Born in Hants Border on February 13, 1929, he was a son of the late James and Ola (Lockhart) Davies. In his younger years, Dad enjoyed skating and playing hockey and baseball. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and banjo. Dad learned the value of hard work being raised on a small farm in Hants Border. When the school day was over, he tended to the livestock and vegetable gardens and was responsible for bringing in firewood. Ironically, his love of burning wood to heat his own home led to an unfortunate fall and a fractured hip; however, he didn't get discouraged and vowed he would eventually be back in the woodpile. Dad attended school in Hants Border and Hantsport. He graduated from Hantsport High School and furthered his education, becoming a licensed electrician. He was a very proud tradesman. Dad was employed with H.B.M. Mechanical Limited in Wolfville which provided him and fellow employee Charles O'Leary (deceased) with opportunities to work in various places in Nova Scotia. Both had young families and saw a need for service work in Wolfville and surrounding areas. A decision was made to start their own business. In 1961, Davies & O'Leary Limited was formed and continues to operate today. For 57 years, Dad loved serving his many customers with electrical, plumbing, heating and appliance service. He appreciated each and every customer, working long hours including nights and weekends to provide service. Dad was committed to the trade and his craft. He had a very strong work ethic, which attributed to years of success of doing what he loved. Dad earned the title of being a well-respected tradesman in the area. Dad was never afraid of a challenge. In addition to working long hours with the business, he still found time for extracurricular activities. Dad coached Wolfville Minor Hockey, was involved with the Wolfville Lions Club, enjoyed watching NHL hockey, and loved taking us in his motorboat on the Minas Basin with trips to Boot Island to explore. After he retired, Dad spent many hours working outdoors at his property which brought him so much enjoyment. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Carlton; and sister-in-law, Mildred (King). The family wishes to thank the staff of Valley Regional Hospital for their compassion, kindness and care during his stay. 839 HATCH, Peter Calvin, R.C.M.P. (S.Sgt. Ret\'d)
Age 82, of Hantsport, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, in Blomidon Court, Greenwich, Kings Co., where he had resided since August. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to staff at Blomidon Court for their compassion and care during his stay there. Born on May 25, 1933, in Red Head Cove, N.L., Peter was the son of the late Nicholas and Johanna (Duggan) Hatch. He began his career with the RCMP in 1951, in Ottawa at A Division. During the course of his career, he held positions in Montreal, North Sydney, Halifax, Charlottetown, Burin, St. John\'s, before retiring as Staff Sergeant, Sub Division NCO in the Corner Brook, N.L. Detachment. In 1961, Peter was selected for a course in Cryptography (codes and ciphers) with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals at their school in Kingston, Ont. This set off his lifelong addiction to cryptograms and cryptoquotes, which led him to buy just about every newspaper, magazine and book that published them. After retirement, he became an insurance underwriter with Occidental Life Insurance Company in Halifax, a career which he thoroughly enjoyed. On moving to the Annapolis Valley, he settled into the field of security with Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company in Hantsport. Peter had an intense love of history and engrossed himself in learning. He could not seem to absorb enough and would spend hours researching and reading. There wasn\'t a subject he didn\'t enthusiastically embrace. He was the quintessential storyteller and enjoyed spinning a good yarn. He thoroughly enjoyed keeping the Newfoundland language alive through his letters to the editor of local papers. He once described himself as a frustrated Bob Cratchit and hence became involved in various associations, usually involving areas of finance. His love of finance led him to positions as the founding President of the Mercy Convent School PTA, St. John\'s (the first PTA in the Catholic School System in Newfoundland), Secretary/Treasurer and later President of St. Bonaventure\'s College Men\'s Association, St. John\'s, member of the Finance Committee Parish Councils St. John\'s, Corner Brook, N.L. and Windsor, and Treasurer of the Orchard Valley Branch of the Federal Superannuates National Association, Kentville, for almost 20 years. Peter was also a proud member of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program with Canada Revenue Agency, assisting seniors and persons in need with tax returns and related matters. Besides his parents, Nicholas and Johanna (Duggan) Hatch, he was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, the former Stella Marie Hines (1996); his daughter, Sharon Anne Hatch (2004); brother, William Hatch (1980) (of Toronto, Ont.).
