April 18, 1929 - August 29, 2020. It is with great sadness that the Sherman family announces the passing of Lieutenant Commander Lee H. Sherman, beloved father and devoted husband to Cora Mae Sherman of Hantsport. Born in Minnesota, Lee was a son of Ben H. Sherman and Ida Lyngstad. Lee grew up in a large family of nine siblings, all of whom predeceased him. Lee’s dad died at a young age, but their family’s presence in the community of St. Paul’s became well known as "Sherman’s Corner", where the community gathered around a grocery store, gas station and generator, invented by Lee’s father. Lee was a handsome, bright young man who obtained his Baccalaureate Degree in Science, with Honors in Math and Physics. He made a name for himself with a storied career as a Jet Pilot in the United States Navy from 1950-1970, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He went on to take up the Presidential call to duty, serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Commander Sherman flew the Douglas Navy AD5 Skyraider and the AD3 Skywarrior, flying off the aircraft carriers, USS Constellation and USS Kitty Hawk. He flew Air to Surface Combat, Reconnaissance Missions and transported Presidential and military dignitaries during the war. He earned the nickname "Deadeye" for his accuracy in flight and navigation and was recognized by the Admiralty for his ability to fly under adverse conditions. He was the recipient of many accolades, including the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement and the Presidential Memorial Certificate in recognition of his devoted and selfless consecration to the Armed Forces of the United States of America. It was while he was stationed in the port of Halifax, that he met his wife, Cora Mae, with whom he had three children. Following his retirement from the United States Navy in 1970, Lee re-invented himself as a real estate agent, commercial property owner, stock trader, and High School Teacher. He worked hard to provide for his family and placed high value on instilling his knowledge, principles and life skills to his children. The son of a preacher, Lee was a man of strong faith. He was one of the founding members of Fellowship Baptist Church in Dartmouth, and was an active member in the church, serving in a variety of capacities over 30 years. Lee was known as a kind, fearless man, with a reputation for large generosity of heart, his twinkling smile and love for his family. When least expected, he was known for his unexpected humor, breaking out into a silly dance. Sadly, later in life, Lee suffered from Alzheimer’s for 10 years, limiting his ability to communicate, move and interact meaningfully. He persevered in the face of great suffering and yet endured with such grace.

1312 Shirley Irene (Brown) Smith - 83, Lockhartville, passed away surrounded by family on June 16, 2023 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born at home in Cheverie, NS on December 1, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Greta (McLellan) Brown.

Shirley loved bowling and belonged to the league for many years in Windsor. She was a member of the Lockhartville Hall seniors club which gave her the opportunity to meet new and old friends, and apply her cooking skills. Playing tv bingo on Wednesday and Thursday nights was a passion she had, not to be interrupted by anything including calls from us girls. The call would always be cut short as she was in a hurry to play. She loved country music, blue grass, jambories and jam sessions. Her sense of humour was known to her friends and family, and she was commonly known as Squirly Shirley.

Mum married the love of her life Keith (Donald) Smith in 1960 and they spend 40 beautiful years together before his passing in July 2001. Together they enjoyed travelling, camping, attending blue grass festivals, and spending time with family and friends.

Mum loved her family very much, even when she didn’t show it. She was especially proud of her daughters, their spouses, and grandchildren in all their achievements in life. The recent pandemic was especially difficult on her as she is a very social person and made her feel isolated and alone like many others. She liked to maintain contact with extended friends and family with each passing made it more difficult as she was unable to see them physically. She could carry on a conversation with anyone she met regardless if the other person was willing or not, but it always brought joy to her to connect with people. Mum loved to vocalize her opinions on topics sometimes unfiltered but always coming from a good place, which made for interesting conversations even with strangers!

A private graveside committal service will be held with close family on Sunday, June 25th, 2023 at 11am, at the Lower Horton Cemetery.

1320 SIRCOM, George Robert Churchill \'Bob\'
Age 88, of Wolfville. Died peacefully on July 4, 2017, in Valley Regional Hospital. Predeceased by daughter, Margaret, in 2011. Bob was born in Halifax to George Sircom and Ethel (Kane) Sircom. He received his education at Rothsay Collegiate School, Royal Roads Naval College and Queen’s University. He was a midshipman on HMCS Magnificent and served in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant. Bob worked as an Assistant Personnel Superintendent at Fundy Gypsum Company for four years before, in 1964, becoming head of the newly-formed Employee Relations Department at Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co. Ltd., and Canadian Keyes Fibre Co. in Hantsport. In 1989, he was appointed Vice President, Human Resources, CKF. He served as Chairman of the Halifax District Personnel Association and of the Human Resource Section of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. Bob lived with his family for 41 years in Hantsport, where he took an active part in the community. He served as Church Warden at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church and as President of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. He was an officer of the Navy League Cadet Corps and a life member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. After retiring in 1992, Bob enjoyed many good years when he and Hilary traveled extensively, and, in the summers, enjoyed their cottage in Chester Basin surrounded by family, friends and dogs. He was never happier than when he was at the helm of his boat \'Hebe\', sailing the waters of Mahone Bay. He and his wife moved to Wolfville in 2008. Sadly, in his later years, he suffered from dementia, but he always kept his dignity and a sense of humour.
