| 523 | Captain Peleg Holmes 3rd. Born 1785 at Yarmouth N.S. married 1st 1806, Mary Trefry, 2nd married Mary Lockhart of Horton. When he removed to Halfway River with his wife and family, in 1820 they brought 8 children with them. In 1821 he bought land from Peter Coalfleet and Sam Beckwith, and settled in Lower Horton. When the Baptist Church was organized in 1830 he was ordained Deacon. Thereafter, he was generally addressed as Deacon or Deacon Peleg Holmes. His house was just across the Horton-Falmouth Township line, on the Bluff Road. He resided there all of his life. Peleg died December 3rd. 1856. | 524 | Captain Ray C. RILEY — Hantsport Of Hantsport, passed away peacefully May 30, 2022, at home, as he would have wished. He lived most of his 93 years in his family home except for a few years in Liverpool during the war when his father worked for Mersey Paper. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Stella (Taylor); sister, Irma Ouellette; and wife, Jean (Silver). Ray loved playing baseball and hockey in his youth and was avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. He was pleased to know grandson, Reagan, shared his love of baseball and enjoyed hearing the stories of his games, both baseball and hockey. Ray was a volunteer fireman for the Hantsport Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and all manners of carpentry and construction. He always had a project on the go and enjoyed lending a hand to others. When Ray was not on land, he was at sea. At 17, he went on what was envisioned to be a single trip and it turned into a 55 year career sailing almost exclusively for Gypsum Transportation Limited, with short stint as Captain of the Otis Wack in Hantsport. During his career he earned a Master Mariner (Foreign Going) license and held a Pilot’s License for the Bras d’Or Lakes (Little Narrows). He took command of new ships direct from the shipyards in Ontario, Germany, and Korea but spent the majority of this career plying the sea to and from various ports between the Eastern Seaboard and the Caribbean, always returning home to his family in Hantsport. In 2010 he was on board a barge in the Avon River, bringing a church from Walton to the Avondale dock. He later commented that his last job was “delivering a church with Capt. Stanley Lord”. “A fine, sturdy ship to sail in. And revered old shipmates to crew. And with an angel riding the Masthead And Land, now long out of view”. | 526 | CARD, Katherine Mary \'Kaye\' Age 84, of Windsor, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2014, in the R.E.A.L. Residence, Windsor. Born on March 29, 1930, in Centre Burlington, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Ralph Mann Card and Mary Eulalie (Nunn) Card. Kaye was formerly employed for over 25 years in the office at CKF Inc., Hantsport, until she retired. Previously, she had also worked at Stephens & Yeaton’s Auto Dealership, Windsor. She enjoyed travelling, playing cards and loved gardening and most of all visiting and keeping in contact with her many friends. Kaye is survived by many cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, James Card (February 29, 2012) and a brother in infancy, Lockhart Card. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, in Centre Burlington Cemetery, Highway 215, Centre Burlington; The Rev. | 527 | CAREY, Anne Margaret — 97, formerly of Hantsport, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012, in Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Avondale, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Manson and Irene (Boyd) Sanford. Throughout her working career, she had been employed in retail sales and had owned and operated a confectionary store in Hantsport. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society of Avonport and was a Brownie leader. She played the organ for many years in Avonport and Hantsport churches as well as school concerts and was an accompanist for the Kings County Music Festival. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett Carey; daughter, Janis Reeves; stepdaughter, Mauretia Dunfield; stepsons, Orren and Earl; sister, Fredia Andrews; brothers, Avon, Morien and Oris; grandson, Bill Carey. | 528 | Carl Edward Wilcox Obituary It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Carl Edward Wilcox, 69, of Kennetcook, NS. Carl passed away surrounded by his family in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, NS, on January 8th, 2025. Carl was born in Toronto, ON, to the late Edward and Frances (Coffill) Wilcox on March 30th, 1955. Carl and his five siblings grew up in Hantsport, NS, where he had many fond memories, often involving practical jokes on friends and neighbours. Carl always had a love of anything with an engine and worked in many jobs as both a mechanic and truck driver throughout his life; including the Annapolis Valley Ready-Mix Cement Plant, Long Haul Trucking and many years at the Bill Lynch Shows where he made many lifelong friendships. In the 90’s Carl could often be found at his pool hall, Downtown Amusements, in Windsor, NS, which he co-owned and operated, making many great friends and memories along the way! Carl had a great sense of humour and loved to joke around and carry on. He was a loyal friend who you could always call on if you ever needed a hand. He loved music, playing guitar, telling stories of all his adventures and going for “Sunday” drives often to go visit family and friends. He was a wonderful Dad, Brother, Uncle, Grampie and Friend and he will be missed dearly! He is preceded in death by his Father, Edward Ralph Wilcox of Bay Roberts, NL. | 529 | Carl William SALTER — Falmouth Age 87, of Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2023, at home. Born April 28, 1936, in Hantsport, he was a son of the late William and Doris “Pauline” (Dill) Salter. Carl was a proud 27-year veteran firefighter of Hantsport Fire Department. He loved snowmobiling, Thursday night bowling league in New Minas, horses and attending exhibitions. Carl spent 22 years at CKF Inc., followed by 20 years as a Postal Clerk in Hantsport. His favourite day of the year was Hantsport’s Canada Day celebrations. Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his first wife, the former Nancy Swan; son, David; sister, Maxine (George) Tucker; granddaughter, Allison (Salter) Holthoff; and second wife, Maureen. Thank you to the Ivy Meadows staff for the care they provided Carl. | 530 | Carleton Vern Schofield, 89 of Lockhartville, passed away March 16, 2020 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. He was the son of the late Arch and Clara (Croft) Schofield. Carleton worked at the Minas Basin Pulp & Power for over 20 years, he also worked in carpentry until his retirement. Carleton also took pride in coaching, male and female, tug-of-war teams. He received much recognition from the province of Nova Scotia and his teams won many trophies. Carleton absolutely loved the outdoors and had many hobbies and he enjoyed his time fishing and hunting, which took top priorities. He also took pleasure in archery and bowling. Carleton was an excellent woodsman and outdoorsman, and he taught his skills to many. He was devoted to his family and friends, and known as Gramps or Pupa. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, Carleton was predeceased by his beloved wife Madeline, February 9, 2020; sisters Eileen and Myril; brothers Clarence and Keith. Born in Hull, Que., on December 11, 1942, she was a daughter to the late Aldege and Helen (Hoff) Derouin. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Rita LaBelle, Pierrette Morin, Claire Frizzle and Denise Coffin. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. | 532 | Carolyn departed this life on her own terms. She passed with her family around her in the QE2 and has finally left behind her recent years of constant pain. Over the course of her 81 years she was loved by many and touched all those around her. She was a constant source of strength, kindness and help to many and will be greatly missed. Born in South Berwick on Halloween, she was raised in South Berwick and Weston in the Annapolis Valley. She started her education in a two room school house at Dempsey Corner. followed by Western Kings High School. During her early years she was involved in the then new world of computers and mastered several programming languages as she achieved her B.A. degree at Dalhousie, after time spent studying at the University of Toronto and Acadia. She sacrificed a career, to be a home maker and support her husband David in his endeavours. As time progressed, computers made way for horses and she became a devoted equestrian. Working tirelessly over the years as she pursued her riding career. She was seldom happier than when she was with her friends at the barn working with horses. For decades Windgate Farms became her home away from home. Carolyn was also an amazing cook, and her talent often was given a chance to shine at family gatherings, and the horse shows she catered. Her lasagna and sherry trifle are still a legend to this day. There was never a cooking show on TV that she didn't watch. Another passion was reading. She was an avid reader for her entire life, starting first with Harlequin novels, then progressing to murder mystery and detective stories. So much so, that she exhausted the circulation desks at all of the local libraries Which required them to order books in for her. As she got older, she switched to audio books, but her love for the stories themselves continued unabated. Her dry wit was formed by years of British comedies, with Monty Python and Black Adder being a few favourites. She was an accomplished traveller and toured the Pacific Rim in 1979. As far as we know, her sneakers are still hanging somewhere in a mango tree in Australia after her husband David used them to try and get some mangoes. She spent many winters on the island of Montserrat and enjoyed swimming in the ocean. Carolyn was an enthusiastic gardener; her gardens and houseplants were a wonder to all and a sight to behold in the summer. Her artistic side was often expressed through writing, drawing, art and especially quilting, with many amazing life/story quilts being gifted to family members and friends over the years. In 2000 her quilt "Loons in Flight" won an award and hung in the Lieutenant Governor residence on display for a year. While she was only 4'8" her departure has left a giant void in the hearts of those who knew her. The family would like to express special thanks to Vanessa Croft for her care and help over the last 7 years, we know Carolyn thought the world of you. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring in her beloved Annapolis Valley. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshank's funeral home in Halifax. He married Miss Marjorie Doerr Aug. 10, 1940 in Ohio. The moved to Cass City recently. He worked for AC Spark Plug, Flint for many years. He retired in 1966. | 536 | Cecil Deal Wile, 90, Middleton, NS passed away peacefully on January 16, 2013. Born in Mount Denson, N.S. on July 20, 1922, he was a son of the late Willard and Bessie (Deal) Wile. Cecil was an avid gardener and well known exhibitor of vegetables. Cecil joined the R.C.A.F. as an aero-engine mechanic in 1941 and served as an air gunner during WWII from 1943 - 1945. Following his war service he left the Force and co- founded the Panuke Motor Company Ltd with brothers Lawrence and Fred. Cecil re-enlisted in 1949 and retired from the R.C.A.F. in 1972 earning numerous awards throughout his service including the Europe Star, France and Germany Clasps, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer War Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration. He was an active member of Middleton Baptist Church serving at various times as trustee, deacon and usher. He was a life member of the Wilmot Garden Club and shared the N.S.A.G.C. gardener of the year award along with his wife (Grace) in 1984. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kingston Branch 98. He married Rowena (Grace) Illsley in 1953. He is survived by daughters Linda (John) Lunney, Carringbah, N.S.W. | 539 | Cheryl Juanita (Garrison) Gertridge of Bedford, Passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax. She was born October 16, 1951 in Boutiliers Point, NS. Predeceased by her parents, Glen and Juanita (Snair), sisters Corrine Armitage, and Linda Andrews. In the past, Cheryl was a competitive figure skater and coach. She volunteered her time on behalf of many charities and organizations, including Northwood Center, Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, and Meals on Wheels, just to name a few. Most of Cheryl’s working career was devoted to the banking sector, 19 years of which were with the Royal Bank. Cheryl loved the outdoors, particularly camping, and she so looked forward to being at the cottage at Butler Lake in East Dalhousie. Cheryl touched many hearts and more specifically, stomachs, as she was always baking for people, quite often, total strangers. Her domain was the kitchen. In recent years she bestowed much of her love and energy upon her grandchildren, whom she just could not get enough of. Cheryl was a very giving and generous person with a great sense of humour. She lived in Ottawa, Ontario for her school years and returned to Halifax, NS to attend St. Mary's University where she received her BA degree with honours in Anthropology. Cheryl's biggest love was reading. She worked for many years at Scotiabank in Ottawa, as well as Calgary. She spent the last many years working for DMV Nova Scotia and retired in November 2019. She spent several years looking after her parents and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels. She also enjoyed gardening and created many gardens at her parents' property. | 542 | CHIPMAN, Dorothy 'Lynn' — 50, of Coldbrook. Our loving and thoughtful wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to all, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lynn grew up in Hants Border, Kings Co. She attended Horton District High School and graduated from the stenography program at Kingstec Campus in 1980. Lynn worked at Acadia University for 33 years and became Senior Network Analyst of The Department of Technology Services in 1997, then Supervisor of Information systems in 2008, and Manager in 2009. During her working career, Lynn studied part time and received her Certificate in Business in 1992 and Diploma in 1993. She obtained her Certificate in Computer Science in 1998, and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2007 from Acadia University. Lynn loved to travel. Her most recent trip was to Disneyworld, Florida last spring with her daughter, granddaughter and spouse. Lynn selflessly gave to others. She volunteered with Big Brothers & Big Sisters and raised money for breast cancer, as well as ran several marathons, including Run for the Cure. Lynn was an avid squash player, and was President of The Kings County Squash Club in 2010 and 2011. She loved playing guitar, gardening, decorating, frenchy shopping, and spending time with family and friends. Lynn especially enjoyed Sunday suppers, holidays and birthdays with family at her Mother’s house. Lynn will be remembered for her beautiful smile, disposition, and her kindness to others. He lived in Hilden for several years and was a recent resident of Townsview Estates. Born in Sheet Harbour, June 12, 1943 to the late James Frederick and Mary (Naugler) Chittick. He worked for Brookfield Lumber for over 20 years and later worked nights at Walmart, Truro. Dennis loved his car, always keeping it washed and clean. He enjoyed singing country songs and dancing. | 545 | CHITTICK, Donald Raymond — 85, peacefully passed away with family by his side Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born July 2, 1927, in Sheet Harbour, he was a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Naugler) and James Frederick Chittick. Donald joined the Bank of Nova Scotia after high school in Sheet Harbour. He went on as branch manager in Halifax, Windsor, Ont. and Barrie, Ont. He travelled Canada wide as a bank inspector and worked at the head office in Toronto for the last 17 years of his career. Donald was an active member of the community in Barrie; a social activist; president of several charitable organizations; spearheaded the first neighbourhood watch program in Barrie; lobbied for the CN VIA Rail commuters program from Barrie to Toronto; and while the president of Barrie’s Red Cross division, he developed the first emergency preparedness plan for The County of Simcoe which was later implemented for the rest of Ontario. After retiring, he took a keen interest in Genealogy and traced his Chittick \'Irish\' roots in detail. Donald was a member of the Masons Eureka Lodge No. 42 at Sheet Harbour and recently received his 55year Membership Pin. Donald was an avid curler, cross-county skier and enjoyed family excursions. He never hesitated to drive \'Home\' to Sheet Harbour many summers to visit his parents and siblings. Donald was a kind and caring man, his strong ethics and integrity defined his life and this is the legacy he leaves for his children. Predeceased by brothers, John Arnett, E. | 546 | CHITTICK, Ernest Leroy Age 81, of Sheet Harbour, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014 in Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Sheet Harbour. Born in Sheet Harbour on October 31, 1932, he was a son of the late Frederick and Mary (Naugler) Chittick. Leroy worked as a river driver and was an excellent logger in his earlier years; he was employed with Scott Paper Mill for 13 years. Leroy did general contracting, retiring from Mactara as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed playing cards, splitting his wood, and tinkering around the yard. Predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Ramona \'Noan\' Chittick; brothers, Frederick, Raymond, Arnett, Warren, and brother-in-law, Donald Hartling; sister-in-law, Roberta Chittick. | 547 | CHITTICK, Roberta Mae Passed away October 27, 2013, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Roberta was born in her family home January 6, 1935 in Eureka, Pictou Co. to Annabelle (MacKay) and Alexander Mackenzie. During her youth Roberta’s gifted singing voice and performances were the pride of her parents and local community; after high school Roberta studied nursing and in 1956 graduated from the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. Roberta went on to pursue an illustrious career as a registered nurse with clinical specialties in Maternal Child (Natural Child Birth), Emergency and Geriatrics. A natural leader throughout her career and in her community, Roberta was a pioneer in social activism lending her power, voice, time and efforts toward supporting feminist ideologies. Roberta was the president of the Simcoe County Kiwanis, helped open the MacLaren Art Centre and the Barrier Rape Crisis Centre. Roberta loved gardening, was an avid curler, bridge player and enjoyed taking on an engaged role in political debate and social issues. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late Roland and Joann (Coffill) Spencer (of Hantsport). Lois loved her family and had a good sense of humour. She enjoyed books, poetry, and word games. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in October 1965. As a full time minister for the past 14 years, she loved telling others about her faith in the Creator, Jehovah and his beautiful hope for a future paradise here on earth. Her trust in Jehovah’s promise of the resurrection remained strong right up to the moment she fell asleep peacefully. | 549 | CHURCHILL, EZRA A., merchant, shipbuilder, and politician; b. 1804 at Yarmouth, N.S., to Ezra Churchill and Elizabeth Trefry; d. 8 May 1874 in Ottawa, Ont. Ezra A. Churchill’s father, a mate on a Yarmouth brigantine, was lost with his ship, Hibernia, in 1806, and his mother returned to her home in Hantsport, where she remarried and raised her son. On 10 Nov. 1824 Ezra Churchill married Ann Davidson of Falmouth, N.S., and they had two sons and several daughters. Following the death of his first wife, he married Rachel Burgess of Billtown, N.S., by whom he had four children; only one son lived beyond infancy. Ezra Churchill began his career in Hantsport. In 1841 he bought shares in a small brigantine, and in 1844 he commissioned the building of another brigantine of 128 tons. In the 1850s he bought shares in at least two more vessels and owned the controlling interest in five others. One of these, the 697-ton Morning Star, launched in 1856, was the first ship built by Churchill; it was followed by such large vessels as the 1,138-ton La Gloire, built in 1862, the 1,383-ton Marlborough, built the following year, and the 1,050-ton British America, launched in 1869. Like other vessels built in the province, they were cargo ships with the blunt lines of the work ship rather than the sleek lines of the clipper ships which were designed for speed. Churchill differed from other builders at the time because he left much of the construction to his master builder, Robert Fuller. His yards continued to build smaller vessels suitable for the coastal trade long after other major yards had ceased this practice. At his death, his fleet and yards, among the foremost in the province, were taken over by his two sons, John and George. In the mid–1880s the Churchill yards, like other shipyards in the provinces, began to decline. Churchill, who was obviously interested in the commercial and financial aspects of shipping, became involved with an attempt to establish a new provincial bank. A charter was granted in 1864 by the legislature for the Mutual Bank of Nova Scotia. The project did not develop any further, however, despite the support of the finance minister, Isaac Levesconte, and other prominent Conservative assemblymen including H. A. N. Kaulback of Lunenburg and Peter Smyth of Inverness. In 1855 Churchill was elected to the assembly as the member for Falmouth Township. When this seat was abolished in 1859, he sat as a member for Hants County, North Division, from 1859 until 1867. He was a relatively quiet supporter of the Conservative party but withheld support from Charles Tupper* by abstaining in the 1866 vote on confederation. He did not take part in the 1867 general election but joined with Jeremiah Northup to help elect Joseph Howe in the “better terms” by-election of 1869. Besides her parents Violet was predeceased by her first husband James Rhodes (1956) and her second husband Winston Churchill (2001) her daughter Shirley (Sanford) Ruggles and her 12 siblings. A graveside committal service will take place in late April or early May (will be posted here later) in the Riverview Haven Cemetery, Brooklyn. | 553 | Claire Rita Frizzle Age 80, of Hantsport, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 26, 2021. Born in Ottawa, she was a daughter of the late Aldege "Blackie" and Helen (Hoff) Derouin. Mom moved to Hantsport at the age of seven and had to learn to speak English, which she said was a challenging task. In her youth, she excelled in swimming and held many Provincial records. Mom developed many lifelong friends whom she regularly kept in touch with, you all know who you are. Once Brian and I grew to be able to somewhat look after ourselves, Mom began volunteering at Hants Community Hospital. She did this for 25 years, something she truly enjoyed and took great pride in helping the patients. She was predeceased by her husband, Bev; and sisters, Rita and Pierrette; her companion, Dale Hiltz. | 554 | CLARK (Myatt), Olive Amelia Olive passed away on May 10, 2020, after a full and happy life. She was born on July 17, 1927, to parents Minnie and Albert Myatt. Olive grew up in Oxford and shared many warm memories of times with her three sisters. After graduation, Olive attended business college in Truro and then joined the faculty as a teacher. Life changed for Olive when she met Allister, with whom she shared a romance lasting over 40 years. After a special chapter as newlyweds in Canning, Olive and Al moved to Hantsport where Olive was very active in the community. She played key roles with the United Church Valley Presbytery, St. James United Church, the UCW as a Life Member and the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. She was a founding member of the Hantsport and Area Historical Society. She was proud to have been recognized by the province and town of Hantsport for \"exceptional volunteer service\". She became an expert at anything she tackled, including sewing, painting, bridge, gardening, and her famous cherry squares. Olive was happiest spending hours on the front porch with Allister, a pot of tea and plate of sweets ready for the many friends passing by. In earlier years she loved family summer vacations, exploring Canada and the United States. Her grandsons were a special blessing and she was very proud of their adventures and accomplishments. Olive was predeceased by husband, Allister; and sisters, Eileen, Eleanor; and little sister and best friend, Shirley. The family would like to thank those who were helping hands, allowing Olive to enjoy her later years in her Hantsport home. Our appreciation also goes to all those who cared for her in Windsor Elms. There will be a family gathering at a future date. | 555 | CLARK, Allister Roy - 69, Hantsport, Hants County, died November 20, 1993, at home. Born in Meadowville, Pictou County, he was a son of the late Roderick and Isabel (Elliott) Clark. He received his early education at Meadowville, graduated from Pictou Academy and entered Acadia University in 1940. After service in the RCAF as a flight sergeant, he returned to university, earning a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of education and subsequently, a master of arts. He formerly taught at Kings County Academy and was principal of Canning School. He moved to Hantsport in 1952 where he was supervising principal until his retirement in 1985. He was deeply involved in the community. In his earlier years, he coached many sports with a special interest in track and field. He was a former president of Hantsport Memorial Community Centre and for many years was on the board of directors. He was a former president of the Hants County VON; the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society; Hants County Acadia Alumnus and executive member of the Hants County Retired Teachers Association. He was founding president of the Hantsport and Area Historical Society. A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, he was an adherent of St. James United Church, Hantsport and served for many years in the Sunday school and on the official board. He is survived by his wife, the former Olive Myatt; sister, Clarice (Mrs. Kenneth Murray), Valley, Colchester County; a number of nieces and nephews. | Clark, Allister Roy (I3255)
