Born on May 5, 1936, in the small hamlet of Nicholsville, Mom was a daughter of the late Cecil and Vera (Spinney) Palmer, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Living most of her life in Hantsport, she retired from CKF Inc. after 35 years of service. She loved her small town, her job and the many friends that she met there. She was an avid bowler and was still bowling into her early 80s. Mom loved her visits to the family camp in Bishopville, tending to her flowers and plants and all things canine. But most of all, she loved sharing time with her extended Johnson and MacInnis families. Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband, Leonard MacInnis; brother-in-law, Ronnie MacInnis (Faye); brother, Gerald Palmer and her dear sister, Alfretta Morse (Lawrence), with whom she shared a very special bond. 1007 Kathryn Lorraine Bishop
Age 72, of Greenwich, Kings Co., formerly of Hantsport and Falmouth. It is with broken hearts we announce she has joined the angels on Saturday, April 2, 2022 in the Valley Hospice, Kentville. She has joined her mother and sister who went before just a short time ago. Kathy was born on Saturday, October 29, 1949 to Chauncey “Duke” and Eleanor (Cochrane) Caldwell, the third of seven children.

She attended Hantsport School and furthered her education as a registered nurse in the program provided by Payzant Memorial Hospital in Windsor. Upon graduation from nursing school, she married the man she loved, John R. Bishop and they resided in Hantsport for many years. In later years they lived in Falmouth and then in Greenwich.

According to the poem, Monday’s Child, a child born on a Saturday worked hard for a living. Kathy worked as a nurse until retirement, except for one short career in a bakery. Her baking career may not have been as successful but provided a much needed and short break until her return to her nursing career with the Windsor Elms. Kathy was highly regarded and respected by her peers and the residents, not just as a nurse but as an intelligent, caring and compassionate person. So, yes, this Saturday child worked extremely hard for a living.

Baseball played a large part in her married life, as John was a baseball player and her sons both played baseball. She spent and enjoyed, many hours at ballfields.

She, her sisters and their mother joined together every year for a weekend away which included many activities and much laughter. During one trip, Kathy attempted and was successful in mounting a penny farthing bike, much to the delight of the others. These were special times and provided very treasured memories for her.

Kathy loved puzzles, games (not cards!), crafts and reading. Her favourite games were word games and there were few words that she did not use in Scrabble. Players learned not to question her.

She thoroughly enjoyed combing beaches around Nova Scotia, searching for sea glass and once she had gathered a fairly large amount, she so kindly returned to walk the beaches while dropping the sea glass so others could enjoy finding it as she had. This is who she was.

She had a wonderful sense of humour and could laugh at herself. She one time admitted to driving around the coffee shop several times after placing her order because she was unable to find the take-out window. There were no witnesses to this event, except the woman waiting on her but she shared this story with much laughter.

She was a wonderful friend to many and offered her help whenever she could. She was an extremely important member of her family and will be greatly missed by all who love her.

As a mother of two boys, she took great joy in teaching her grandson, Camden, at a young age, to play in the puddles, splash in the mud and explore the brook that ran through their property.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her dear sister, Heather Bulger; father-in-law, Richard Bishop Sr. and mother-in-law, Florence Bishop.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Valley Regional Hospital, the Valley Hospice, and NP Dawn Lowe for her assistance.

Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will greet visitors Monday, April 11 from 6-8 p.m., masks are encouraged. A public graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the Wellwood Community Hall at the Hantsport Baptist Church, corner of Main and Willow St., Hantsport. Donations in memory of Kathy may be made to Windsor Elms Village, 174 Dyke Rd., Falmouth, NS B0P 1L0; Canadian Cancer Society, 5826 South St, Halifax, NS, B3H 1S6 or a charity of one’s choice.

1011 Keith Allison Spicer – age 71, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, at home, on Saturday, October 31, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Earle and Dorothy (Lane) Spicer. As a successful retail manager in the Annapolis Valley and HRM, Keith started his career at the old IGA in Windsor before moving over to manage front-end retail operations for several pharmacy chains. He enjoyed the last 19 years of his working life at Carl Trider’s Pharmasave in Windsor. Undaunted by marathon commutes to the stores under his oversight, Keith and Joan called Windsor, Lunenburg, Hantsport, and finally Kentville their home. A certifiable motorcycle and car enthusiast, Keith owned all sizes and makes of motorcycles (including now-classic Velocettes) and it was always a lottery as to what type of car he was driving at any given time. He adored Corvettes, and even ownership of a pristine BMW Z4 didn’t quench his desire for one of those classic American sports cars. He loved driving and motorcycling and would head out with Joan on day trips on two or four wheels just because the road beckoned. And make no mistake - if there was a plate of decent fish and chips somewhere along the journey that was the icing on the cake. He was predeceased by his parents Earle and Dorothy Spicer and brother-in-law Maynard (Jake) Crowell. A private funeral service will be held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill following the service. Spicer, Keith Allison (I7030)

1012 Keith Michael Rattew passed away peacefully at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, on September 11, 2023, at age 88 following a stroke.

Keith was born and raised in London, Ontario. Keith started his working life at age 8, selling newspapers on a train that ran from London to Toronto. He joined the Air Force right out of high school and earned his Pilots’ Wings in Gimli, Manitoba. He had fond memories of his first posting, flying the F-86 (Sabre) for 427 Squadron at 3 (Fighter) Wing, Zweibrücken, Germany from 1955 until 1959. After he returned to Canada, Keith joined the Army and travelled with his young growing family through postings in Borden, Petawawa, Kingston, Winnipeg, Cyprus, Calgary, Ottawa, England and back to Ottawa where the family settled. In 1977 he joined the Public Service. He retired in 1988 as Procurement and Financial Manager for the Low Level Air Defence Project. He moved to beautiful British Columbia in the early 90's living there for more than a decade where he attended UBC earning a Master’s of Education. His Master's thesis was titled Transforming the Canadian Healthcare System. He spent years researching healthcare delivery models to reduce costs and provide better patient outcomes only to succumb to dementia before presenting his final work to key stakeholders.

While living in Ottawa, Keith loved to host parties and plan fun activities, outings and gatherings for his family and friends from the “Thursday Night Group”. These included houseboat vacations, destination excursions, cottage stays, car and walking rallies, scavenger hunts, and countless theme parties.

Keith had a lifelong love affair with travel. He travelled throughout Western Europe, favouring the South of France and Italy. He also travelled to Hawaii, Japan, Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Dominican Republic and spent many winters in Mexico and Florida. He often invited family and friends to join him on his travels. He would act as a tour guide to show his guests the nearby sites or the best outdoor patio. Keith always had a camera close by to capture the moment for friends and family but he also appreciated the natural beauty of his surroundings and took hundreds of photos of beautiful flowers, scenery and sunsets. He was happiest surrounded by his friends and family enjoying a delicious meal and a beverage on a patio with a great view. He will be remembered fondly by many.

Per Keith’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. There will be no public funeral service. Instead, there will be a get-together of family and friends at Dad’s favourite restaurant starting at 6 PM on October 5. Friends and family will be contacted by email with further event details.

Flowers are gratefully declined and friends are requested to consider a donation to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of their choice

1015 Kenneth Gary Jones passed away on August 11th, 2014 in Saint Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. He is the son of Joan (Sigsworth) Jones, and the late Thomas Jones. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec on August 19th, 1951, Ken spent his childhood years moving from town to town in Nova Scotia. At the age of 7 he moved to Bridgetown where he would spend the next 10 years of his life, much of which included being the ring leader of the notorious "Church Street Gang". Being the brains of the operation, Ken lead the group in such wholesome activities as raiding neighbors gardens, knocking on doors and running, as well as a less traditional (and much more dangerous) game called "dummy in the road". At the age of 16, Ken moved with his family to Yarmouth, where he lived until graduating from high school, and going off to university. After a year of studies, Ken decided to leave university to explore and work in various places. During his travels, he gained many unique and life shaping experiences in many different places, such as Happy Valley in Labrador (which, it turns out, is not so happy), as well as the Arctic. Ken returned to university a few years later where he majored in history and completed his Bachelor of Arts at Acadia University, and went on to complete his Masters degree and studied for his PhD at the University of New Brunswick.

After his studies, Ken landed a job as a lecturer on Canadian and American history at Acadia University. From there he worked with the Department of Education, and would later start his own business, Acadia Consultants Inc. Although this business was highly successful, he later opted to take a more secure position with the Nova Scotia Community College as Community Education & Training Officer. Ken remained with the college for 25 years, working his way up and creating success in such positions as Dean of Customized Training, Dean of Business Development, and retiring as Dean of Flexible Learning.

Ken was known for so many things; his intelligence, sharp wit, leadership skills, honesty, integrity, and his caring nature. He always put the needs of others before his own, and many people came to him if they needed advice they could rely on, or just someone to confide in. Those who knew him adored his wonderful sense of humour. Email exchanges between the siblings often left everyone in tears with laughter, and the annual "sibling retreats" were filled with laughs, jokes and stories. Ken had an uncanny ability to create unique and quirky nicknames for friends, family and colleagues. Also, like his father before him, Ken carried on a Jones tradition of pranks and practical joking with his siblings, friends and his children; those who have been at the receiving end know the devilish smile that Ken would have on his face after a successful practical joke.

Ken had many passions in life; he loved a good Cuban cigar, blues music, being on the beach, and sports of any kind. Basketball was one of his favorite sports to watch and to play. He suffered many bruises and sprained fingers playing basketball with his "weekend warrior" league. He loved baseball, and was a diehard Blue Jays fan and would claim at the beginning of every season that this was "going to be their year". He enjoyed watching movies, and loved to share quotes and inside jokes from different movies with those who had the same sense of humour that he did. He loved music, and was a drummer for a band called the Saints & Sinners in his younger days (even though he messed up their colour scheme). To this day drumming was a passion of his, as he was often drumming to a beat (sometimes in his head) on the arms of his chair, or the steering wheel while driving.

Of all of Ken's passions in life, his family was the most important. He was a wonderful brother to five siblings, an outstanding and amazing father of two, and very recently, a new grandfather. Ken loved his family more than life itself, and would have done anything for them. They meant the world to him, as he did, and still does, to them.

There will be a visitation which will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014, from 6-9 pm at the White Family Funeral Home in Kentville. There will also be a celebration of his life for family and close friends to be held at a later date. There will be no formal funeral service.

Ken's final act of selflessness was that he chose to be an organ donor. Even after his passing, he is still putting the needs of others first, and saving lives in the process. Rest in peace Ken. We know you are in your glory, on a beach somewhere enjoying a good Cuban cigar. We love you, and you will be, and already are, dearly missed.
Jones, Kenneth Gary (I18441)

Born in Windsor, he was the son of Vivian (West) Hartt, Centreville and the late Gerald Hartt. He was an electrician by trade and was proud to be a member of the IBEW local 625 for over 30 years. Over the years he enjoyed a good many drinks listening to 70s music and telling stories of the good old days with his buddies. He bowled, played darts and enjoyed going on four wheeler trips. Kenny found a new hobby in the last few years of flying drones and aerial photography and hanging out at the "old farts club". Kenny had a big heart (Hartt) and was always there to help when you needed it. In addition to his father, Gerald, he was also predeceased by his father-in-law, Eric Myles.
