With sadness, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Bill, age 87, in the Veterans’ Wing of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Bill was a truly gentle man, happy to be with his family and friends. He loved playing the bagpipes, marched in many parades and ceremonies and was highly respected by the members of his band. Bill was a son of Milton Edgar and Pearl (Drolet) Welt. He grew up in the mining town of Schumacher near Timmins, Ont. and took his schooling there. In 1942 he joined the Army, coming to Wolfville, where he took the Officer’s Training Course at Acadia University. | 1727 | Wendy Marie (nee Francis) Rafuse … It is with profound sadness that we announce Wendy’s peaceful passing on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at her home on the Glooscap First Nation, Bishopville. Born in Halifax on July 3, 1956, she was a daughter of Bill and Neta (nee Tupper) Francis. Wendy was a loving wife and a caring mother and grandmother. Her devotion to the people she loved was obvious to all who knew her. She was quick to laugh and enjoyed telling stories of her experiences, both past and present. Wendy was a strong, proud woman who was never heard to complain and was always ready to assist others. The love of her dog, Tee and of nature, especially watching the birds that she so diligently fed, various crafts and “shopping for sales” were a source of everyday enjoyment for Wendy. Her best friend and life partner, Vincent Martin was always with her and together, they enjoyed every day to the fullest. She leaves memories that will never fade. Her passing leaves a sadness that can only be relieved in knowing that she is now resting peacefully in God’s care. Mildred and Gerald did their fair share of travel to England, Germany, New York and went on several cruise ships. They wintered in Largo, Fla. for 24 seasons where they formed incredible bonds of friendship with again much good food and laughter. | 1731 | WEST, Stephen Franklyn It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Stephen Franklyn West, on November 28, 2021. Stephen was born in Halifax on October 10, 1951, to Gerald and Mildred (Crewe) West. Though the West boys were all born in Halifax, they moved to Lockhartville when they were very young. Stephen loved his family, his friends, music and the sea. His love of music was lifelong, he played various instruments, but his instrument of choice was the clawhammer banjo. He played in many bands and entertained at festivals, pubs and music venues. He had a large family of musical and music loving friends, who will miss him dearly. As much as Stephen loved music, he had an equal love of the sea. Most of the warmer months, you would find Stephen and Joann on their boat, “Trinity”, sailing to islands and locations on the South Shore with friends and family. A day on the ocean with Stephen and Joann was always so much fun. Stephen had a long career in oil exploration, in directional drilling, which took him to many countries all over the world. He always claimed that his favorite country was Vietnam while his least favorite was Angola, where he had to exit quickly amid a military coup and the Ebola virus. His travels and work stories were always wonderful, fun and sometimes terrifying to listen to. Stephen also had a pilot’s license, he and his father shared a love of flying and there were a select few who were actually brave enough to go up with them. If Stephen taught us anything, it is to do what you love, follow your passion, live life to the fullest. He did that every day. Stephen loved his family enormously. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Gerald; and his brother, Michael. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Mahone Islands Conservation Association. | West, Stephen Franklyn (I2193)

| 1747 | With broken hearts, we suddenly had to say good-bye to Dad in the early morning of Monday, September 23, 2024 at Dykeland Lodge in Windsor. 85 years ago, he was born just minutes after his twin brother, Joe on August 24, 1939 to Andries Frans Joseph and Philomena May (Schump) Hoogerwerf in St. Peters, Cape Breton and spent much of his young life growing up in beautiful Port George. with his parents, three sisters, and brother. After leaving Port George and embarking on a few adventures, Dad came to call Hantsport home by 1968 where he found work first at CKF (Canadian Keyes Fibre), then took on a successful carpentry career, and finally completed work life with Shirley once they retired from ownership and management of Uncle John’s store in Hantsport in the early 2000s. Dad has left behind a legacy in the love and pride he had for us kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We never had a doubt that we were the most important people in his life and how happy it made him to simply be together with us. He was predeceased by his parents, Andries and Philomena Hoogerwerf; twin brother, Johannes ‘Joe’ Hoogerwerf; sisters, Magdalena ‘Babe’ Rayfuse and Nellie Hiltz; as well as his beloved wife, Shirley. Dad loved life, especially the people in it as family and friends brought him true joy and meaning, even when he lost a game of crib to them, or the Blue Jays were on a losing streak. He was so easy to love and asked for little himself. Instead he tried through humour, music, compassion, connection, generosity, and maybe a toddy or two to make the lives of others better. He touched the hearts of many and will be dearly missed. We would like to sincerely thank the incredibly compassionate staff at Dykeland in Windsor for openly welcoming our father to the Lodge and for taking such great care of him over the past few years. Also, the love and support that you have shown us as a family while he lived there as well as during this difficult time is recognised and so very much appreciated. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). On Saturday, October 12, 2024, we will be honouring Dad’s wishes and “sprinkling him” so that he is reunited with Shirley and his brother Joe, as well as enjoying the view in Port George. Following this family time, we will be on the top floor of the Royal Canadian Legion - Wolfville Branch 74, 310 Main St, Wolfville, NS B4P 1C4, from 3 – 5 p.m. that same day to welcome friends as we give thanks and raise a glass to toast and celebrate our wonderful father. Happy trails, Dad! | Hoogerwerf, John Thomas (I11226)

| 1750 | With heavy hearts the family of Wanda Johnston, 65 of Bishopville, share the passing of a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. On March 13, 2022, she passed away peacefully in her home ‘on the hill’. Wanda was the proud daughter of Gladys (Atwell) and the late Roy Miner. In addition to her father, Wanda was predeceased by the love of her life, Shannon Johnston. Wanda began her early career in radio at AVR. She later worked in local schools as an educational assistant where she exemplified her passion for helping others. After spending a number of years at home raising her children and grandchildren, Wanda ventured to Nunavut. She cherished her time in Iqaluit working in hospitality and schools before joining the airline industry. She fell in love with The North and the many friends she and her husband, Shannon, met there. Her love of animals began at an early age and is one of the many gifts she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She always had a pet or two or more, but she was most excited to bring her dream to life of owning her own small farm on the family homestead on the hill. It was here on the family farm that she passed on the knowledge and love especially of horses that she had learned from her dad and special aunt, Pearl Myles. Although the farm grew quiet in the recent year it was a wonderful home for many four-legged family members over the years. She will be dearly missed by her little buddy Fern. Wanda enjoyed a good cup of coffee or tea with great company, many friends and family have enjoyed many cups with good conversation over the years. She found great joy preparing a meal for her loved ones. Among so many things her famous carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies will be dearly missed by many. A Graveside Service will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Life Gathering for friends and family will held on April 15, 2022 at 2:00 at 1802 Bishopville Rd. | 1755 | With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Andrea Beryl Porter Stevens, our irreplaceable mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She left us peacefully on Monday, June 10th, at her home in Hantsport, surrounded by family and friends, at the age of 73. Andrea was born six weeks premature (shortly after an ill-advised bumpy-country-road trip to Pugwash Point), on August 18th, 1950 in Windsor, to Don and Dorothy (Demings) Porter of Hantsport. She grew up in Hantsport on Maple Ave, and her community and its people always held a central place in her life - especially her core group of chosen sisters: Linda, Josie, Audrey, Debbie, Lilla, and her life-long penfriend, Lois. Throughout her entire life, everywhere she ever went, she collected friends - she just loved people. Whether during her twenty-seven year career at Scotiabank and Symcor, or running around the province in summer co-raising kids with the other baseball wives, her ability to form, build on, and sustain relationships across decades was one of her super-powers. Her friends were her wealth, and she was truly rich. She loved her family fiercely and revelled in family time together - especially at home in Hantsport and at Pugwash Point. It was people, and especially her family and friends that really filled her up, and her glass (in her own words) was perpetually half-full, right up to the end. She leaves behind her an abundance of family and friends who simply adored her. She was predeceased by her parents, and brother, Cameron. Radiant and smiling until the very end, in her family’s eyes, she was the most stupendous of mothers; the most magical of humans. She taught us all what she saw as the pillars of a life well-lived: Family, Love, Friends, Hugs, Kindness, and Hope. She has always been our centre, our lynchpin, our lodestar, and the hole she leaves in our midst will never be filled. In our hearts we will always remember and honour her. She will live on in the memories of her family, in the laughter and embraces shared between her friends and cousins, in the songs sung around campfires at the Point, and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing what it felt like to be hugged by her. A celebration of life will be held at Riverbank Cemetery in Hantsport on Saturday, July 13, beginning at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Andrea to the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre (HMCC), Arthritis Society Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, or the Nova Scotia SPCA. | Porter, Andrea Beryl (I963)

| 1756 | With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Kenneth M. Mounce, who departed peacefully on November 17, 2025, at the age of 91. Independent and vibrant to the end, Dad's story is one defined by his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and the province he loved. Ken was the youngest son of the late Fred G. and Hilda (DeMont). His life was anchored by his soulmate and forever friend of 64 years, his wife Patricia A. (Robinson), who predeceased him, as did his siblings Winnifred, Wanda, and Fred. Ken's roots were set early in Windsor, where his education at Windsor Academy and later in Commerce at Dalhousie University laid the groundwork for a life of service. His leadership potential shone brightly through activities like the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where he toured the UK, and his presidency of both the Commerce Society and the Dalhousie Society of Students. While at Dal, he began instructing phys-ed at the Halifax School for the Blind. His two summers as Camp Director at Rainbow Haven were particularly significant, as it was there that he and Pat—whom he already knew—began to truly notice each other and form a deeper connection. His dynamic professional career began in 1962, initially flourishing in the private sector with the Centennial Group, where he served as General Manager of Paragon Management, specializing in property management in the Maritimes. Ken’s career soon transitioned to the public sector, where he dedicated decades to shaping Nova Scotia. In 1975, he was appointed to establish and Chair the Rent Review Commission as part of the Federal-Provincial Anti-Inflation Program. This led to his appointment in 1977 as Atlantic Canada's first Deputy Minister of Consumer Affairs, followed by a tenure as Head of the Nova Scotia Housing Commission. He was named Deputy Minister of Tourism in 1980, a period highlighted by the organization of the first Parade of Sail (Tall Ships) in Halifax in 1984, during which time he also acted as Interim President of the Waterfront Development Corporation. Following this, he was named President and CEO of Trade Centre in 1985, where he oversaw the Halifax Metro Centre and contributed to the establishment of the first Convention Centre, World Trade Centre, and Argyle Office Tower Complex. Beyond his official duties, Ken was a tireless community builder. He was a Charter Member of the Halifax Progress Club, National President (1975), and later National Hall of Fame inductee (1996). It was an organization where he made lifelong friends and championed projects like the Kings Meadow Residence. His commitment extended to co-founding Landmark East School in Wolfville and serving as a longtime director of the Royal International Tattoo. Ken’s historical interests were evident in his work as Chair of the Halifax Citadel Changing of the Guard 100th Anniversary celebration, President of the Avon River Heritage Society, and trustee of Windsor United Church. He received the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal in 2017 for his service. Even after a brief retirement, his passion for the province led him back to become President of the Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Club. Both he and Pat felt privileged to be part of the Mooseheads family, especially hosting the Memorial Cup in 2000. Dad’s love for Nova Scotia was profound—though born in Sarnia, his pride was inherent. He famously carried Nova Scotia Flag lapel pins in his pockets to distribute to anyone new to the province. He enjoyed reciting and presenting visitors with an official “Order of Good Cheer” history lesson and document. His personal touch was legendary: Ken was known for his genuine interest in "your" story, coupled with sincere, often humorous, handwritten notes of acknowledgement or thanks. This ability to connect deeply made him not only a great leader but also forged friendships that endure to this day. Ken was a keen gardener, a history buff (particularly family genealogy), and enjoyed a wide range of music. While his affection for the Toronto Maple Leafs waned, it was quickly and completely replaced by his devotion to the Mooseheads. At the core of his life was Avonfield Farms in Newport Landing, a place he purchased due to his interest in family history and genealogy. More than just a home, it was the sanctuary he and Pat created for their family and friends—the beloved gathering place for holidays, birthdays, and most particularly, for hosting their grandchildren. Dad and Mom together created and instilled the value of family, a legacy that will continue through the generations. A service will be held at Windsor United Church at 2 pm on Saturday December 13th, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Landmark East School or the Canadian Progress Club Halifax. | Mounce, Kenneth M. (I16154)
