| 361 | Age 92, of Windsor, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 18, 2025 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Wolfville, March 22, 1933, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Mary (Hills) Carey. Merle attended Wolfville High School and Acadia University. He worked at C.K.F. as office manager and was a partner in a construction business, Wallace and Carey. He later went on to work for Minas Realty and then Brooklyn Insurance Agency, Windsor. He enjoyed playing baseball for the Hantsport Shamrocks from 1958-61 and was a member of the Maritime Champions in 1961. He also played hockey for the Wolfville Falcons, Digby Ravens and Windsor Maple Leafs, when they were Nova Scotia Champions in the late 50’s. He enjoyed coaching minor hockey in Windsor as well. Merle was a member of the Ken-Wo Golf Club with his wife, Joan and they enjoyed spending time together on the golf course. He also served as president of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre for a few years. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Joan; daughter, Renda VanderToorn and brother, Harry “Donnie” Carey. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, where the family will receive visitors from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, December 2. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 3 in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Jennifer Riley officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. A private interment will be held in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. | 362 | Aileen Winnifred “Winnie” Hartt, age 90 of Ellershouse, Hants County, passed away on Sunday, April 14th, 2013, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on February 18th, 1923, in Hantsport, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Adelia (Wile) Rafuse. Winnie was a member of the Upper Vaughan’s Baptist Church, Upper Vaughans. Besides her parents, Harry and Adelia (Wile) Rafuse; she was predeceased by her husband, Abner; sons, Lester, Reid, and Ronnie Hartt; granddaughters, Pauline, and Rhonda; grandson, Terry; brothers, Mark, and John; sister, Muriel DeWolfe. | 363 | Alan Rae DUNBAR — Gaspereau Age 66 of Gaspereau, passed away on February 23, 2024. He was born in Windsor, NS, on September 14, 1957 to the late Gerald and Margaret Dunbar. Alan grew up in Hants Border and went to sea for the first part of his career, working as a bosun on oil tankers. After meeting his wife, Carol (Peet), he came ashore and they spent the last 12 years working in Fort McMurray, AB. He retired to Nova Scotia in 2023 with plans to enjoy his family, and do some camping and hunting. In addition to his parents, Alan was predeceased by his stepson, Luke Durling. “Alan will be greatly missed by all.” Cremation has taken place, and as per his request, no service. | 364 | ALEXANDER (Armstrong), Carolyn Helene — 67, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born and raised in Liverpool, graduating from Liverpool Regional High School. She trained as a nurse at the Victoria General Hospital, Class of 65A, and recently enjoyed attending her 45th reunion. She practiced for two years in Neurosurgery at the VG before taking on the full-time role of mother. The devotion to her husband, children, friends and community was evident and performed with grace and great kindness. | 365 | ALEXANDER (Meagher), Theresa Ellen February 15, 1929- February 19, 2014. Our dearly loved mother passed away peacefully at home on February 19 after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband, David Joseph Alexander (d. June 24, 2004); her siblings and their spouses, Margaret Anne Lemieux (Paul), James Arthur Meagher (Joan), Patrick Joseph Meagher (Mildred \'Winnie\'), and Marie Frances Wright (Charles). The matriarch of our family, she was known in her youth as \'Minnie\' and she was an accomplished athlete. In her youth, she competed in swimming, tennis, and hockey, the latter for which she was inducted into the Windsor Birthplace of Hockey Hall of Fame. Later, she became an avid golfer and was an active member of the Ken-Wo Golf Club, New Minas. In keeping with her wishes, an Irish Wake will be hosted at her home, 220 Avon St., Hantsport today, Thursday, February 27 between 6-9 p.m. All friends and family are welcomed to come and celebrate her life. A funeral mass will be held in St. John The Evangelist Parish, 339 King St., Windsor on Friday, February 28 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow in the church hall. | 366 | Alfred Gardiner Mair It is with heavy hearts that the family of Alfred Gardiner Mair of Hantsport, announces his passing on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the age of 88. Alfred (known as “Alfie” to his friends), was born October 7, 1934 in the small fishing village of Portsoy, Scotland and was raised in Macduff and Aberdeen. He often reminisced about his childhood adventures such as swimming in the chilly waters of Macduff’s Tarlair Swimming Pool, and climbing cliffs to find bird’s eggs. At age 15, after finishing school, Alfred took on an apprenticeship as a Turner and Fitter at John M Henderson-Kings Works in Aberdeen where he learned how to manufacture and assemble industrial tools and machine components from metal, a skill that was helpful in his 45-year career in the merchant navy. He started as 7th engineer with Ben Line and worked his way up to chief engineer with a steam and motor ticket. He travelled the world on oil tankers and cargo vessels to the Far East, through the Panama Canal, to Australia and along coastal Europe and beyond. He told us a story of playing a soccer match with shipmates in Antarctica, while King penguins watched “along the sidelines” with fascination. It was on his travels to Hamburg, Germany, where he met his beloved wife of 65 years, Ingeborg (Frank). In 1972 Alfred emigrated with his family to Nova Scotia to join the Fundy Gypsum Company. He later worked in the Great Lakes, with Halco Co Ltd., Misener, Upper Lakes Shipping Co.; retiring at age 65 with Algoma. We will fondly remember Dad/Grampy for his Doric Scottish sayings, limericks, quick wit and his soft heart for the “little birdies” and nature. He had excellent hand eye coordination and was a “dab hand” at darts, pool and table tennis. He enjoyed his daily crossword and was an avid sports fan, who loved his “fitba” (soccer), golf, curling and his Blue Jays and Leafs. Freddy, as he was lovingly referred to by his siblings, was the youngest of the late Alexander and Catherine (Wood) Mair’s eight children: Alexander, Magnus, Isabella, Margaret, William, James and Irene. Cheerio… Alfred… Alfie… Dad… Uncle… Grampy. You will be greatly missed, but we will always hold you close, within our hearts. A graveside service will be held in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, at a later date. | 367 | ALICE WYMAN LOVE 1927 - 2020 Our Mom passed peacefully in her home at Staywell Manor, Calgary, Alberta, on October 10, 2020, following a battle with cancer. Alice was born in Bromptonville, Quebec, the third of four children, and grew up in Hantsport, Nova Scotia. In 1948, she graduated from Acadia University with a Degree in Biology and worked as a researcher with Nova Scotia Fisheries and then as a high school science teacher. After marrying, she moved to Calgary in 1951, where she lived for the remainder of her life with a one year sabbatical in London, England where she bravely learned to drive on the "wrong side of the road." Mom went back to school in the 1980s and completed a medical secretary's certificate and then worked as an assistant in her daughter Nancy's busy family medical practice for many years. She was known for the special care and attention she gave to each patient. Nancy would often joke that patients came to the office to see Alice rather than the doctor. First and foremost, Alice was a dedicated and loving mother. She was the rock at home and took great pride in her four children and their accomplishments. She especially loved her role as a Grandma and grew very close to all six grandchildren, including those in Europe, as trips to Switzerland were an annual event for Mom. In later years she was blessed with five great-grandchildren who provided her with joy and delight. Mom instilled in the family the importance of family bonds which we all cherish and this gave her comfort in her final days. She was very active in the Samaritan Club of Calgary for several decades. She was always willing to lend a hand and help others. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, sewing at Christmas time and knitting. Mom was known as a wonderful host and threw many beautiful dinner parties over the years. The words 'lovely', 'kind' and 'gracious' are often used to describe Alice. She had many close friends throughout her life and treasured those relationships. | 368 | ALLARD, William Thomas \'Bill\' Loving husband of Mary Louise, of South Napan Road, Miramichi, N.B., passed away peacefully at his residence, Miramichi Senior Citizen Home, on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the age of 69. Born in Windsor on October 8, 1948, he was a son of the late John Alfred and Dorothy Grace (Brown). He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth and brother, John. He served for 25 years in the Canadian military; during that time he deployed on multiple peacekeeping operations. After retirement from the military, Bill served with the Commissionaire Corp. Along with spending time with his family, Bill enjoyed playing darts and washer toss. Thank you to the staff at the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, the extra-mural nurses and Dr. Kris for providing excellent care. Bill rested in Maher’s Funeral Home, 35 University Ave. Visitation was held on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and no funeral service. | 369 | ALLEN (Sypher, Winchester), Yvonne Inez — 89, of Yarmouth, passed away suddenly on May 18, 2012, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in the picturesque village of Sandy Cove, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Scott and Inez (Manzer) Sypher. Yvonne’s greatest joy was her family and home, followed by dedication and faithfulness to Zion United Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities for over 50 years. She was a 40-year member of Opal Rebekah Lodge No. 45, having served as Chaplain, Post Noble Grand and past District Deputy President. Yvonne was involved for many years with the Canadian Cancer Society, serving as President for five of those years. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, travelling, playing bridge and visiting with the elderly. She was predeceased by first husband, Carl F. Winchester; second husband, Merle B. Born in Avonport on March 10, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Orlo and Jennie (Redmond) Anderson.Jean always enjoyed politics and bled "Tory Blue". She was the type of person who could always strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, about anything. Jean loved her Tim Hortons and made many friendships while going there. She was an avid Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Blue Jays fan. She and her late husband Gerald, volunteered at the local nursing homes and they always enjoyed their trips to Stacey’s Jamboree. Jean was very dedicated to her family and always loved listening to all their stories. Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her step-mother, Grace (Byron) Morine; her husband, Gerald L. Allen (1998); brother, George Buchanan; brothers-in-law, Dale Forsythe and George Eastman. In his younger years, Dale was an avid hockey player and later enjoyed watching his sons excel as they learned to play the game. Dale’s first love was horses and he enjoyed going for long walks in the woods and looking at nature’s beauty. He took great pleasure in just spending quiet times with his wife, reading or just talking. Dale took great pride in his sons and his grandchildren. Lane Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Ella was a daughter of the late Fred and Harriett (Borden) Strong. She was born April 6, 1916 in Lockhartville, Kings Co. and grew up in Mount Denson. In 1935, she married William \'Bill\' Alley. They lived in Lockhartville, and then Hants Border. In 1988, after Bill’s death in 1987, she moved to Dartmouth to live with her daughter. Later they moved to Bedford. She was a member of Hantsport Baptist Church, the choir and King’s Daughters Class. Ella was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by the love of her life, William Stockwell Alley; son, Edward; sisters, Beulah (in infancy), Hilda and Harriett; brothers, Bowman, Paul, Clifton and Moston. | 378 | Alphonse Martin "Al, Fonce" GILLIS — Mount Denson Age 97, of Mount Denson, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Friday, November 18, 2022 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born on August 28, 1925 in Grand Mira North, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Martin and Catherine (Campbell) Gillis. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas. He was a mechanic by trade and made the most of his off time and retirement. His first priority was his family, He was always happiest when surrounded by family and friends, especially if music was involved. He enjoyed fishing and hunting at the camp in Burnt Lake (oh, if those walls could talk!), it was one of his happy places. He and Mom were avid campers and members of the Autumn Leaves group of the Family Camping and Hiking Association. His other happy place was the cottage in Grand Mira North. He and Mom and later he and Joan, spent many happy hours there. At the cottage he enjoyed playing cards, enjoying the company of those who dropped by, especially his nieces and nephews or just sitting and watching the river. It wasn’t uncommon for an impromptu kitchen Cèilidh to occur there. Dad was a remarkable man who could do anything he set his mind to. At age 65, he took up fiddle lessons and played with the Cèilidh Fiddlers. He was also an avid quilt-maker spending many hours during the long winter days working on them, especially after mom's passing. Many family and friends have one of his quilts to keep them warm at night. Dad was community-minded and was active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hantsport, the Community Hall in Mount Denson and was a member of the Hantsport and District Lions Club. He and Mom taught us by example to give back to the community. Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn “Snooks” (Faulkner); and special friend, Joan Starrett; brothers, Joseph, Dan (Maryanne), John Alex, Allen, Lawrence and Bernard (Mary); sisters, Lucy, Anne Pitre (Bill), Florence Presseau (Armand), Mary, Clara Murphy (Harry) and Sister Josephine, CND. The family wishes to thank the staff on the Blenkhorn unit, Dykeland Lodge for the care, compassion and hugs they gave Dad while he was a resident there. You were all his “favourite”. | 382 | Alton Basil DEMINGS — New Minas Age 92, of New Minas, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Guy and Hattie (Stonehouse) Demings. In his earlier years, Alton was employed with Minas Basin Pulp and Power and on the gypsum boats for many years. He later worked with Mitchell’s Plumbing and Heating and retired from Scotian Gold. He especially enjoyed spending time at the camp and the blueberry fields in Millvale and doing jigsaw puzzles. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Beryl Chipman, Evelyn (Robert) Walsh, Shirley Starratt, Dorothy Porter; brothers, Ronald, in infancy, Carl (Jean) and Fraser. Gordon worked 25 years for the Bank of Montreal, serving in Curling, Corner Brook, Botwood and St. John’s, N.L., Moncton, N.B., and Halifax. He enjoyed a second career with Modern Paving in St. John’s, N.L., before retiring to Hantsport. He was an active member and contributor to Avon United Church, Hantsport. He will be remembered for his gregarious laugh and participation in community activities, especially cards. She was born on September 3rd, 1920 in Hantsport to Morey and Walter Comstock. Following school Kay moved to Halifax and obtained her RN from the Children's Hospital. She married Dr. Thomas Anderson and they had two daughters - Barbara and Joan. Kay was an avid gardener and spent many hours tending to her beautiful gardens. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed traveling. Kay enjoyed playing golf and played into her eighties. Her passion was the growing of African violets for show purposes. For many years, Kay's home-grown flowers won first prize in numerous categories at the annual Halifax African Violet Show. A Life Membership in the First Halifax African Violet Society was bestowed on Kay in 2006. She was also awarded an Honorary Award by the African Violet Society of Canada for 'Outstanding Service to the Object of the Society'. Kay was a kind and generous individual who gave to many charities. She valued her many friendships. She was very proud of her daughters and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; brother, George and sister, Ruby (Wyman). Sincere thanks go to the Newfoundland ladies, Bernice and Ann, for the care given to Kay at home and to the dedicated staff of Shannex's Drummond and especially Glasgow Hall. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, September 24 in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 25 in the J.A. Snow Memorial Chapel. | 388 | ANDRESEN, Ivar Adelsten — April 19, 1928 - March 30, 2012. It is with great sadness that the Andresen family advises of the sudden but peaceful passing of Ivar Adelsten Andresen. Ivar moved to Canada from Norway when he was 18 years old. He learned english and put himself through university earning a degree in Engineering. While in Montreal, he met and married his life partner Geraldine McMurray. Together they raised eight children. He spent most of his career with CIL, managing the building of many of their plants all over Canada. His final move was to Toronto where he eventually retired. | 389 | Andrew Douglas Smith, 52 of Mount Denson, passed away on March 11, 2021 in his home. Born in Windsor, he was the son of Sylvia (Walsh) and the late James Smith. Andrew attended Land Mark East and after graduation, he gained employment with Quinns Flooring before he branched out on his own, creating Smith Flooring. He was an active man who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and his beloved Marlene. He also enjoyed the time spent just hanging out with the shore boys and going on ski-doo trips. As well, he appreciated every chance he could take his ‘68 Chevelle out on the open road. | 390 | Anna Marie Mosher (Rehberg) April 1st 1958 - November 16th 2022 It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart to announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, and wife, Anna Marie Mosher (Rehberg). Who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 16,2022 Anna grew up in Hants County. She worked for Lawtons Drugs for many years and then for The Windsor Elms Village for over 20 years until she retired in 2019. Everyone will always remember Anna's spunk and charisma. She brought joy to those around her everyday, especially during the holidays with her exquisite knack for decor. Decorating her home brought her tremendous joy and she also made her unit at The Elms feel like home with all her talent for the residents and staff. In the years between these two places of work she took a part time position with Anne and Graham Day of Hantsport. She kept this position up until she was physically no longer able to maintain it. She did this because Anne and Graham became fast friends that turned into family. Anna was known for her large family that she loved even more than its size. To Anna, family didn't have to be blood she loved with her whole heart regardless of traditionalism. She was loyal to a fault at times and would help anyone in need. She was selfless in nature and this is the quality that drew her soulmate Ron Mosher to her. For 23 years they built a happy home and life together in Hantsport. In Anna's free time you could find her playing Bingo, cards, and bargaining for a deal at a local yard sale. Her favourite activity was the family camping trips that were taken every year, her grandchildren will forever remember all the fun she would bring to them. Anna is predeceased by her mother, Mary Jean and father, Gregory; sister Marlene; brother Granville Rehberg; brother-in-law Rick Sargent; and nephew Jason Waddell. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, November 21st from 6-8 p.m. in the Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0. | 392 | Anthony David \"Tony\" Blue – 47, of New Minas, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Wendy Dorothy (Little) Blue, Hantsport and the late Alexander David \"Dave\" Blue. In his younger years, Tony took great pride in playing basketball and soccer, playing for the Hantsport Hawks up until the time he graduated and attended Horton District High School. He then played soccer for the Horton Griffins for a year before going to UCCB and playing for them. He played many sports up until his children came along. They are quite possibly his greatest achievement. He was so proud of them as they grew up into two amazing young adults. In recent years, Tony got back into soccer, playing with Paddy’s Pub Soccer Club and renewing old friendships and making new ones. He also enjoyed, throughout the years, playing softball with the Webster’s Misfits and making friendships on that team to last a lifetime. He had been employed as a Produce Specialist with Sobeys Inc. in Windsor prior to working with Crown Fibre Tube, Kentville. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brother, Marc.
