927 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Zelda Louise (Starratt) McLellan, from Hantsport, on July 27, 2020, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, with loved ones by her side. Born in Hantsport, on April 26, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt and wife of the late Ivan (Whitey) McLellan.

Zelda was a very energetic lady who loved family, animals, music, people, and baseball. Zelda and Whitey were inseparable baseball icons who could be seen at ballparks anywhere in the Maritimes all the way to St. Petersburg, Florida! There are many stories told of more than one umpire, from Hantsport Shamrocks to Kentville Wildcat games, who would yell from behind home plate, “OK, Whitey and Zelda are here, let’s play ball!”

Her energies took her and the family twice to live in the States; Worcester, Mass. and St. Petersburg, Florida. Zelda spent most of her life in her beloved Hantsport as a homemaker and instilled a sense of love and pride in her children and expected nothing but best efforts from them. Her determination was evident when she went to work at the Drug Store in Hantsport long enough to make the money required to have a swimming pool installed in her backyard on William Street! Whitey, who couldn’t swim a stroke, would walk home from his FINA station on Main Street and have a dip before enjoying the lunch she always had ready.

Zelda loved music and especially enjoyed family/friend sing songs whether it was at home, the church, or at the camp in Bishopville! Her eyes would light up at the sight of any dog or cat and she had multiple combinations of both during her life. In later years she absolutely adored her little Shih Tzu, Rascal, and could be seen walking him through the streets of Hantsport.

Zelda was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt; husband, Ivan (Whitey) McLellan and brother, Wilbur Starratt and granddaughter, Keri Price.

There will be no public service or visitation upon Zelda’s request. A private graveside ceremony will take place at the Riverbank Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Zelda may be made to Dykeland Lodge, Hantsport Baptist Church Building Fund, or charity of choice.

931 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of this wonderful man; a beloved husband, a devoted father, and an incredible grandfather and great-grandfather. Following a short period of illness, Wayne passed away peacefully at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor NS on May 7th, 2022, surrounded by his wife and children’s love and support until his final breath. Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia on July 28th, 1940, he was the son of the late Bret and Flossie (nee Swinamer) Lunn of Upper Burlington, NS. He was the 9th of 11 children and he grew up amidst a family of jokesters. Rural living made for strong family roots, a simple lifestyle and easy-going disposition.

Besides his parents, Wayne is predeceased by siblings: Ron, Helen Fougere, Fred, Merrill, Malcolm, Joan Starratt, June Purvis, Graham and Gary.

At age 19 Wayne married the love of his life, and together they had 5 children. They settled a short distance from his childhood homestead which then became his own family’s little piece of heaven in Upper Burlington.

Early in married life Wayne took various jobs in construction where he quickly learned the skills of various trades. Wayne worked at many job sites in Halifax as well as a short stint in Sackville, New Brunswick. He was able to put his hand to most anything and stayed busy earning a living to provide for his young wife and kids.

Wayne found his dream career in 1983 as Manager of the Newport “Brooklyn” Rink; a career that spanned 29 years. In that time, you could say that Wayne built his career. He was an original founding member; spending countless hours canvassing for funds needed to construct the original Newport Rink. He went on to Chair the Newport Rink Commission until such time that he stepped away from the board in order to accept employment there.

Wayne lived at the rink. In the summers he was not only a building caretaker but also was known to call bingo there to raise funds. In the winters he was happy to work long shifts as he enjoyed all the chats with players and spectators, watching all of the players (young and old) and feeding his passion for hockey. This was all in addition to coaching women’s broomball, the Hants Brunettes, coaching Newport Minor Hockey and, of course, spectating his own children and then his grandchildren.

After his wonderful 29-year career as Manager, he crossed the hallway to join his wife in the rink canteen where they continued there until the rink roof collapsed. However, that was not the end; Wayne continued his involvement with the rink commission and was determined to support the rebuild of what is now known as the GFL Newport Rink. He was of strong opinion that the facility was to remain there to support the Village of Brooklyn and the surrounding communities. He worked alongside many other dedicated volunteers to ensure a new rink was built. He was proud of those efforts and remained an active member on the commission until he passed.

Wayne’s volunteer spirit and passion for athletics was not only seen at the rink. Wayne spent time as the President of the Newport Minor Fastball Association out of St. Croix. He managed many Senior Men’s Fastball teams that won several titles. He also coached women’s ball and was forever proud of all the development that occurred at the St. Croix Recreation site.

In his later years Wayne’s interests lead him to the bowling alley where he was an active bowler until just a couple weeks ago. In addition, Wayne was a lucky, though competitive, card player. Serious about winning, Wayne enjoyed many games of 45s and crib with his wife and their dear friends.

In warmer months, Wayne could be most often found in his greenhouse or gardens. He had a green thumb and a love of growing and tending his own vegetables. He was proud of his “estate” and took much enjoyment in sharing the fruits of his labour and his passion for gardening.

932 It is with great sorrow, we, the family of Judith Ann Sanford, age 79, of Berwick, announce her passing on November 11, 2020 at the Valley Hospice in Kentville. Born in Wolfville on March 17, 1941, Judith “Judy” was the daughter of the late Victor and Jennie Forsythe (nee Lockhart).

She spent many of her growing up years in Wolfville and in Berwick, before moving to Hantsport as a teenager. It would be in Hantsport that she married, raised her family, and made many close and lasting friendships over the next 50 years.

In her later years, Judy moved to Berwick to be closer to her grandchildren, who were so very special to her. In her working years, Judy was employed for several years at CKF and then at the NSLC store in Hantsport. Wherever she went, she was known for her warm personality, her wit, and her love of a good laugh. She kept her sense of humour right to the end, despite the suffering she endured from her illnesses. She didn’t care about pretenses, worldly things, or the entrapments of life - but always welcomed company and a chat and the banter that would most certainly ensue.

Back in the day, she was known for her homemade bread, rolls, and tea biscuits. Before her illnesses, she could most often be found doing jigsaw puzzles, playing her keyboard, or riding shotgun, being chauffeured all over the place by her ‘partner in crime’, Doug.

Visits from family, friends, and neighbours were what she lived for.

Besides her parents, Judy was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon Sanford; and brothers Cameron and Carl Forsythe.

Doug, Crystal, and Carol would like to express a deep gratitude to all those who helped us during mom’s illness. Very special thanks to the valley Palliative Care team, VON, Staff on Medical B at VRH, and to the Valley Hospice staff for their unwavering quest to ensure mom’s comfort in her final phase of life. Your kindness and empathy will not be forgotten.

In keeping with Judy’s wishes, cremation will take place. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 20, 2020 at 1:00 pm in the Riverbank Cemetery in Hantsport. In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to the Valley Hospice Foundation or a charity of choice.

933 It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness, that we announce the sudden passing of our vibrant and loving wife and mother, Elizabeth “Ann” Burden of Hantsport, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 73. She was the daughter of the late George and Alice (Smith) MacBurnie.

Ann shared 53 wonderful years with her devoted husband and soulmate, Robert. The love they shared throughout those years was one of the greatest - a true love story that will never end. She was a proud and loving mother to Amanda and Jennifer, always offering support, encouragement and unconditional love, she was their biggest cheerleader. Her family was her greatest joy and her warmth, laughter and kindness filled every home and heart she touched.

Her favorite times were family times. Ann loved family gatherings, especially Christmas and birthdays. She enjoyed music, gardening, feeding the birds and watching the deer and cardinals that brightened her yard. Her loyal dog, Maggie, was a constant companion.

Throughout her career, Ann worked at Avon Foods, M & K Mini Mart, Foodland and Valley Credit Union, where she spent most of her professional life before retiring. Later, she enjoyed part-time work at Avon Valley Variety, where her friendly smile and caring spirit made her many friends. Above all, her proudest role was being a mom.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Barbara “Barb” Logan; brother, David MacBurnie; son-in-law, Christopher Dillman.

There are no words to express how grateful we are for the love and support shown by our community of Hantsport, our family and friends since Ann’s passing. A heartfelt thank you to the first responders, Windsor Fire Department, EMT’s and Hants Community Hospital for their care, dignity and compassion as we faced the unbearable news and said our last goodbyes.

Our world will never be the same without her love and presence but we know that she would want us to carry on, to share her kindness and love and to hold our memories of her close to our hearts. We will love you forever, sweet Ann, beloved wife, mother and friend.

A Celebration of Life Open-House will be held at the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre (Churchill House), 6 Main St., Hantsport on Sunday, November 9, from 2–4 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. 934 It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce Greg’s passing after a courageous battle with cancer. Wallace Gregory “Greg” Maguire, age 76, of Bishopville, passed away on November 17, 2023, in Valley Hospice in Kentville, with his wife, Della at his side. Better known as Greg, he was born in the Truro hospital on June 23, 1947. He was the oldest of three children born to Nellie Laura Watson and Clarence “Mick” Maguire.

Greg attended school in Grand Pre, Newport Station and Hantsport and sea cadets in the red barn at the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. He was in his teens when he met Della, the love of his life, on their 18th birthday. Greg didn’t believe Della when she told him it was also her birthday, but in later years Greg loved telling people that Della was older… by 12 hours, although he would often leave that last part out! They were married on March 17, 1967, in Hantsport at the Anglican Church.

Sports were a constant in Greg’s life. He started out playing baseball in the 70’s for teams such as the Tides and the Mariners. He played broomball in Brooklyn as well as playing and coaching fastball in Avonport. He spent some time in the bowling alley, mixed league on Wednesday nights and a competitive men’s league on Thursday nights. He wore each uniform proudly. He was also an avid watcher of all sports on TV, such as hockey, baseball, darts, and bowling. Another favorite past time for Greg was fishing, whether it was for brook trout, shad on the Annapolis River, or fly in fishing in Northern Alberta to hook a monster rainbow trout.

Greg’s first job after getting married was on the gypsum boat out of Hantsport which travelled down the eastern seaboard to Florida. He then attended Kings Vocational School to become an electrician. Greg established a business called W.G. Maguire Electrical Ltd which was well known throughout Nova Scotia. During the late 70’s, Greg and Della opened a store front of the same name, where they sold appliances and lighting fixtures. In the early 80’s, the store moved to William Street across from the Hantsport post office. Later in life he became a red seal electrician which allowed him to work across Canada for himself as well as contract bidding for electrical companies.

Never taking the time to rest, Greg and Della built their three homes over the course of 20 years, starting in Hantsport in 1974 and then moving to Lockhartville. The last house, built on Ben Jackson Road, is now the office of Glooscap Ventures. The purchase of the house and surrounding land by Glooscap First Nation, was an integral part of establishing what is now Glooscap Landing. Greg has had a long involvement with Glooscap First Nation, as he was awarded the tender for building the first 2 homes on Smith Road in the late 80’s, which in turn opened the community for expansion.

In 2015, Greg was a double lung transplant recipient at the University of Alberta (U of A) Hospital in Edmonton. After Greg’s recovery, they returned to Nova Scotia in 2016, settling in Bishopville. Over the past 4 years, Greg had developed an aggressive form of skin cancer that required several surgeries and radiation treatments. Unfortunately, this cancer was caused by one of his anti-rejection drugs that was required after the lung transplant. Greg was very thankful for the opportunity to receive the transplant, which added years onto his life. He was able to enjoy his hobbies such fishing and tinkering in the garage. His greatest pleasure was having the chance to spend time with his family. Knowing that his children and grandchildren were “doing good” in their lives, gave him peace and contentment.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many health professionals on his care team at the U of A Hospital in Edmonton, specialists in Halifax, his Nurse Practitioner in Hantsport, the Palliative Care team, and those at the Valley Hospice in Kentville for their care and kindness.

In addition to his parents, Greg was predeceased by his sister, Debbie Maguire of Greenwood.

For those of you who knew Greg, you knew he was a very private man. Cremation has taken place and following his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greg’s name may be made to Valley Hospice in Kentville or a charity of your choice.

935 It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Emma Lily Horne, who peacefully departed this world on February 13, 2024, at the age of 81. Emma was surrounded by her loving family at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, NS, as she embarked on her final journey. Born in Bishops Falls, NL, NF, on October 16, 1942, Emma was the cherished daughter of Walter and Melitta Benson. She was the devoted wife of the late Fred Horne.

In 1979, our family faced a significant change as we moved from NF to NS, expanding from a family of four to a family of eleven overnight. This transition presented a significant challenge for any mother, but Emma faced it head-on without hesitation, demonstrating unwavering strength and resilience. The "Arnold Family" became our new family, and the bond formed during that time remains strong to this day.

Emma retired early from the business world and dedicated her time to volunteering for numerous organizations. Her tireless efforts were recognized when she was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award. She devoted 37 years to West Hants Ground Search and Rescue, and her selfless spirit extended to her involvement with St. Andrews Anglican Church, the Canadian Red Cross, and several other groups. Emma was always willing to lend a hand and embark on new adventures, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched.

She was predeceased by her brother Lester at birth, and her sisters Rhoda Sutton, Marion Elson, and Nancy Preston. Emma will also be dearly missed by her three four-legged fur babies, Sassyfrass, Gus, and Ozzy.

In accordance with Emma's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no funeral service. Instead, a celebration of Emma's life will be arranged and announced in the near future, most likely in mid to late spring. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity or group of one's choice. In the spirit of our dearly departed mother, we ask you to please be kind to one another and to treat others with compassion.

Emma Lilly Horne will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will continue to inspire and guide us as we navigate life without her physical presence. May her spirit live on in the hearts of those she touched, and may her memory be a blessing to us all. Rest in peace, dear Emma.
Benson, Emma Lily (I17817)

940 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Myrna Idella Campbell in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, on January 23, 2023. Born on October 14, 1935 in Middleton, to the late Thelma and Arthur Banks, she was the eldest of seven children. Myrna spent her first years in Inglisville before moving to Hantsport at the age of eight. She graduated from Hantsport High School and then finished Grade 12 at the old Windsor Academy, hitchhiking from Hantsport to Windsor every day with her good friend Sally. After Grade 12 Myrna ventured to Halifax for a career in nursing and graduated from the Victoria General Hospital, a proud graduate of the class of ‘57B. Myrna lived in “the alley” in the VG residence making lifelong friendships while there and she told the best stories about being a nursing student. Myrna worked at the Victoria General and reached the position of Head Nurse after working a year in Calgary. It was when she returned to Halifax, in 1960, that she met a handsome young engineer on a blind date. As they liked to reminisce, Mom wore a yellow dress and Dad wore a pinstriped suit on that date. After marrying in 1963 Frank’s career took them to Moncton, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg before retiring to Wolfville. Myrna loved her trips to Florida with Frank and combing the beach of Marco Island for shells. She loved to cook, bake and tend her vegetable garden. But most of all, she loved her family unconditionally. Myrna was an avid CBC listener during the Peter Gzowski, Stuart McLean and Anna Maria Tremonti years. In her 50’s, while living in Winnipeg, she took up cross country skiing and returned to work in the shoe department at Sears in Polo Park. As she tells it, this was the best job ever. She was predeceased by brother, Ronald; and sisters, Maxine and Doreen. Banks, Myrna Idella (I2618)

942 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, at the age of 79, of Windsor, on Monday September 2, 2024 in Hants Community Hospital. Born November 25, 1944, in Wolfville to the late Ronald and Greta (Smith) Walsh.

After high school she took her business course at Kay Anslow School of Business and began working at the Department of Lands and Forest until she started her family. Sylvia was a stay at home mom and was very busy raising three boys. Sylvia’s caring and compassionate nature led her to take a CAA course at the age of 53, she graduated with a 90% average. Her goal in life was to help the less fortunate. She would bake for community fund raising events, help friends and family that were in the hospital with their personal care.

Sylvia was known for her love of adventure. She and Bill drove across Canada and back. She travelled to Florida a few times to visit with her friends. She enjoyed camping, dancing, going to community jams. During the spring and summer time you would find her attending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was an amazing baker, and her famous banana cake was the grandchildren’s favorite.

Sylvia was predeceased by her parents Ron and Greta; her former husband James Smith, and partner William Gamble and her son Andrew (Marlene).

We would like to give a special thank you to the staff at the Hants Community Hospital in the Emerge and Palliative Care Unit for their excellent care.

He always wanted to move back to the valley where he was the happiest. He enjoyed fishing, even though he wasn’t able to go in recent years. His family, especially his boys, were the world to him.

Ron worked for many years cooking before moving into floor care. He took great pride in his work and was a bit of a perfectionist. He never left a floor until it was perfectly waxed and shining. In his down time and when he wasn’t fishing, he enjoyed music and movies. He loved his 80’s music and movies, with his favourite movie being “The Goonies”. He never tired of watching that or the Trailer Park Boys. He also loved space and watching the stars.

944 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Russell F. West on March 7, 2022, at his home in Lockhartville.

Russell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be fondly missed. A friend to many, he was a quiet man with the spirit of a warrior. He taught his children to love nature and history, to stand tall, never back down and to work hard.

He loved nature and all wild things. Russell was at peace in the woods, usually seen wearing a tattered orange jacket or a plaid shirt, surrounded by nature's creatures. He was a woodsman well into his late eighties. Although strong, he had a soft side for his grandchildren, his yellow dog, Sassy, and for fox pups playing in his field. Many times, he gently cradled a lost or injured bird in his hands and returned it to safety. He carried a sickly old cat to its bed for many years.

Russell loved to tell stories of days gone by, and could tell hunting stories for hours while fixing guns, chainsaws, or anything that moved. He was an avid hunter and liked to use his antique musket to supply a rabbit to complement the turkey dinner at Christmas. One memorable year, the rabbit was seasoned with turnip seed that had been accidentally mixed with the shot. The wadding from the old gun also caught the surrounding bushes on fire, so the rabbit was somewhat pre-cooked before he brought it home! He was pleased to have a granddaughter challenge him to a shooting match at the firing range.

The sound of a chainsaw, the smell of sawdust or freshly mowed hay, the sight of a tractor or a woodpile bring thoughts of Russell to mind. We remember a "good" Christmas tree he once brought home (he had previously run over with his tractor!)

Russell loved telling his grandchildren stories or taking them for a ride on his tractor. He had great time roasting marshmallows at the beach while listening to his granddaughters sing. Playing with his young grandsons, whether running a foot race or hunting imaginary bears with a stick "gun" he provided, was a great source of joy to them both!

In his younger years, Russell had a Studebaker car and enjoyed drag racing with his friends, once landing the car in a well. He pulled tug-of-war on many teams for many years, until he was in his forties. Russell's first steady job was at Maritime Life Assurance Co. in Halifax, where he worked as an accountant. While living in Halifax, he joined the reserves and was on the boxing team of the Princess Louise Fusiliers. Later he moved to Winnipeg to work for Osler, Hammond & Nanton Insurance Company as an accountant. He was also a member of a boxing team in there, winning the 1957 Manitoba Amateur Boxing Association middle weight title.

Russell eventually returned to Nova Scotia and was employed at Minas Basin Pulp & Power Company for 34 years as a paper quality inspector. He led a busy life and was well loved and respected. He will be missed greatly!

He was predeceased by his parents, Asahel and Marjorie (Hutchinson) West, and a brother in infancy.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at 2 pm in Lindsay's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Debra Mosher officiating.

Interment to follow at Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, N.S.
West, Russell Frederick (I6685)

945 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Mark Porter Dodge, age 64. Mark passed away on June 13th, 2024, peacefully at home in his sleep, succumbing to heart failure. Mark was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family, the ones he loved most.

Mark was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the late Olive Marie (Porter) Dodge and Charles Lloyd "Bud" Dodge.

Mark grew up in Fall River, residing on Lake Thomas. He graduated from Sackville High School in 1978, Saint Mary's University (Bachelor of Commerce) in 1982, and Mount Saint Vincent University (Bachelor of Public Relations) in 1984. While attending the Mount, a long-time friend, Brian, introduced Mark to Susan while they were working for Campus Police together. It was love at first sight; soon after they began dating and their story began. Three years later, Mark and Susan married, built a home in Fall River and started their family.

Mark's illustrious career in the Oil Industry began in 1985. He joined Texaco, and his exceptional performance led him to a new opportunity with Ultramar (now Valero Energy). As an Account Manager (Wholesale & Commercial for the Atlantic Region), Mark's dedication and passion for Valero were unwavering. His meticulous attention to detail and deep sense of responsibility were his trademarks. Mark was not just a colleague but also a mentor, generously sharing his expertise and a leader who inspired others with his integrity and work ethic. His commitment to excellence was evident throughout his 38-year tenure, leaving a lasting impact on each company he served and earning the respect and admiration of all who had the pleasure of working with him. Mark retired on September 1st, 2023, from Valero Energy.

Mark was a sports enthusiast from a young age. His passion for athletics began playing hockey as a child for the Riverlake Hockey Club and continued his love for the game well into high school. Naturally, Mark followed in his dad’s footsteps as a die-hard Detroit Red Wings hockey fan- like father, like son. He played Lacrosse for the Sackville Lakers Lacrosse team during high school and university. Mark played ball hockey for the Titans Ball Hockey team throughout university, winning a championship title. Mark was also an avid skier, taking part in organizing two ski trips to Mont-Sainte-Anne during University. His true passion was playing the game of golf for over 30 years. Throughout these years, Mark served two years on the executive committee at Oakfield Golf & Country Club, where he was an active member.

Mark was deeply committed to volunteer work. He dedicated his time to coaching each of his four children's sports teams for many years and held various administrative positions in these sports (Bedford Blues Hockey, Scotia & Suburban Soccer, Nova Central Ringette, Lockview High School Football). He also participated in the "Head For The Hills" Ski Challenge, where he and his Ultramar co-workers raised over $247,000 for the QEII Foundation over eleven years. Mark's volunteer service extended to major sporting events like the 1995 Labatt Brier, 2003 Nokia Brier, 1998 Memorial Cup, 2000 Memorial Cup, and 2005 The Roar of the Rings Olympic Trials and 2019 Memorial Cup. However, his most memorable volunteer experience and claim to fame was with the Lockview High School - Prom Committee for his youngest daughter's Grade 12 Prom.

The family gatherings for holidays and birthdays, vacations, taking his “perfect” (Mark’s words) dog Marley for walks, hot summer days swimming in the pool, bonfires in the backyard with a nice glass of wine, taking the grandkids on the John Deere lawn tractor, and of course, making his world-famous seafood chowder at Christmas time were some of his happiest moments. Mark’s pride in his children and grandchildren was immeasurable. He was his children's and grandchildren's biggest supporter. Mark never missed an opportunity to attend their sports, activities and events. His loud presence on the sidelines, clapping, cheering, and encouraging, was a familiar sight.

Always supportive and willing to lend a hand. Strong-willed and stood by his opinions. He got it done, and we loved him for it! Mark will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His zest for life, quick wit, and irrepressible spirit made every moment spent with Mark memorable and cherished. He always seemed invincible, a force to be reckoned with. He will forever be etched in a million moments in many lives.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation

947 It is with heavy hearts the family announces the peaceful passing of Goldie Kay (Lockhart) McDow of Mount Denson, at the age of 80, at her son’s home with family, on Friday, May 31, 2024, after a brief journey with cancer. Born in Kentville on July 20, 1943, she was the youngest daughter of the late Grant and Margaret (Schofield) Lockhart.

She was predeceased by her parents and loving husband of nearly 62 years, Darrell “Ducky” McDow. Goldie was the last surviving member of her immediate family which included sisters, Alma Russell and Ella Bezanson; brothers, Chesley, Sherman, Harley and Charles (at birth) Lockhart.

Goldie received her Cosmetology diploma and worked as a hairdresser until she became a full-time mother to her four children while working alongside Darrell on their hobby farm. When her children were older, she then took on jobs such as delivering the Chronicle Herald and working part-time in the Acadia University Biology Department.

She lived a full life and was known for being caring, talented, outgoing and always lending a helping hand wherever she could to everyone around her. She was a steadfast pillar of her community of Mount Denson where she was actively involved in canvassing for Heart and Stroke, Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation and being a proud volunteer with the Mount Denson Community Hall. One of her proudest achievements was running and organizing the card games at the Mount Denson Community Hall where she made and auctioned off her famous apple pies, which raised over $7000.00 and paid for many improvements to the Hall which will continue to enrich the lives of those in the community.

One of Goldie’s lifelong passions was 4-H. She started out as a project leader at the Dyke 4-H Club and from there moved to the Border Riders 4-H Club. In this club she served for over 50 years in many capacities from project leader for sewing and handicrafts all the way to General Leader. From this position she was able to mentor youth in areas such as public speaking, achievement days, exhibitions and provincial shows. Goldie also served as president of the Hants County 4-H Council as well as a director to the Nova Scotia Provincial Council. 4-H enabled Goldie to travel to many areas of Canada, including a provincial exchange to Leoville Saskatchewan and Toronto Ontario, where she was selected as a Nova Scotia leader to attend the prestigious National 4-H Leaders Conference. In 2023, Goldie also won the Friends of Nova Scotia 4-H Award. She gave her time effortlessly to those around her and was a true leader to anyone who needed help.

For many years, Goldie devoted her time to growing along side of her family and volunteering in the many organizations they were involved in such as CGIT, Brownies, Windsor School hot lunch program and Windsor Regional High School Band. She and Darrell could always be found at school concerts, school sporting events and any 4-H event, ox pull, or exhibition around NS. They always ensured to make time to enjoy the monthly Winsport Dance Club, water colour painting, gardening and learning to play guitar. She also took a keen interest in the Royal Family and particularly Princess Diana.

With Christmas being Goldies favorite holiday, it gave her the opportunity to again contribute to the Border Riders 4-H Club by organizing a Christmas wreath fundraiser. She coordinated the selling, picking up, decorating with her hand made bows and delivering them, all with Darrell’s help. Over her lifetime the number of bows she made for the wreathes numbered in the many thousands. Goldie extended her generous support to numerous organizations and immersed herself in the member and President roles in the Mount Denson Garden Club, Mount Denson Baptist Church Loyal Workers, Mount Denson Community Hall, Minas Waves Seniors Club, Windsor Forks and Port Williams Women's Institute, Bishopville Card Party, Lockhartville Hall and Card Party, and the Blue Mountain Cemetery Association. She was also president of the district for Martock Windsor Forks–South Rawdon-Three Corners Women’s Institute.

When not lending her time to others, you could find Goldie using her hands to bring her ideas to life through sewing, quilting, ceramics, painting and any other crafting activity you could think of. She shared these many passions with her family having helped with many of their creations and own projects. You could also always count on Goldie to be there and usually not empty handed. Having become known for always having a sweet treat ranging from lemon loaf to her famous pies. Those around her were blessed to have shared many meals and conversations over her baked beans, hodge podge, rolls and many other recipes.

During the summer months, many meals, sweet treats and laughter were shared at Goldie and Darrell’s cottage on Murphy Lake. Known to be a place of relaxation and good conversation, the cottage was their happy place, having spent summers there for over 50 years. In their younger years, the cottage was home to many parties, block games, card games, campfires (with pie irons of course!), water skiing, sing songs and midnight boat outings. As the years went on her focus switched to entertaining old friends, family and grandchildren but the constant was always love and laughter and creating memories that will last a lifetime for those involved.

Goldie loved to be there for those around her and was known for doing anything she put her mind to. All the while she was volunteering and spending time with family, she created a life filled with memories of love, friendship and created a legacy that will continue for all those who loved her and will miss her dearly.

948 It is with heavy hearts the family of Darrell Gordon "Ducky" McDow, 87 of Mount Denson, Hants County announces his sudden passing on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at the QEII, Halifax, due to a stroke, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born on November 30, 1935 in Blue Mountain, Kings County, he was a son of the late Gordon and Hattie (Russell) McDow. He grew up on the family farm and gained a firm foundation in a love of animals, the lake, a solid work ethic and strong family values.

After leaving home he worked in Halifax for Roy Judge and then started his life and forever home with his one true love, Goldie in Mount Denson in 1961. They had a hobby farm with various animals, but oxen always pulled strongly at his heart strings. He loved to garden throughout his years. He was known for his famous refrigerator cucumber pickles and his newsworthy front-page potato.

During his career of 36 years as a Millwright at CKF Inc. in Hantsport, he was well known for his amazing ability to figure out any problem and fix it. Perhaps no greater demonstration of this was shown than when he built his cottage on Murphy Lake from the ground up - spending every summer and some winters there for over 50 years. He took great pleasure in their cottage, sharing it with family and friends, making memories for everyone around the campfire, on the lake or simply just enjoying the view. Anyone who knew Darrell would experience his friendly, loyal, honest, hardworking, get it done manner, and being seen in his spiffy hats and bolo ties.

Darrell and Goldie shared many adventures, laughs, life learning experiences while raising their four children and had 61-and 1/2-years wonderful married years together. He loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy.

Over the years he had many hobbies and interests from going to the dances at the Winsport Dance Club or local dances, snowmobiling, bowling, motorcycling, curling, swimming, water skiing, hunting, fishing, card parties, playing block and crib, pulling oxen, 4-H Oxen and Beef Leader, senior games, gardening and mowing lawns. In his later years he learned to play the guitar and try his hand at painting and took many road trips. He volunteered at the Mount Denson Community Hall, Blue Mountain Cemetery Association, The Border Riders 4-H Club and Murphy Lake and Lane Road Association. He was a member of two Senior clubs, Minas Waves and Jolly Seniors and Heart/Stroke Windsor Chapter. Plus, whatever projects and jobs Goldie volunteered him for.

He was an avid fisherman, and he especially loved the annual May fishing trip with a core group of family and friends. He was a well-known oxen teamster travelling to compete at many fairs and exhibitions with his prize-winning team.

He had an amazing mind and there was nothing that he could not fix or invent to fix the problem. He enjoyed refurbishing anything that did not work from tinkering, building to painting. He was a great mentor to his grandchildren especially 4-H projects. He loved to go and watch his grandchildren participate in school, 4-H or sports events and loved spending time with his family.

Burial will be at a later date in the Blue Mountain Cemetery.

949 It is with heavy hearts we announce that Edith Rosemary Buxton of Divide, NB, loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Saturday, February 20th, at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, NB. She was 80 years old.

She always had a cup of coffee in her hand or nearby and loved to share her delicious baking with others. Mom was a wonderful seamstress and sewed for many people. She could mend, fix or design clothing with ease, and many knew her as “Pins & Needles.” She also loved to knit, cross stitch, and quilt, and always had a project on the go. When she needed a “break from the sewing room” you could usually find her with a book, as she was an avid reader, or in her beautiful flower beds, because much like her mother, she loved to garden. Through their years together, Mom and Dee, socialized with many friends, snowmobiling, four wheeling, canoeing and fishing, motorbiking and dancing.

When Mom moved from Riverbank to “the camp” in Divide, in the 1980’s, she became actively involved in the local church, a Friendship Club, and sold Avon in the area. Mom was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mom was a wonderful woman, and she will be missed by all who knew her, and especially those who loved her.

951 It is with immense sadness that the family of Donna Darlene Thomas, age 63, of Wallbrook, announce her peaceful passing on Sunday, November 13, 2022 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Donna spent her early years growing up in Waverly, just outside of Dartmouth, NS. She was a daughter of the late Donald and Carlene (Miller) Spears.

In her teens Donna’s family moved back to Pictou County, where she met her best friend and devoted husband Robert "Bob" in high school, which began 47 years of a loving relationship between two soul mates.

After graduating from West Pictou High School, Donna attended the NS College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax, University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton, and finished her formal studies with a double degree in Sociology and Education from Dalhousie University, all the while working 2 and 3 part-time jobs as a young wife. Anyone who met Donna quickly learned that she did nothing "half measure". Her drive, creativity and devotion to family were the hallmarks of a long and fruitful life.

After 4 years living and working in Halifax/Dartmouth, life took them to Hantsport where her love for the Annapolis Valley was cultivated and this became her second home. As a teacher Donna taught at the Hantsport School which she loved, but with limited teaching positions her entrepreneurial spirit was re-kindled and she and a good friend opened the Crimson & Clover Gift Shop and Tea Room. Here two of her favourite hobbies came together, cooking and crafts/giftware.

As a business owner she became active in local economic development and renewal which eventually led her to tourism where she served as Executive Director for the Evangeline Tourism Association. In this position she loved to travel and promote the Valley to many places up and down the US Eastern Seaboard as well as Upper Canada. Donna loved adventure.

Then, when you thought it couldn’t be busier, her life took a turn for something even better as she became a mom for the first time after 15 years of marriage. This was her true calling, and she was fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom to 4 beautiful children that quickly became the most challenging, loving and fulfilling role of her life – a dream come true!

Through all those busy years as "CEO of the house" Donna still found time to teach Sunday School at St. John’s Anglican Church in Wolfville, contribute to many bake sales, make costumes for her children and others, home renovations and gardening. She loved to garden and you would often find her tending to plants, either inside or outside of the house. On top of all that Donna was a valued advisor and Manager of Special Projects for Bob’s software business, a position she constantly hoped to be fired from.

Sadly, Donna’s life changed drastically after her car accident in 2010, leaving her physically disabled. Did she let that stop her? No. After a long recovery her drive and passion was renewed as she wasn’t long taking a full credit course in landscape design from Ryerson in Toronto.

However, family continued to be her primary focus and she and Bob returned "back home" to Pictou County as often as possible to visit with her Mom, sister and brother as well as Bob’s dad.

In recent years Donna continued her creative interests and turned her hand to several new crafting hobbies including repurposing old jewelry pieces to make necklaces and bracelets, a newfound passion, making old things sparkle like new. When Donna did rest, you could find her basking in the sun with her kitty companion Winnie, or cuddling with her dog, who she loved dearly, Bella.

Although Covid slowed her down a bit and she couldn’t go out often, the many phone calls, texts and Facetimes with family and friends kept her sane. She especially loved Facetiming with her great nieces and nephews who brought much joy and love into her life. More recently, she rekindled relationships with many childhood friends through social media and drew on this energy to help her through the more challenging days.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Sandra Spears.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2022 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 21 in St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville, with The Reverend Nicole Uzans officiating.

952 It is with immense sadness the family of Robert Quenton "Bob" Starratt, age 75, of New Minas, announces his sudden passing at home on Friday, November 18, 2022. Born in Windsor, he was the son of the late Roy and Isabelle (Pearson) Starratt.

Prior to retirement, Bob worked as a plater on submarines at the HMC Dockyard for 30 years. 953 It is with love and gratitude that we share the passing of Louise Marie McNeil, age 92, on Thursday, October 23, 2025, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Melanson on July 15, 1933, Louise was the youngest daughter of William and Blanche (Benjamin) Allen.

After graduating from Mack Business College, she worked at Minas Basin Pulp and Paper in Hantsport, where her husband of 63 years first spotted the new lady. Together they raised five children in Hantsport.

Louise was a devoted wife and mother whose cooking, baking and knitting were legendary. She would drive and cheer at all our sporting events and bake for fundraisers. She loved playing bridge, cards with friends and in later years, enjoyed quiet afternoons in the gazebo, sipping an Iced Capp.

Louise proudly supported Donnie in his work with the Hantsport Fire Department and their home businesses. She managed the household, the fire phones, bookkeeping and reports — all while raising five busy children.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Donald; daughter, Nancy; granddaughter, Hayley; brothers, John and James; sisters, Laura, Ida and Margaret.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There will be no visitation. A celebration of Louise’s life will be held at a later date.

955 It is with profound sadness that the family of Burton Charles Eldridge announces that Burt left us June 27, 2021 a few days before his 85th birthday at Lionsgate hospital in North Vancouver, BC.

Burt was born in Ohio, Nova Scotia July 1, 1936 and was the only son of Charles Tooker and Eva Pauline Pulsifer Eldridge. His mother Pauline died from cancer when he was seven years old. His father subsequently married Annis Madeline Madden.

Burt grew up in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, fishing and lobstering on the East Coast. His hobbies also included hunting, stamp collecting, and watching sports. Burt's first full time job was as a teller at the Royal Bank. Burt enjoyed banking but decided he wanted to become a pilot. He was traveling on a train to attend flight school with the Canadian Armed Forces when he received word that his father had died. He returned to Yarmouth and subsequently resumed his interest in finance/accounting by leaving for New Brunswick to acquire a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University in Sackville. He then completed his Chartered Accountant Designation at McGill University and articled with the CA firm Riddlestead Graham and Hutchison in Montreal, the city where he met his future wife, Margaret.

Margaret and Burt married on July 11, 1964, and moved to Edmonton, Alberta to settle and raise their two children. Burt worked at Consumer and Corporate Affairs with the Federal government and then the Alberta Government. Burt was a chief investigative auditor testifying in the Code Inquiry into the Principal Group Ltd.. He testified in court for many days regarding his work uncovering and alerting officials to neglect and mismanagement. Burt retired from the Alberta Government and for a few years taught Accounting at the nearby Hobbema Reserve.

In 1998, Burt’s cross Canada tour finished on the west coast, in Vancouver where he worked for the Real Estate Council of BC as a PST Auditor until his declining health made it necessary for him to retire permanently. Burt enjoyed his work as a CA and had always taken on private clients to provide professional assistance and advice. In his retirement, Burt enjoyed gardening, building things and spending time with his grandchildren.

In his last years, Burt suffered from a degenerative neurological condition that greatly affected his mobility. He put up a heroic fight for more than a year following a fall at home June 9, 2020 that left him with a fractured neck and a bilateral brain bleed. He was in hospital from June 9th, 2020 to March 10, 2021 when he was discharged and admitted to Evergreen House Care Home where he, due to their inadequate care, began to rapidly decline physically and cognitively.

Burt believed in the value of hard work and living a productive life. He applied his financial skills to his personal life, avoiding waste and discovering efficient solutions to any challenge he faced. Burt would have still been working had his declining health not become so serious.

Burt’s passion was his family. He loved us all deeply. He was a kind and gentle man and was always available for us when we needed him. He will be greatly missed by us all forever.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Veteran’s Affairs Canada, Lionsgate Hospital, VETS or the Poppy Fund. Please consider lobbying the government to reform Long Term Care in BC.

956 It is with profound sadness that we announce that our family matriarch, Kris, passed away quietly on June 12, 2021, and has finally made the journey to be with her God. Born in Finland on April 24, 1924, Kris was orphaned from her parents Krarti and Onto Laine in 1939, and emigrated to Canada that same year. In 1943, she enrolled in the Canadian Womens Army Corps and served as a chef for the Officer Corps in various units in southern Ontario until the end of the war, when she was discharged at the rank of Sergeant. After leaving the Army, Kris eventually made her home in the East Kootenay mountains of British Columbia (Invermere) until she moved to Hantsport with her husband Roy in 2008. Kris was a Life Member of the Order of the Eastern Star and long-time member of the Daughters of the Nile. Within her 50 years plus in the OES, Kris held virtually every officer station including Worthy Matron many times over. In her waning years in OES she served as Chaplain in various Chapters in British Columbia and Nova Scotia. She was also appointed as Grand Representative for the State of Nevada in British Columbia. Kris was an avid gardener, a fantastic chef and above all, an animal lover; both domestic and wild. She was particularly fond of her pet cats, but could also be seen feeding strays, birds, deer and any other animal that found their way into her yard. She was proud to regale us with the story about the time as a young girl, she fed a cougar blueberries from the palm of her hand. Kris was predeceased by her first two husbands, Sid Scamon, and Don Anderson (both of British Columbia). Kris will also be sadly missed by her many new friends in and around Hantsport. Our family wishes to thank the staff of Ivy Meadows Long Term Facility in Beaver Bank for their excellent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, our Mom would be pleased if donations were made to an Animal Shelter of your choice. Laine, Kristine Katarina (I16226)

957 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our father, Maurice R. Fuller, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on October 26, 1930, in Summerville, he was a son of the late Captain Ralph and Edna (Chudleigh) Fuller.

Mike moved to Hantsport in 1936, where he spent his childhood years growing up on Holmes Hill.

Besides his parents, Mike was predeceased by his wife, Alice (2001); son, Ralph Charles (2017); infant grandsons, Christopher Greenlund (1974) and Jeremy Fisher (1992); grandson, Michael Flarow (2021); sons-in-law, Joseph Nolais (2020) and Wayne Paterson (2025); brothers, Perry, George and Malcolm and an infant sister.

Dad was immensely proud of his long military career, serving his country and attaining the rank of Master Warrant Officer. After five years of service in the Militia, he joined the Canadian Army in December 1951 and underwent training as a heavy vehicle mechanic. Subsequently, he was posted to the RCEME Workshop in Whitehorse, Yukon, from 1952 - 1955. In 1958, he relocated his family to Oromocto, New Brunswick, living there until 1976, when he was stationed to Chilliwack, B.C. In 1959, he participated in peace-keeping operations in Egypt. In April 1970, he was assigned to CFB Alert for a six-month period. Following his retirement from military service in July 1979, he transitioned into civilian life, continuing his work as a heavy equipment mechanic at the Chilliwack workshop. He ultimately retired again in 1992. Throughout his life, Dad was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years.

Prior to and after his retirement, Dad and Alice, travelled extensively across Canada and the US in their RV. He relished sharing his captivating stories, photographs and videos with family members. Over the years, he engaged in hunting and fishing in Oromocto with his sons and friends, always ensuring the freezer was stocked for the winter with the game they proudly brought home. In later years, he ventured into salmon fishing in the Fraser River, behind his home near Chilliwack, B.C. After 33 years in B.C., Dad returned to his roots in Nova Scotia in 2009.

Dad loved family gatherings and captured these cherished moments with his camera. He loved his family more than anything, always providing unwavering love and support throughout our lives. In 2017, after relocating to The Manning Retirement Home in Windsor, he reconnected with old friends from the 1940s, formed numerous new friendships and was adored and cherished by all those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in the funeral home chapel, Rev. James Haughn officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. Private family interment will take place in Loyal Hill Cemetery, Summerville.
