Brad's love of soccer and basketball was lifelong and he poured that passion into coaching and volunteering, giving countless kids the same joy he found in the game. Some of his happiest moments were spent snowboarding with his wife and daughters, carving through fresh powder; sailing aboard their sailboat, exploring the Chester islands and camping across the province in their tent trailer, creating memories his family will cherish forever. His family immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1936, accompanied by his father and mother, Jozef Koncovy and Maria (Pavlech) Koncová; brother, Anton and sister, Anna. Upon arriving in Canada, both Jozef and his father had their names anglicized by Immigration Canada to Josef. Affectionately known as "Zedko" to his grandchildren and "Koko" to his great-granddaughters, Joe was a beloved figure in his family. He passed away peacefully at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by family. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his daughter, Mary, whose memory he held dear and his brothers, Tony and Bill. Though his youth was filled with incredible adventures, like survival training in the far North, travelling the west coast with his buddy from Vancouver to Tijuana Mexico in a 15-year-old car that burned more oil than gas and even playing basketball against the Harlem Globetrotters, these were just a few of the unique stories that highlighted Joe's spirited nature. While he did not define himself by these moments, they were emblematic of his adventurous and curious spirit, always willing to embrace life’s surprises with joy and humour. Joe had a love for travel, his most memorable trips were travelling to Europe with his family and reuniting with his Slovak relatives as well as an unforgettable trip to visit family in Japan. During Joe's 22-year Canadian military career, one of his most notable roles involved his language skills, monitoring background chatter from Soviet communications. After retiring from the military, Joe continued to share his skills and passion as a teacher of Intermediate Industrial at Windsor Regional Vocational School, where he created many fond memories with students and colleagues. Joe had a knack for tinkering with projects in his garage, crafting metalworks and creating unique pieces with his hands. He found peace and joy at his beloved cottage in Baxters Harbour, where he spent countless hours with family and friends. Joe loved sports, especially hockey, in his younger years he coached minor hockey and in retirement he would plan his day around his favorite team. He was known for his warm personality and kindness. Whether he was with a long-time friend or a new acquaintance, Joe had a way of making everyone feel special. A simple trip to pick up eggs and bread could turn into a delightful three-hour adventure, filled with his interesting conversations. He also enjoyed a good snowstorm, deciding to get apples from a local farmer during a snowstorm seemed like a good idea at the time, but turned into a four hour ordeal involving a tow truck! | Koncovy, Josef (I4085)

Born May 16, 1958, in Windsor, Nova Scotia she was the daughter of the late Ivan (Whitey) and Zelda (Starratt) McLellan. Tammy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, as well as a kind sister, and a wonderful friend to all who knew her. She made friendships easily wherever she went. She had a love for animals, especially dogs and horses. Growing up in Hantsport, Tammy loved to ride and care for her horse, “Clipper”, never complaining about the “chores”. Kiwi, her loving canine friend, was by her side from the day she brought her home and a constant companion during her illness. Tammy lived in Red Deer, Alberta for several years where her two boys were born. She returned to Hantsport, always considered home, maintaining many close friendships. With her sons Jeremy and Jacob, Tammy made a move to Saint John, NB, to take a job with Moosehead Breweries, where they lived for a number of years. Tammy loved music! To play it, sing it or watch it, it didn’t matter. She enjoyed music festivals and met her husband, Tony, at a blue grass event! She loved to travel but Covid-19 restrictions and cancer disrupted her plans to spend her retirement winters in Florida. Tammy was always at peace at the beach! Her grandson Haylen was an incredible joy in her life, celebrating all his achievements with great pride. Tammy could always find the positive in people, and was quick to compliment their strengths. She would often say, “Life is too short to be doing something you don’t like!” The family appreciates and truly thank the many people who visited, shared memories, laughed, cried and cared for her during her illness! A very special thank you to the VON and Canadian Red Cross for their compassion and professionalism. | McLellan, Tammy Lynn (I7845)

Born in Saint John New Brunswick, Anne spent her childhood in Summerside PEI and Hantsport Nova Scotia graduating from Acadia University. Embarking on an adventure, Anne travelled to Lake Louise where she met her husband and lifelong partner, Charles Cole (Spike). After they married in 1967, Anne and Charlie settled in Toronto and then on to Aurora and Orillia. Anne started her career as a secretary in downtown Toronto and she went on to banking and apparel finishing at Reebok Canada. After retirement, Anne and Charlie opened Cranberry House Bed and Breakfast where they hosted countless guests over a 20-year period. This provided opportunities to meet people from around the world leading to many lasting friendships. Anne was full of energy and loved gardening, sewing, baking, decorating and was a crafty Euchre player. Anne loved searching for a bargain and her house is filled with treasures acquired at garage sales, auctions and antique stores. An accomplished artist, her paintings have hung proudly in galleries and businesses across Orillia. Anne loved to quilt, and she was pleased to see many people comforted from the cold with her designs. She was also very active in her community as volunteer at Soldier's Memorial Hospital, a member of the University Women's Club, a charter member of Probus, and the Monday Art Group. One of her last acts was to support the daily 11:30 am celebrations (Socially Distanced) on Museum Drive in Leacock Village which helped many have something to look forward to during Covid. A lot of her best memories in retirement came from involvement in these many organizations. She was predeceased by her parents, Al and Bessie Harlow. She was completely devoted to her family and loved to surprise people with baking or thoughtful gifts. Her family was the center of her world and her frequent small acts of love will always be cherished. Anne had true grit and a determined spirit as evidenced by getting both of her knees replaced at the same time. She was a treasure and will be greatly missed by her family and countless friends. | 902 | It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Phyllis Gertrude (Wightman) Holmes, 96, died at home on Sunday, February 26, 2023. Born in Wingham, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Janie Viola (Campbell) and James Chester Wightman. She was a graduate of Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, London, and she received a Certificate in Public Health Nursing from The University of Western Ontario. She was posted with the Victorian Order of Nurses to Nova Scotia, which became her beloved home for more than seventy years. Phyllis was a nurse at heart. When she took a break from active nursing to raise her children, she continued her lifelong passion for health care. She served on a number of health boards, including The Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia. She was humbled to have an award in her name created by the Valley Chapter, which was presented annually to a recipient for their outstanding contribution. She played an integral role in the establishment of Well Woman Clinics at Hants Community Hospital, and she was a member of Hantsport Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted participant in the volunteer program at Blanchard Fraser Memorial and Valley Regional Hospitals. On a couple of occasions, she served as nurse at school spring camps. She participated in the Terry Fox Run (or a portion thereof) for thirty-three years, her last run taking place just days before her ninety-fourth birthday. She lovingly supported several generations of her family through serious illness and end of life care. She had a gift for making people feel safe and comfortable. Phyllis was an active community member, and she was honoured to represent Hantsport as Volunteer of the Year. She was a member of Avon United Church (formerly St. James United), where she sang in the choir for many years, and she was a life member of the United Church Women. Through the years, she volunteered with the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, and she was touched to receive an honorary life membership from the Hantsport and Area Historical Society. Phyllis loved to write, which led her to enrol in creative writing classes at Acadia University in later years. She was a faithful correspondent, always in longhand, and she exchanged letters with family, friends and former classmates until she was no longer able. Never one to procrastinate, Phyllis was quick to send a thank-you note or to reach out to those experiencing a difficult time. Phyllis was an avid gardener. This spring will be particularly poignant when her spectacular peonies and irises appear, almost magically, in her perennial beds. Always an advocate of “not blowing your own horn”, Phyllis would, no doubt, cringe at all that has been written here. She was a remarkable, resilient woman, who cared deeply for others. She was our rock, our cheerleader, our compass, and we will continue to be inspired by her wisdom and her example. Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, C. | 915 | It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, John William Payzant, 90, of Bedford, Nova Scotia, on February 9th, 2021. He was born to parents, Allen Godfrey and Sadie Belle Payzant, on June 25th, 1930. He was predeceased by his parents, his beautiful wife, Shirley Elizabeth (Elliott), two brothers, Allen Frederick Payzant and Clyde Andrew Payzant and granddaughter, Tara Dawn Payzant. How does one summarize the life of this man? Dad left the family farm at the tender age of fourteen, to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a successful businessman, with a grade nine education. Beginning his work life earning $18 a week, at a furniture store in Windsor, Nova Scotia, he quickly realized after marrying the love of his life, Shirley, in 1951, and with the addition of their first child, that he needed to do better. They moved to Lr. Sackville in 1952, to begin working for Ted B. Blackburn at Blackburn Shopping Centre, one of the first shopping malls in the province. After years of hard work and gleaning many valuable business tips from Blackburn, Dad purchased the basement of the Blackburn building and established a hardware store. In 1969, Dad had built that business to a level that allowed him to build a new store on Sackville Drive, where it still operates today. In 1970, he joined ranks with the Home Hardware family of stores, largely due to the company’s guiding ethic- that community and the common good is simply good business. Dad did business in an “old fashioned” way, built on the philosophy of maintaining a good relationship with his customers. When the local housing boom started in the early 1970’s, he extended credit to many young families, who could not otherwise afford to to pay for all of the building materials they needed, all at once. Lending a helping hand was commonplace for Dad, having a generous and compassionate heart for those who needed a hand up. Those early years were hard work, where he regularly logged 70 hours a week, and even if the store was closed, the phone would ring from someone with an urgent need for something, and off he would go to unlock the door and fill that need for his customer. Dad served in many groups and committees, some of which include the Kinsmen Club of Sackville, the Lake District Recreation Association, the Sackville Chamber of Commerce and was a 40 year member of the the Atlantic Building Supply Dealers Association, where he served as chairman in 1989/90. Many would say that our Dad helped to build Sackville to what it is today. Words we have heard from many of his friends and acquaintances, describe him as, a true gentleman, community builder and leader, icon of Sackville, pillar, helper, Sackville advocate, hands on, down to earth, fair. A man who gave from his heart, a great friend, whose kindness benefited so many. Our father has left a rich legacy, considering his greatest wealth to be his family. Dad never forgot his roots and deep love for his parents small family farm in Bishopville, Nova Scotia. Every weekend, we would make the drive to his family homestead where we as children, loved to play and explore “the farm”, helping feed the cows, while visiting with Gram and our Uncle Clyde. His grandchildren and great grandchildren all still love and enjoy the family property, that he so lovingly preserved for us. Dad has instilled in us the importance of honesty, hard work, fairness, generosity, supporting local business and most of all, family. We are beyond blessed to have had this gentle man to call “Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad. We have lost a great patriarch and we will love you forever, Dad. Internment shall be at the Bishopville Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cobequid Community Health Centre http://www.cobequidfoundation.ca or the Bishopville Baptist Church. Cheques can be made out to Bishopville Baptist Church c/o Audrey Crowell 1287 Bishopville Rd, RR1, Hantsport, N.S., B0P 1P0 | Payzant, John William (I6160)

| 916 | It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Susan Patricia Weatherbee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in Wolfville at the age of 77. Mom had many hobbies over the years which included knitting (we all had Lopi sweaters), crocheting, sewing, and cooking. Her love of cooking and baking led her to the restaurant industry. All of her hard work made it possible for her to own her own restaurant for several years. She was very well known for her sweet treats like donuts, egg tarts, chocolate cake and coconut cream pie. If you know, you know. She also enjoyed bingo and late night card games (right Dusten!). Our mother really enjoyed going to the beach, sitting and watching the waves. In later years her fall adventures with Sheila and Angie, travelling to beaches in PEI and from one end of Nova Scotia to the other. Susan was predeceased by her mother, Hattie Wickinson, sister Milred (Gug), brother Lorne, chosen sister, Shirley Johnston, and her greatest loss, son, Jody. | 918 | It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Steven Wayne "Steve" Atwell, of Hantsport, in the Valley Regional Hospital, at the age of 66. Steve was born in Windsor and was one of sixteen children of the late Clinton and Jean (Bonang) Atwell. Steve started his career with Minas Basin Pulp and Power and dedicated 13 years at the sawmill until its closure. He spent the next 31 years working at Canadian Keyes Fibre Company Limited (CKF). In his final years at CKF he worked as material handler until his retirement in 2020. As a young man, Steve is remembered as an overall athlete and fierce competitor who enjoyed playing soccer and baseball and could make a real competition out of any game. Steve’s presence will be dearly missed by all those who knew him and called on him whenever they needed a helping hand. He had a remarkable gift for finding humor in every situation and using his playful spirit to uplift those around him. He will be remembered most for his kind and generous spirit. Steve spent his life surrounded by the love and support of a large circle of family and friends. In addition to his parents, Clinton and Jean, he was predeceased by brothers Gary, Leonard and Gordon "Pud". Steve had a special relationship with each one of his four grandsons. Steve was a steadfast family man, who committed his life to raising his three children and four grandchildren. His role as grandfather brought him immense joy and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled. Though Steve may no longer walk alongside us, his spirit will forever remain a guiding light, reminding us to show up for each other, love fiercely and cherish each precious moment.
