005, an infant daughter at birth, sister, Florence Bishop and brother, John Jodrey. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 29th, 7-9 p.m., at White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. A celebration of Mum’s life will be held on Saturday, April 30th at 2:00 p.m. at First Cornwallis Baptist Church, 1012 Middle Dyke Road, Upper Canard.  Jodrey, Jean Beatrice (I2426)

Jean loved all sports and when the Jays weren't playing, she was usually watching hockey or curling. Jean was adored by her eight grandchildren. Growing up, a trip to Grammy's meant lots of games, silly stories, fresh vegetables from the garden, and sweet treats and tea biscuits. She was predeceased by her husband, Claude; son, Kevin; and brothers, Donald, Billy, and Sam. Jean has eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, cleaning staff, and support staff on 5 east at Dartmouth General Hospital. Jean's final days were made a little easier because of you. 992 John Llewellyn Tracey

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of a loving husband and father on February 16, 2021 in Victoria, B.C. John was born on May 25, 1936 in Hantsport to Merton and Pauline (Greene). He was also predeceased by his beloved son, Jeffrey; and grandson, Cole. He was an outgoing, friendly and generous man who enjoyed interacting with others and could talk for hours if given the chance. He enjoyed playing hockey and did so until his later years. One of his favourite activities was exploring unfamiliar roads, which on one trip, led us into a seedy part of Boston but, unfazed, found his way out. It was pre-GPS but he had an excellent sense of direction and always seemed to be able navigate unknown territory. John gave a hundred percent to all things of interest to him and was especially proud of the 100 dairy cattle herd he built up. He was an avid reader and problem solver, somehow being able, most of the time, to come up with a solution to difficulties. "Cowboy logic" he'd say. He also spent many years in the construction business, working pipeline in Ontario and later working for the Town of Hantsport and also doing individual projects. John loved getting phone calls from his children of whom he was so proud. Since moving to British Columbia, he kept in touch with family and friends in Nova Scotia, and he and his cousin, Albert, were on the phone many times as they had established a close bond in childhood. Many thanks to all those at Royal Jubilee Hospital who had some part in taking such good care of John. You were so kind and helpful and it was very much appreciated.

993 John Whitfield Garland, age 72, of Windsor, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at home, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Baddeck to the late Whitfield and Janice (Arenburg) Garland on October 29, 1952.

John married his high-school sweetheart, Rae (Gibson) and enjoyed 52 years of marriage. His happiest time was the time he spent with his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather, to human and fur family alike.

His professional highlights include architectural drafting on several major builds in Calgary and Nova Scotia with a few different firms, carpentry work and project management work on the St. David’s Church for the last decade of his career. Even in retirement, John always kept busy with his numerous projects. He was a true MacGyver when it came to fixing anything and his attention to specific details never went unnoticed. Despite how busy he was working on his own projects, he was always willing to help someone in need. John was very impactful in supporting the recovery community. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his ability to tell a story and especially for getting the punchline wrong and including the less-than-important details, usually all out of order.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah; brother, Georgie; son-in-law, Paul; sister-in-law, Patsy.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Oncology Department at the QEII Hospital, with a special thank you to Dr. Morzycki, whose care and treatment extended John’s life for several years. The family also wishes to thank the Palliative Care Team at Hants Community Hospital, the VON for their service, and all of John’s friends, neighbors and loved ones, who provided so much care, support and love throughout the years.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, October 20 in the funeral home chapel, Rev. 999 JONES, Joan Mary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Joan Mary Jones, age 92, on October 16, 2017 in Haliburton Place, Windsor. Joan was born February 21, 1925 in Manchester, England, the oldest daughter of Alfred and May (Bevan) Sigsworth.

Joan grew up in the city of Leeds and at the age of 17 joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in Sopley in south of England manning radar stations to detect German warplanes. On their downtime, the women would travel to nearby Bournemouth to a dance hall called the Pavilion. Tom and Joan were married on May 24, 1945 and, following Tom's return to Canada, Joan boarded the S. S. Stavangafjord bound for Canada in January 1946. Joan arrived as a war bride at Pier 21 in Halifax on January 14, 1946 to start a new life. Joan quickly adapted from city girl to living on a farm with Tom and started raising a family. Tom's career path took Joan and the family from that farm to Quebec to Barrie, Ontario and back to Nova Scotia over the course of a few decades.

She loved to travel, taking the family on many memorable family vacations as well as trips with just Tom to Europe, the US and the Caribbean. She was also an avid reader and crossword solver.
