| 401 | Archibald Holmes A retired civil engineer, Archibald Rettie (Rett) Holmes, 86, of 1169 Argyle Rd died Tuesday at Metropolitan Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Nova Scotia and came to Windsor three years ago. Mr. Holmes was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church and the Professional Engineers of Canada. He is survived by his widow, Florence; three daughter, Mrs. John Broughall (Helen), Toronto; Mrs. William Pretty (Elizabeth), Pennsylvania, and Mrs. John Reid (Margeret), Windsor, and one brother, George, New Jersey. There are seven grandchildren. The body will rest at the Walter D. Kelly Funeral Home, Wyandotte St. E. at Devonshire Rd., until Thursday at 9 a.m. The funeral will be held at St. Mary's Church at 10 a.m. Canoa F. C. McRitchie will officiate. Born on August 21, 1945, in Windsor, Hants Co., he was a son of Gladys (Saulnier) Arenburg and the late Claude Arenburg. David studied barbering at N.I.T. Halifax and had also worked at Hantsport Pulp and Paper. David loved people and could often be seen walking along the streets of Windsor with his mother and sister, stopping to chat with everyone along the way. You always knew when you visited David that you would get a great big hug and many compliments. Rest in peace, David. Evelyn graduated from Colchester Academy in 1927, and from Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro, in 1929. She was a school teacher for over 32 years, having taught at Milford Station, Melanson, Hantsport, Falmouth, Windsor Academy, Windsor Regional and retired from Windsor Elementary School. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Lawrence Churchill Armstrong (1972); sister, Sylvia Stevens; brother, Royal \'Roy\' Tattrie; nephew, Frederick \'Fred\' Stevens. Morris was a truck driver for most of his life, except for number of years when he worked doing siding with Clarey Reynolds. Morris loved and drove trucks for many trucking companies throughout Nova Scotia well into his early 70's. He was predeceased by his infant son Paul Jeffrey (1973), sisters Harriett Bishop (2002) and Marion Armstrong (1962). Born in the family home at Curry\'s Corner, Arnold was the son of the late Harold Jackson, and Georgia (O\'Toole) Barker. He was employed with Fundy Gypsum Company for 40 years and worked for F. H. Dodge and R.G. Smith as well. He was also a volunteer with the Curry\'s Corner Fire Department. Arnold enjoyed entertaining family and friends with his storytelling and jokes, he could always be called upon to fix things for other people, and he especially enjoyed his luncheons with Claire at the Casino. He was predeceased by grandsons, Justin Scott Burgess, and Neal Stephen Walsh; brother, Owen; sister, Helen Rourke. | 407 | Arnold William Pinch, 75, of Lockhartville, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2023, at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville. Born on August 2, 1948, he was a son of the late Florence and Gilbert Pinch of West Brooklyn. Arnold was renowned for his abundant charm and quick wit, he was the constant source of smiles within his wide social circle. He had a loving heart and was a devoted caretaker to his partner, Bonnie, and many beloved dogs over the years: Smokey, Muffin, Benjie, Maggie, and most recently, his beloved Tippy. Strong-willed, with a stubborn streak, Arnold’s survivor mentality made him tougher than most; living through serious electrocution at 56 years of age and an aneurysm at 75. He loved hunting, gardening, following WWE wrestling, a well-cooked breakfast, and a strong cup of tea. Over the years, Arnold’s work life focused mainly on roles in construction and agriculture. He was a painter and apple picker extraordinaire. He enjoyed his time working for ACA Poultry, Carey Brothers, TK Construction, D&M Lightfoot Farms, and Anderson’s Farm. | 411 | Arthur John Lockhart, born in Lockhartville, Kings County, N.S., was the eldest son of Capt. Nathan Albert Lockhart and Elizabeth Ann (nee Bezanson). Lockhart explained to A.W.H. Eaton that he grew up surrounded by and reading literature. At the age of seventeen, he moved to Wolfville and lived with Mr. Major Theakston, then the editor of the Wolfville Acadian. Not long after he moved to Cambridge, Mass., and worked in the University Press on the publication every Saturday. Lockhart entered religious life in 1868. By 1871, he was assisting the pastor in St. Andrews, N.B. In 1872, he entered the Methodist Episcopal Conference of Eastern Maine. Lockhart married Adelaide Beckerton of St. Andrews in 1873. | 412 | Arthur Kenneth West, 93, Lockhartville, NS, born November 26, 1930, eldest child of Asahel and Marjorie (Hutchinson) West. He lived in Lockhartville all his life. Arthur was a very hard worker, he began working at the young age of 13 picking apples, he also logged in the woods and then in 1951 went to work at Minas Basin where he worked for 23 years. He did this all while helping his father milk his herd of cattle each day until he left to pursue his dream of owning a dairy farm. Arthur married his wife June on June 29, 1957. Arthur loved his cows and farm; he and June built a successful business together. Arthur worked the farm until he retired in 1992, however he never fully retired as he was always an extra hand on the farm, he was still raking hay last summer at the age of 92. After retiring Arthur and June bought a motorhome. They travelled across Canada many times visiting his brother Paul and family, they travelled as far west as the Pacific Coast, North to the Yukon, south to Wisconsin and east to Newfoundland. Arthur loved tug of war and competed for many years on different teams. He won the Maritime Championship while pulling for the Lockhartville Tug of War team. Arthur and June were members of The Stoney Hill Baptist Church in Lockhartville, they thoroughly enjoyed the many hymn sings and events put on here and in many other local churches. Arthur was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Asahel West, his brother Russell West, brothers-in-law Gerald Hartt and Ross Tracey. Grandsons, Dave Rozee, Joshua Rozee and Brandon West. | 413 | Arthur W. Graham, 66, mariner, pioneer river steamboat operator and ship designer, died at his home, 761 East Lincoln street, Friday following an attack of heart trouble. Funeral services will be held at 1 P. M. Monday at the Portland crematorium. Mr. Graham had been foreman of the Burnside bridge since the completion of the span two years ago. He sprang from a family stock whose history was rich in the lore of the sea. His forebearers on both sides of the family for three generations back had been master mariners. When a mere lad he went down to the sea and sailed before the mast. In 1885 he came to Portland and had made his home here since. He was well known as a master mariner and river steamboat man. With his two brothers, A. B. Graham and John N. Graham, he owned and conducted the Oregon City Transportation company, which operated a fleet of river boats on the Willamette between Portland and Corvallis from 1886 to 1919. The names of the boats owned by the company ended in “ona.” Many of them were designed by Mr. Graham, who was an expert in that line. The most famous were the Altona, the Pomona and the Grahamona. It was said that he could perform the duties of any man on a boat with equal skill. He is survived by his widow, Anna L. Graham; two children, Clyde C. and Lena A. Graham of Portland; two brothers, A. B. Graham of Portland and John N. Graham of Seaside, and three sisters, Mrs. G. Fox and Mrs. R. D. Morrill of Portland and Mrs. William Anderson of Oregon City. Born on August 22nd, 1948, in Truro, he was the son of the late Stewart and Marion (Jeffers) Atkinson. In 1967 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - fulfilling his childhood dream - serving in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ottawa, and various detachments in Nova Scotia until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the RCMP Veterans Association and a Past Master of Poyntz Lodge No. 44 A.F. & A.M. Hantsport. Dale enjoyed his association with Eden Golf & Country Club, West Paradise and the many good times had with relatives and acquaintances during visits to his wife’s home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Dale had a truly genuine and contagious spirit and he made an instant and lasting impression on everyone fortunate to have met him. | 425 | Aubrey Gordon Harvey Age 90 of West Gore formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully at the QEII Hospital, Halifax on June 7th, 2021. Born on September 25th, 1930 in Rawdon Gold Mines, he was the eldest of 9 children to the late Seymour and Edna (Barron) Harvey. Aubrey had several jobs over the years but spent a total of 38 years working construction where he would later retire from in 1994. He was a lifetime member of the United Church. Aubrey and his wife Pauline spent many years enjoying music festivals with their camping buddies. Life slowed down in his latter years, spending more time at home with family and friends stopping in for a chuckle and catching up on the local news. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and enjoyed a game of crib or 45’s. Besides his parents Aubrey is predeceased by his first wife Maude (Hill), second wife Pauline (Sanford), daughter Elizabeth (Roulston), grandson Anthony Miller, siblings Ernest, Ed, Bobby, Russell, Hughie, Emhert and Cora (Ed). Mum passed away peacefully Friday, January 1, 2021 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, with family by her side. Born on November 3, 1931 in Windsor, to the late Morris and Frances (Swinamer) Harvey. Predeceased by brothers, Perley, Arnold, and Fred; sister, Gladys; and brothers-in-law, Lloyd Stuckey, John Macdonald, and Bernard Grant. Mum was a huge fan sitting in the grandstands at horse shows across Nova Scotia. She was often heard cheering her children and friends to victory. She enjoyed the competitions and the comradery with friends for many years. Mum and Dad enjoyed travelling together in their motor home. Their adventures took them as far West as Winnipeg, Man., and as far south as Florida, USA, with stops at many destinations along the way. They spent many fun-filled winters in Florida with friends old and new. Being die-hard Bluegrass fans, Mum and Dad attended festivals across the Maritime Provinces and North Eastern United States. They often hosted "Sunday morning big breakfast with floats". Friend ships made through these festivals have been many and ever-lasting. Born in Digby on June 7, 1937, and raised in Mahone Bay, Gaylan was the only child of the late Keith and Etoile Hiltz. Gaylan began her married life to husband Orren in Halifax, but they later settled in Hantsport to raise their family. Forever the caregiver, Gaylan’s heart was her family. She was a loving and devoted daughter, wife and mother, and was especially proud of being a grandmother and great-grandmother. | 428 | AULENBACK, Orren Howard It is with saddened hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Orren on Monday, June 17, 2019 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born and raised in Bridgewater, Orren was the youngest child of the late Reid and Beatrice (Wagner) Aulenback. Orren was a teen when he began his career as a hand-fed press operator at the Bridgewater Bulletin, the same place where he first saw the person who would become the love of his life, Gaylan. They married in 1958 and moved to Halifax, where he worked at various print shops around Halifax and Dartmouth. Together, Orren and Gaylan settled in Hantsport to raise their family in 1968. He began working at Acadia University and stood proudly in the University print shop for six years. As a master of his trade, Orren began teaching at Kingstec in 1974, inspiring a younger generation of Heidelburg press operators. Gone are the days of hand-set type and sadly, now we say good-bye. Orren was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His hobbies included teaching eager 16 year olds to drive safely and wood working in his basement workshop. Besides his parents, Orren was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Gaylan; brother, Willard and sister, Ruth Purnett. | 435 | Barbara Ann Rattew (Newcomb) passed away peacefully at Peter D. Clark Long Term Care Home in Ottawa, Ontario, on June 2, 2023. She was 88. Barbara loved dancing to her music, and cooking for and entertaining her family and friends. As a military wife, she had an interesting life, and travelled widely throughout Canada, the US, the UK and Europe. She was a wizard at making new houses into homes for her family when they moved to a new posting every few years. Barbara had a friendly, outgoing nature. She loved talking and joking with people. She was free with her compliments, including to complete strangers, especially on their outfits and hairstyles. Those who knew her say that she was a “real character”. She had a special place in her heart for dogs and small children, and these always brought her profound joy. She will be missed. Barbara’s family wishes to thank the staff of Peter D. Born in Banff, Scotland on September 25th, 1927, he was a son of the late George and Nellie (Goodfellow) Barbour. At the age of four, the family sailed on the S.S. Newfoundland to Pier 21 in Halifax. During his working years, Bill was an Edgerman for various lumber mills in the area. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Atkinson) in 2000; brother, Melvin Hughes and sister, Nora Rae. The family would like to thank Valley Regional Hospital and the staff of Evergreen Home for Special Care for all their love, care and support shown to Bill and family. Lois started her working life with Maritime Tel and Tel in Kentville and transferred to Halifax when she got married. | 440 | BARRETT, Fredrick Grenfell - 98, Cambridge Station, Kings Co., passed away peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, November 25, 2007. Born in Hantsport, April 14, 1909, he was a son of the late Rev. Fred Barrett and Rebecca (Dalrymple). Fred graduated from Mt. Allison University with a B.Ed. and later received an M.Sc. in Biology from Dalhousie University. For a number of years he taught at the Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro, and at various other locations throughout Nova Scotia. During the Second World War, he served in the RCAF (Flight Lt.) in Bournmouth, England, as a wireless instructor. On his return home he taught briefly at Cornwallis Military Base. He then worked with the Department of Health, Halifax, and as Director of Rehabilitation with the T.B. Association at the Nova Scotia Sanitarium in Kentville. He concluded his career years working in Adult Education in Bridgetown. Fred was an avid ham radio operator (VE1KR) and throughout his long life he was involved in many community organizations. His hobbies and interests are too numerous to mention. To the very end he showed an amazing zest for life and learning. Fred was well-known as "a people person" and a gentleman! Many will remember his strong handshake and kindness. He was predeceased by brother, Doug; sister, Elizabeth; wife, Eleanore (Lacey) and young son, Ricky. His body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 30, at 5:30 p.m. in Christian Reformed Church, 118 Oakdene Ave., Kentville.
