1161 Mary Louise Brewster, born January 23, 1928 in Hantsport, NS, passed away on April 3, 2017, at the Hants Community Hospital with her family by her side. She lived most of her life in Hantsport, where she was very active in her community. She was a dedicated member of the United Church and belonged to many groups and sang in the choir. She also volunteered for the town, filling the bus every year for the annual trip to the International Tattoo. She belonged to the Red Hatters, and was on the senior games committee, which was held every Spring. She also resided in River Denys, Cape Breton, for 27 years and was also active in that community, receiving volunteer of the year, of which she was very proud. She moved back to Hantsport in 1996 and lived in Jubilee Court for over 20 years, in which time she arranged musical entertainment to come in monthly, and the annual Christmas party as long as she was able to do so.

She lived an active, fulfilling life, she did it her way. She was productive to any and all areas of her life.

Being a people person, very sociable, she was known and liked by many, young and old. Her friends were from far and wide and she kept in contact with them all. She loved the Saturday night jamboree and had a reserved seat. She was always in possession of a joke to share, and will be sadly missed by her family and friends, of which she had many.

Louise was predeceased by grandson Ronald Strader and brother Douglas Mitchell.

A heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff and doctors at the Hants Community Hospital.

\"Mother was a person that could make a life long friend in a by chance meeting at a bus stop, train station or just walking down a road.\"

Celebration of life to take place on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church, Hantsport, NS. Also, visitation with family members to be held in the lounge at Jubilee Court for shared memories and condolences, April 11, 2017 from 6:30 until 8:30. Family Flowers only. 1163 Mason Hounsell, Alanna With the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Alanna Laurel Dawn Mason-Hounsell, on July 29, 2024, following a brief but hard-fought battle with cancer. Alanna was raised in Bishopville, and was predeceased by her parents, Donna Mason (Vaughan) and Garnet Mason; and grandmother, Verna Vaughan (Tracey). She attended school in Avonport, and at Horton High School, and Mount Saint Vincent University. In her youth, Alanna was a champion swimmer holding many records including the Provincial 12 and under female 200m Breaststroke from 1981 until 2018. She worked as a camp counsellor and lifeguard at Kingswood Bible Camp and was very involved in the Hantsport Baptist Youth Group. Alanna attended Mount Saint Vincent University from 1987 to 1992 (BSc, Psychology & Gerontology), where she had an outstanding presence on the campus. She befriended all she encountered, and in many ways was the heart of the Mount community at that time. If there was a Mystics athletic event, you could count on Alanna to be there with her pots and pans, and then always leading the party at Vinnies afterwards. She was a Student Union Representative, an RA, and served as a member of the Athletics and Recreation Society and the MSVU Alumnae Board. In 1991, Alanna began her career at Gateway Homes Inc. as a Support Worker. She stayed with Gateway her entire career, even working through her first round of treatment, and progressed in her career there to Supervisor and then into Human Resources & Training. Gateway's goal of "Making Meaningful Differences in the Lives of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities" was also Alanna's personal goal. She made a meaningful difference in the lives of everyone she met, at work and outside of work, regardless of ability. Alanna was deeply involved for many years with the Special Olympics where she served as Head of Aquatics (Dartmouth) and twice as the Head Coach for Team Nova Scotia Aquatics at the National Games. She loved and cared for her swimmers like a second family. In 2009, Alanna was recognized as the Swim Nova Scotia Volunteer of the Year and in 2012 she received the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal for her outstanding contributions to the Province of Nova Scotia. Alanna was also an active member of Deepwater Church and Crossfit Kinetics. However, more important than all Alanna did and accomplished, is who she was. Alanna was a wife, a daughter, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, a coach, an advocate, a mentor, the most loyal friend, and the kindest soul. She was smart, funny, and gave the best hugs. She was an avid reader and lover of music and red wine. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was the life of the party and the shoulder to cry on. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who were fortunate enough to know her. As Alanna would have wanted, a Celebration of Life Party will be held on September 13, 2024 in the Multi-Purpose Room at Mount Saint Vincent University from 6-9 p.m. where all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Alanna's memory to NS Special Olympics or the SPCA. Mason, Alanna Laurel Dawn (I10412)

1194 MCLELLAN-MACDONALD, Shirley Nancy

No doubt Shirley Nancy McLellan-MacDonald is reading this obituary with a cup of coffee in hand and smiling. As part of her morning routine, she would read the Chronicle Herald from cover to cover, including the obituaries. And now, her name appears. Mom was 88 years young when she passed away suddenly on June 24, 2020 in Haliburton Place, Windsor. She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Meda (Tufts) Wile; her first husband, James McLellan; her second husband, Ralph "Rassie" MacDonald and sisters, Ermie Coolen, Lily Russell, Florence Silver, Hilda Neily and her sweet dog, Teddy. Mom loved family visits. She made the best rocky road squares and hodge podge in Nova Scotia- "It’s all in the cream," she’d say. Other passions included tending her summertime flowers at her Mount Denson home, which she shared with Ralph. "The secret is talking to them," she confided. She could sit in her sunporch for hours and watch the birds in the yard. Pretty sure she named them all. And nothing topped a bowl of fresh strawberries and cream. "It’s all in the cream and lots of sugar." Mom loved to play Big Mama with Ralph and laughed victoriously when she emerged champion. We would hear about it on the phone the following day. Music was another of mom’s loves. Sometimes she’d startle those around her when she spontaneously belted out all the words of a song at a moment’s notice, triggered by something you said. Christmas was a winter wonderland at mom’s place. She’d say, "Just one more thing!" and add another decoration. She loved shopping, but particularly in December. When she walked into a store before Christmas, you could see the managers rub their hands together with glee. Later, the lobby of Macleod House where mom resided for 18 months became the new wonderland setting. During her final days at Haliburton Place, mom was fortunate to have her sister, Laverne, as her roommate. Yes, Laverne and Shirley. They were typical siblings sharing a room, but they dearly loved and looked out for each other. Haliburton staff were always patient and caring. Mom was fun loving and had a terrific sense of humour. She loved to make people smile and would go out of her way to elicit laughter from someone who was feeling down. Years ago, someone said that arthritis was God’s way of slowing her down. Her life was not always rosy. She suffered from depression most of her life, but she always regained the upper hand. We miss you so much mom, but you are with Rassie and Teddy now, enjoying a glass of beer and a snuggle. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date, when family and friends are allowed to attend. And, at the gathering, there will hopefully be lots of hugs. Mom loved hugs. Memorial donations may be made in mom’s memory to Mount Denson United Baptist Church, PO Box 280, Hantsport, NS B0P 1L0.

Age 30, of Windsor Forks. It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful daughter, Megan on Sunday, September 11, 2022 in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Megan was one of the two bright lights in our family. She made friends wherever life took her and taught us all how to love each other regardless of the challenges which stood between us. Meggie loved life’s simple pleasures, the wind in her face while swinging on the verandah, drives in the car, bowling with friends or just hanging out holding hands with the favourite men in her life. We are going to miss Megs beautiful smile and infectious laugh! To all of Meg's friends, teachers, educational assistants and special educators who helped her over the years, thank you for helping her spread her wings and take in so much of what life had offered her. We have met some incredible people through organizations such as APSEA, Early Intervention, SMILE, The Alexander Society, New Boundaries, Kaleidoscope and the Disability Support Program. A very special thank you to Sara Woodward, Kim Zwicker and families who considered Meg one of their own. For Megan, you were caregivers, big sisters and most importantly her mother while she was in your care. We would also like to acknowledge our collective families who loved and supported Meg over the years. We couldn't have done it without you. Meg was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Douglas and Phyllis Cuvilier; paternal grandmother, Jean Daniels and uncle, Jeff Norman. Private family burial will follow in Windsor Forks Community Cemetery, Windsor Forks.
