After graduating from Horton High School, Audrey enrolled in the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. She enjoyed cooking everything from delicious main courses to scrumptious desserts. Her many interests also included making quilts (one of which now keeps her mother warm at night) and latch hooking. She was a member of Hantsport Baptist Church and along with her brother, Bill, sang in the choir.

1685 Wanda Faye Zwicker

Age 74, of Hantsport, passed away at home on Friday, January 10, 2025. Born in Windsor on July 24, 1950, she was the only daughter of the late Vic and Jean (Boyd) Starratt.

In her own words, Mom was most grateful for her faith in God, her children and grandchildren and her family and friends. Mom was the keeper of memories and we were in constant awe of the details she could remember. She told many stories from her youth, including fun times at Grammie and Grampie Boyd’s house, being flower girl at Lawrence and Janet’s wedding and that one attempt at skipping school, thinking that her mother wouldn’t find out. Mom loved to talk and she valued her chats with family and friends. Every phone call was great company for her, especially if you had a story or a laugh to share. The entire town became part of her family as she shared photos of the grandchildren to everyone from the post office to the Credit Union and finishing the loop at the grocery store. There was no doubt to anyone who knew her how proud she was of her family.

Mom had an incredibly kind and generous group of friends who she adored. She couldn’t wait for Sundays to work with Mary and Laura and her phone calls and visits with her neighbour, Myrna, meant the world to her. Mom’s greatest passion was her knitting – her famous dishcloth sets. She would curl up at the end of the couch working on a set while watching her true crime shows. If you were the recipient of one of these sets, you knew it was made from love. Mom was a devote Catholic and was proud to have helped to look after St. Mary’s Church in Hantsport. Every single night, she prayed for the sick, the suffering and for God’s will to be done. And then she prayed for those on her extensive prayer list. She was always so touched when someone would ask if a loved one could be added to her list. Mom will be greatly missed because there was no human with a kinder heart.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 18 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 339 King St., Windsor, Father John MacPherson officiating. A reception will be held in the church basement with interment to follow in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Donations in memory of Wanda may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Box 245, Halifax, NS B3J 3R4, a local Food Bank or a charity close to one’s heart.

1688 Wayne Edward SHANO — Hantsport

Passed away in QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax on Friday, January 7, 2022 with his loved ones holding his hands. He was such a brave fighter who wanted to come home but diabetes, heart and kidneys said no. Wayne had an incredible zest for life; he lived big and he appreciated every precious day he was given. He was a proud North-end boy who always loved to drive through his part of the city and reminisce about younger days and all the wonderful adventures he’d had, especially with his brother Brian. He was a ‘child at heart’ exploring toy stores and hobby stores and in his later years experienced the joy of model trains. He was a respected employee of Oland’s Brewery for 33 years; working at the Brewery was a family affair as both his dad, Bert, his brother Brian and his daughter Kathy worked there too. How he loved to play on the Oland’s baseball and hockey teams! Wayne was a proud dad whose dear daughter Kathy inherited not only his love of shopping but also of travel. They went to Disneyland, skied at Sugar Loaf and Smuggler’s Notch and enjoyed many rides in his prized mustard yellow MG Midget. He was an animal lover and a lover of dogs; he appreciated their unconditional love and companionship. Our dog Chester is lost without him. Wayne really liked to ‘stir the pot’, both in the kitchen and in conversation. In the kitchen he loved to cook and bake; he was our master chef- from BBQ whiskey sauce, homemade breads, cheese cakes and pumpkin pie with a hint of rum. And then there were conversations, especially with his good buddy, Roy when talking politics. He had a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. I could have written a book! Wayne and his sweetheart Susan made many incredible memories in their 25 years together. We worked on our ‘bucket list’ and did a good job of it, trips across the Pond, concerts and more concerts and especially crashing the Royal Wedding of Will and Kate. Wayne was the love of my life and I was his! Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Thelma (Robar) and Bert Shano; his brothers, Brian Shano and Jackie Robar. A heartfelt thank you to the VON staff that cared for Wayne with compassion and kindness, it was much appreciated; also, our most thankful respect and appreciation for the doctors and nurses of the Heart Function clinic, the Leg and Ulcer clinic and the Cardiac Care unit of the QEII. Special thanks to retired Dr. Frank Lo and Dr. Michael Diab; you’re the best!! In keeping with Wayne’s wishes cremation has taken place. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Children’s Wish Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

1690 We are extremely sad to announce the passing of Kenny Boyd at his daughter’s home in Poplar Grove on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at the age 74. Kenny was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and true friend to many. Born November 30, 1948, he was a son of the late John and Florence (MacDonald) Boyd.

Kenny grew up in and was a longtime resident of Falmouth. As a young man, he ventured out west and was a member of the Armed Forces for several years, participating in the 1970 Montreal “October Crisis”. Kenny also excelled as a hockey player at this time. Throughout his life he was a hard worker in whatever he pursued. In addition to being a woodsman for many years, he also worked on ranches, orchards and as a pipeline labourer.

Kenny was well known to his friends as "KB". He was very generous, softhearted and always had a kind word or a smile for whoever needed it. 1691 We are heartbroken to announce the loss of David Barry Jones who passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on September 21, 2025, at the age of 79.

David left a profound and lasting impression on those who were fortunate enough to be close to him. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter Krista, mother Joan, father Tom, as well as his brother Ken.

David was born on March 30, 1946 in Windsor, Nova Scotia to Thomas and Joan Jones. David graduated from Bridgetown High School, earned his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education from Acadia University (1967 & 1968), Master of Education from University of British Columbia, Master of Arts in School Psychology at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU), and studies in Faculty of Educational Theory at the University of Toronto. He had a long history of employment beginning with guidance coordination for Alberta Newstart Inc., served many years as a school psychologist for Northside Victoria Amalgamated School Board and, more recently for Chignecto Central Regional Center of Education. He also served as adjunct lecturer in Psychology for Cape Breton University and later for MSVU.

David (AKA “Dave”, “Dad”, and “Grampy”) was a strong life force. His life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and value-driven pursuits. He devoted his career as a school psychologist to helping children – guiding them through educational challenges and personal tragedy. He had a gift for listening, finding the right words that helped children and families to overcome and thrive.

His life-long love of sports was evident from a young age extending through high school and university with involvement in basketball, volleyball, and track as well as through his commitment to coaching basketball and volleyball at the middle, high school, and university levels. His athletic talents were recognized through induction into both the Bridgetown Sports Hall of Fame and Acadia University Sports Hall of Fame. He believed that sports were classrooms of their own, where lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and resilience shaped character for life.

He created a childhood for his children that was rich with memory and magic. Woven throughout, there were long drives to the Annapolis Valley with arms outstretched through the open windows enjoying the warm breeze while playing “I spy”, outings to the beach exploring and playing frisbee and catch, and family dinners where conversation, love, and laughter flowed in equal measure. His mischievous sense of humor - filled with pranks and timeless potty jokes - was a reminder that he never let go of his inner child. This playful spirit was carried into his role as “Grampy”. His grandchildren adored him for his ability to dive headfirst into their worlds sparking epic rounds of hide and seek, weaving imaginative stories, and creating grand adventures that will live on in their hearts and minds.

David was a man of sharp intellect and curiosity. He approached problems with a blend of logic, creativity, and insight that made him both a trusted guide and inspiring role model. Later in life he channelled his keen mind and love of storytelling into writing. A lifelong reader and thinker, he authored two crime fiction novels - weaving together suspense, wit, and a deep understanding of human nature. His writing reflected not only his intellect, but also his understanding of the complexities of people and the choices they make.

David leaves us with the warmth of unflinching love, wisdom, moral clarity, humor, and direction. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will continue to guide us. His children and grandchildren will embody his best qualities, honoring him through the lives they live.

Dad, we will all be watching for Bluejays.

In keeping with David’s wishes, a celebration of his journey will be held for close family and friends later.

If so moved, donations may be made to a charity that would honor his memory. The family would like to thank all the doctors and caregivers involved in his battle with cancer for their support.

1693 We are sad to announce that Wendell Holmes Jeffrey, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2018, in the Veterans Unit, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in picturesque Sandy Cove, Digby County, on December 22,1921, Wendell was the second eldest of eight children. His father, Floyd Vertal, made a modest living from the sea and the land and his mother, Margaret Elizabeth (Holmes), was a teacher and organist at the local Baptist church. After graduating from Normal College, he taught in a one room school in Great Village, Nova Scotia prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. He then served his country in the RCAF during the war, and later attended Dalhousie University with the assistance of the Royal Canadian Air Force Benevolent Fund earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Subsequently, he was accepted into the Dalhousie Medical School and graduated as Doctor of Medicine serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Core as a commissioned officer during that time. He brought his young family to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, in 1953, practising medicine with great dedication, skill and compassion until his retirement. He is fondly remembered by his patients, physician colleagues, nursing staff and other health care workers. With original partner Dr. D.R. Campbell, he established the Shelburne Medical Group, one of the first group family medical centres in Nova Scotia, providing uninterrupted comprehensive medical care to the community, encompassing general medicine, obstetrics, anesthesia and surgical assistance. Despite a very busy medical practise, he was a dedicated and much loved father and husband and became the ultimate Pater Familias to his children and his grandchildren after the death of our mother, Marjorie and subsequently to his great grandchildren, never forgetting birthdays and special occasions. He also contributed to his community in other ways, serving on Shelburne Town Council and as president of the Shelburne Kiwanis Club, and was a founding member of the Shelburne County Golf and Country Club (now River Hills Golf Club). 1694 We are sad to announce the passing of Lorna Blanche Jenkins on March 16, 2021 at the age of 87. Born on June 13th, 1933, in Hantsport, NS, to Burton Cameron and Annie Kathleen (Whitman) Yeaton,

Lorna grew up in a large family and, following the early death of her father, her mother became the sole parent of seven. The Yeaton children developed strong bonds as they learned to support each other from an early age. Among those cherished bonds that have endured a lifetime, the ones with her only sister and with her twin brother were always special. Lorna has recently written a book in memory and celebration of the seven siblings. She is predeceased by her brothers Russell (Mabel) and Jack (Lily).

She was the wife of the late Bernard Cecil Jenkins.

Lorna graduated from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College in Truro. It was there that she met Bernard. Over the years, they moved many times with their young family, finally ending up in Labrador City. In 2000, they returned to Nova Scotia where they built a home in Antigonish to be closer to family.

Daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend, teacher, aunt, in-law, mother, businesswoman, grandmother, critic, and mentor: Lorna wore all these mantles with calm and grace. She was a masterful sewer and a reluctant but proficient knitter who was always willing to share her skills. Her quiet, steady presence was a boon to Deborah as she started her creative business.

Lorna wasn’t a huge fan of playing sports but a poetically excellent triple toe triple lutz or a hole-in-one would bring a tear to her eye and her hands to her mouth as she slowly crept to the edge of her seat. She was a wonderful cook, for whom cake was the pinnacle of culinary excellence, closely followed by the egg roll. Lorna threw herself into social events, as happy to entertain as to be a guest.

In retirement she and her sister travelled far and wide, often accompanied by other family members on trips where laughter and camaraderie were given free rein.

Lorna cared for her family with deep and abiding love. Her family, her friends and her beloved cat, Spike, all knew the value of this extraordinary gift.

A Celebration Of Her Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Martha’s Hospital Palliative Care, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Red Cross Antigonish.
Yeaton, Lorna Blanche (I2415)

1698 WEBSTER (Bishop), Myrna Clare
Age 92, of Port Williams, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016, in Shannex-Blomidon Court, Greenwich. Born in Bishopville on June 21, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Lola (Coldwell) Bishop. The youngest of six children, she began her married life with Earle Webster in 1942. For 18 years they raised their family and built a successful farm in Port Williams. In November 1960 the unthinkable happened, her husband Earle passed away and Myrna was left with a farm to manage on her own plus five children ages 17 to the youngest, a baby born a week later. Her strength and determination never ceased to amaze. Her priority was always her kids, and with the help of family through the 1960’s she kept the farm going by making sure the work always got done. She took in school boarders and even provided a home for troubled children for many years. She worked incredibly hard doing whatever she could, back in the days of no modern conveniences. In 1970 she married her second husband, Gordon, only to be on her own again two years later when he passed away. Again she carried on by working off the farm to earn an income. Her homemade apple pies and bread were legendary. It was almost magical how quickly she could make an apple pie for desert and have it perfect every time. At the end of her life when she battled Alzheimer’s she always knew her kids. She was a fighter to the end. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by sisters, Norine Ross and Nita Munden; brothers, Harold, Harvey and Ernie. 1704 WELT, William Edgar — Of Greenwich, Kings Co. With sadness, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Bill, age 87, in the Veterans’ Wing of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Bill was a truly gentle man, happy to be with his family and friends. He loved playing the bagpipes, marched in many parades and ceremonies and was highly respected by the members of his band. Bill was a son of Milton Edgar and Pearl (Drolet) Welt. He grew up in the mining town of Schumacher near Timmins, Ont. and took his schooling there. In 1942 he joined the Army, coming to Wolfville, where he took the Officer’s Training Course at Acadia University. He went overseas in 1943, joined the North West Novas and fought in Holland and Belgium until the end of the Second World War. He played the drums in the Victory Parade in Brussels and Amsterdam. Bill started work in engineering/designing with the Ontario Department of Highways in Toronto and later was transferred to Albuquerque, N.M., and finally settled in Tucson, Ariz. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty, of 50 years. For several years, with his second wife, Margaret Forsyth Welt, he spent six winter months in Tucson and six summer months in Nova Scotia, and joined friends in bagpipe bands in both places. In 2007, he settled on the farm in Greenwich, and treasured the longtime friendships made with the CAUC (Canadian Army University Course) and his family here. Funeral service will be held in Greenwich United Church on Tuesday, November 22, at 3 p.m. with reception to follow in the church; Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt will officiate. Welt, William Edgar (I14704)

1705 Wendy Marie (nee Francis) Rafuse … It is with profound sadness that we announce Wendy’s peaceful passing on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at her home on the Glooscap First Nation, Bishopville. Born in Halifax on July 3, 1956, she was a daughter of Bill and Neta (nee Tupper) Francis. Wendy was a loving wife and a caring mother and grandmother. Her devotion to the people she loved was obvious to all who knew her. She was quick to laugh and enjoyed telling stories of her experiences, both past and present. Wendy was a strong, proud woman who was never heard to complain and was always ready to assist others. The love of her dog, Tee and of nature, especially watching the birds that she so diligently fed, various crafts and “shopping for sales” were a source of everyday enjoyment for Wendy. Her best friend and life partner, Vincent Martin was always with her and together, they enjoyed every day to the fullest. She leaves memories that will never fade. Her passing leaves a sadness that can only be relieved in knowing that she is now resting peacefully in God’s care. She was predeceased by her father, Bill and step-mother, Jessie, both in 2002; her twin granddaughters, Taylor and Taryn Rafuse in 2006. She was also predeceased by her maternal and paternal grandparents. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009 in St. Joseph’s Chapel, Glooscap First Nation, Bishopville, Father Craig Christianson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. A reception will also be held in the Glooscap Community Centre. Family flowers only, by request. Gerald was born on June 19, 1925 to parents Horace and Cora (Burger) West in Wolfville. He married Mildred (Crewe) West on November 18, 1950 in Halifax. After attending high school in Hantsport, Gerald joined the RCAF in 1944 at age 19, where he served as a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner. His service included submarine patrol over the North Atlantic. After the war, Gerald went on to get a science degree at Mount Allison University, N.B., a degree in Chemical Engineering at Dalhousie University, Halifax and was a certified Marine Chemist. After university, Gerald did naval research work, was a partner in Wyman and West Limited Consulting and Analytical Chemists and Nova Scotia Department of Environment. With much kicking and screaming, Gerald retired from his company, Gerald L. West and Associates in 2001. Gerald was a member of many organizations, including The Chemical Institute of Canada, The Nova Scotia Safety Council, The American Society of Lubrication Engineers, The American Society for Testing Materials, The Association of Official Racing Chemists and The Chemical Society of Great Britain. A devoted man, Gerald loved the companionship of his large family and was always eager to host gatherings with lots of good food and laughter. He had a passion for the skies, often flying family, friends and neighbours around the Maritimes in his private plane. Mildred and Gerald did their fair share of travel to England, Germany, New York and went on several cruise ships. They wintered in Largo, Fla. for 24 seasons where they formed incredible bonds of friendship with again much good food and laughter. A busy life didn’t stop Gerald from being an active member of the Lockhartville Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons, was a Trustee, Sunday school teacher and Young People’s Leader. Gerald took his civic duties seriously. He joined the Rotary Club as a young man and it was very common in later years to see him diligently selling tickets for Food For Thought and other fundraisers. Gerald was a Shriner and was awarded his 50th year Freemason pin in 2015 at Poyntz Lodge with his sons Stephen and Kevin in attendance. In 2010, Gerald was the only Canadian to be included in an American Tribute to the Second World War Veterans in Washington. 1709 WEST, Stephen Franklyn

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Stephen Franklyn West, on November 28, 2021. Stephen was born in Halifax on October 10, 1951, to Gerald and Mildred (Crewe) West. Though the West boys were all born in Halifax, they moved to Lockhartville when they were very young. Stephen loved his family, his friends, music and the sea. His love of music was lifelong, he played various instruments, but his instrument of choice was the clawhammer banjo. He played in many bands and entertained at festivals, pubs and music venues. He had a large family of musical and music loving friends, who will miss him dearly. As much as Stephen loved music, he had an equal love of the sea. Most of the warmer months, you would find Stephen and Joann on their boat, “Trinity”, sailing to islands and locations on the South Shore with friends and family. A day on the ocean with Stephen and Joann was always so much fun. Stephen had a long career in oil exploration, in directional drilling, which took him to many countries all over the world. He always claimed that his favorite country was Vietnam while his least favorite was Angola, where he had to exit quickly amid a military coup and the Ebola virus. His travels and work stories were always wonderful, fun and sometimes terrifying to listen to. Stephen also had a pilot’s license, he and his father shared a love of flying and there were a select few who were actually brave enough to go up with them. If Stephen taught us anything, it is to do what you love, follow your passion, live life to the fullest. He did that every day. Stephen loved his family enormously. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Gerald; and his brother, Michael. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Mahone Islands Conservation Association.
