1530 SALSMAN (Jones), Evelyn May
Age 91 of Halifax. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Evelyn May (Jones) Salsman on October 26, 2014, in QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born and raised in Hantsport, she was the daughter of the late Sidney St. Clair and Ethel (Yeaton) Jones. After graduating from Windsor Academy in 1941, Evelyn attended Mount Allison University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. She was employed by Imperial Oil in Halifax after the war, and in 1948 married Dean W. Salsman, with whom she shared a full and happy life. Evelyn was a loving and beloved wife, mother, friend and \'Nanny\' to 11 grandchildren. While her interest in reading, the arts, politics, history and gardening were evident through her entire life, her commitment to family and her strong faith were defining qualities. Her cozy cottages at Evangeline Beach and later Mason’s Point were the centre of the family ’s summer life for many years, and she rarely missed the communal swim at high tide. She continued to produce superb meals for her ever-growing family well into her ninth decade, serving pies that would rival those of any pastry chef. Music also played a large role in her life, and the sound of her clear and true singing was a joy to hear even during the last few weeks of her life. Evelyn’s caring nature and firm belief in people’s fundamental goodness made helping others central to her life. She was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s United Church in Halifax, where she sang in the choir and was an active member of evening auxiliary of the United Church Women. Evelyn also served on the board of Pine Hill Divinity Hall, on the Board of Regents of Mount Allison University and as a volunteer with the Kiwanis Music Festival. In 1993 she received special recognition for over 25 years of service to Meals on Wheels. She was committed to protecting the environment long before this became commonplace. Although Evelyn could be a quiet observer of life, she also had an adventurous spirit and a wideranging group of friends and interests. She loved to travel and explore, whether it was in her father’s dinghy on the Avon River or to the shores of Indonesia and India. Together, she and Dean explored many exotic locales, during vacations and visits to their far-flung family. In later years, their winters were spent in Sarasota, Fla., where they enjoyed swimming, golfing and playing bridge with family and friends. But the highlight of her year was always the time spent at Berwick United Church Camp, where she stayed in the rustic cabin built by her father. Often accompanied by her children and grandchildren, Evelyn attended the camp for 89 of her 91 years and was an active volunteer. Evelyn had a sunny disposition, keen insight, deep faith and quiet wisdom. These qualities enabled her to cope with several health challenges in her later years, and remain a constant source of strength for her family and friends.

1532 Samuel Francis “Sam” Kenny (Inspector, Ret’d) was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 18, 1949, to Dr. George and Winnifred (MacAulay) Kenny. His death occurred in Fredericton, New Brunswick on April 12, 2023. He grew up in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, and often expounded on the benefits of living in this wonderful small town.

Although it was not always apparent, Sam was well educated. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia, a Bachelor of Education from Dalhousie, and a Masters of Education Degree from the University of New Brunswick. He did a short stint as a teacher, but decided he had a different calling, and at the age of 31, he trained in Regina to become a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He enjoyed a wonderful career for 31 years with postings in Saint John, Campbellton, Hillsborough, Fredericton, Oromocto, Minto, Ottawa, and Charlottetown. Throughout his career he had wonderful support and encouragement from his commanding officers.

He developed close relationships with people in those communities and his exploits were legendary. He was a member of the emergency response team, when stationed in New Brunswick, and despite being much older than most of his teammates, he loved the opportunity to train (read: wrestle) with his colleagues. Apparently, Sam never lost a match during his career. Until this current one. He found solace in the fact that everyone loses the last one.

Ironically, the debilitating back injuries which caused him excruciating pain, and shortened his life, stemmed from the rescue of a person stranded by a high tide on the Bay of Fundy, in the 1980’s. This event led to ruptured discs, two back surgeries, and serious spinal deformities.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Carolyn, of Tillsonburg, Ontario.

Sam has relatives and friends galore in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario, and made annual pilgrimages to reconnect with them.

In 2002, Sam was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award, to honour his contributions to his community, particularly in the fight against domestic violence. He was also active in the employee assistance program within the RCMP. He particularly enjoyed working with the youth where he was stationed, always engaging them to be part of the solution to problems that existed in their community.

Sam loved to work out. Wherever he was posted, he made daily use of the workout facilities. He was a strong runner, competing in the Cabot Trail Relay several times. He loved running the steep inclines that other runners hated, notably Cape Smoky in Cape Breton, and the hills in Odell Park and Regent Street. He played hockey at the university level, and thereafter with any team that would have him. He was particularly good at play in the corners. His last team was the Minto Miners, and the tournaments in Newfoundland produced endless stories. Sam also loved restoring and refurbishing old houses. He attempted all jobs, from parging basement walls, to plumbing, wiring, roofing, adding additions to houses and finish carpentry. His properties were always beautifully maintained. He loved to play guitar, and was known to belt out a tune on occasion.

Because of his relentless pain and diminished quality of life, Sam chose to have a medically assisted death, and he took comfort in knowing how and when his life would end. The nurses and doctors who worked with him through this process were empathetic, and very professional, making it a positive and enlightening experience.

Sam requested that there be no fuss made about his death. He was ready and happy to go. There will be no visitation or funeral. However, we know his friends and family will remember him in appropriate ways. Lots of the stories will be retold, and will likely begin with, “Remember the time that Sam….”

His was a life, well lived, and rewarding to the end. Officer Sam Kenny is now, 10-35. Off duty.

1536 SANFORD, Maine - Helen King Dostie, a retired financial executive known for her kindness and wit, died of Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the age of 74.

Helen King Dostie was born on January 12, 1940, in Farmington, New Hampshire, to Osee Mae Salter King and James Henry King. Her father was a woodsman and her mother a seamstress and dressmaker; they lived in the tiny town of Tamworth, with Helen's two brothers, Carl and Fred, where the children were instilled with the values of strong work ethic, quality of work, community support, friendship and family. Helen graduated eighth grade from the one-room, single teacher, school house in Tamworth, and soon after moved, with her family, to Sanford, Maine, where she graduated from Sanford High School in 1957.

On August 6, 1960, Helen married Roland Dostie. They were married for 40 years, lived in Sanford and had two daughters together; Debra and Diane. After graduating from high school, Helen received an Associate Degree in 1959 from Nasson College, in Springvale, Maine. Following college, Helen began working full time at the Sanford Savings and Loan Association as an accounting clerk and resigned 22 years later as Vice President and Corporate Secretary. In December, 1981, Mrs. Dostie went to work for NRG Barriers, Inc., a small manufacturer of roofing insulation located in Sanford. After 15 years of service with the company, Helen retired in April, 1996, then the company's Assistant Controller. This allowed her to focus on her greatest love, her family. Helen was thankful for her early retirement, as it allowed her and her husband to enjoy four years of retirement together before Roland's passing in November, 2000.

Over the years Helen and her husband and their family enjoyed many summers at cottages on Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine, and Schoodic Lake in Lakeview Plantation, Maine. Helen and her husband also enjoyed a trip of a lifetime together in 1981, three weeks in Scotland and England. Helen loved to travel, and she did so extensively with several close friends and family after her husband's passing. Places Helen traveled included Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, South Dakota, Washington, Nevada, many parts of Canada, the Panama Canal, the Mediterranean, all parts of Europe, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera and South America. For several years she also enjoyed time during the winter in Florida with family. Her final trip was taken one year ago to Las Vegas with her daughters, sister-in-law and a niece. The quintet toured all over the city, saw shows and gambled a bit, and of course, Helen was the biggest winner.

Mrs. Dostie was a member of the Nasson College Alumni Association and spent many hours volunteering for the group after her retirement. She was a member of the board of directors and served as the Financial Secretary for several years. In October, 2000, Helen was presented the "Distinguished Alumni Award" for her many contributions.

When not spending time with family, or traveling, or volunteering, Helen's favorite pastime was following sports. She had an amazing memory and could talk sports statistics with the best of the avid fans she knew. She loved baseball, football, basketball and NASCAR. In February, 2010, she attended the Daytona 500 with her brother-in-law and three nephews. At the event she instructed the nephews on the finer points of NASCAR and they were impressed with the breadth of their New England aunt's knowledge of NASCAR's history and drivers.

Of her life Helen said, "I feel fortunate to be able to enjoy my family. The grand children are a joy and I look forward to attending their many programs and sporting events. I have many good friends and feel keeping busy is important. Life is good!"

Helen is predeceased by her husband, Roland Dostie, brother Carl (Dint) Pulsifer, brother Frederick Pulsifer and wife Carolyn, sister-in-law Charline Frink and husband John.

Garth passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, January 10, 2019 in Hants Community Hospital, with his family by his side, as he put the old Plymouth in gear and drove off into the sunset for the last time. Born in the old Payzant Memorial Hospital in Windsor on July 11, 1941, his parents were Cecil and Jean (Black) Scott. He started his career in Halifax in 1960 at Wm. Stairs Son & Morrow Ltd. as a stock boy, worked his way up to Sales Manager and went on to Bird-Stairs. He moved on to Sales Manager of T.P. Calkin in Kentville combined with Sumner Co. in Moncton. In 1981 he and Sharon formed Scott Sales and Marketing, an Industrial Sales Agency for the Atlantic Provinces and in 1998 started a used car business as well - a sideline from his love of antique cars. In 2005, they opened their \'Memories\' Museum on their property in Hantsport to display their antique vehicles and memorabilia collectibles for everyone to enjoy. He was an Elder in the United Church in Hantsport for many years, Past-President of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, Past Master of the Poyntz Masonic Lodge, member of the Avon United Hand Bell Choir, Director of the Hantsport Historical Society, member of the Windsor Curling Club, Past-President of the Halifax Antique Car Club and member of the British Car Club. He was also one of the \'Beach Boys\' who tested the warm waters of the Avon River quite often. He was so proud of the history of Hantsport and its people, he shared it with everyone he met in his travels near and far. Garth possessed a wealth of knowledge on many topics and loved to share his memories while visiting Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Wales and all over Canada and the U.S. For the past 20 years, he had been spending time with his buddies in Tennessee, travelling around with their bands and even recording a couple of CD’s - as he always said, he had more nerve than talent, and we were quick to agree. He was willing to try most anything. Garth was so proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments in their everyday lives, soccer, hockey and horseback riding. He was predeceased by his parents and infant brother, Robert.
