1250 Robert Andrew PEMBERTON — Wolfville

It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of Robert Andrew Pemberton, age 44, on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, in his home in Wolfville, NS. Robert was born in Windsor on September 6, 1978, to Jim and Marlyn (Hebb) Pemberton, of Falmouth. At an early age Robert showed a great aptitude and curiosity for technology. He turned this interest into an over 20 year career in information technology. Robert worked in internet services, government, agriculture and space industry, before getting an urge to go out west. In 2014, with the help of his father and uncles, he made the drive to Calgary to work in the oil and gas industry. Although he enjoyed his time out west, like most Nova Scotians, he longed to return home to be closer to family and friends. In 2021, Robert accepted a position at CKF in Hantsport. Throughout his career he was highly respected by his coworkers. To quote a former co-worker, “he knew his stuff and never met a computer problem he couldn’t solve.” Throughout his life Robert enjoyed soccer, spending time with animals, playing computer games, gardening and cooking. He loved to take monthly trips with his father to Halifax to see what deals they could find. Robert liked to try new recipes and share these creations with family and friends, or help his mother make salsa. His lasagna was a staple at many special occasions. He loved to garden. No matter where he lived he would grow tomatoes, peppers and herbs to have fresh year-round and also to give plants to anyone who wanted them. Robert loved animals from an early age. He would take any opportunity to spend time with pets, either taking the dogs swimming at the lake or relaxing at home. Robert was a private person whose generosity knew no limits. When he heard of something or someone in need, he would be one of the first to offer help. Whether it was building computers from spare parts to give to those who were in need or donating to local fundraisers. Private burial will take place in Centre Falmouth Cemetery.

1254 Robert William "Bob" MacDonald

Of Mount Denson, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in Hants Community Hospital on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. Bob was born November 22, 1940 as the second of four children to John and Celia MacDonald. He was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Spinney (George). After achieving his Certified Management Accountant Certification, Bob moved up to Director of Financial and Administrative Services. In 1989, Bob was appointed Vice-President of Finance and became a member of the Executive Management team where he remained until his retirement. Bob loved sports, playing hockey, softball, tennis and golf, an activity that he enjoyed with his wife Carole. He loved spending a warm summer day slicing and hooking his way down the course while Carole played slow and steady up the middle. It was one of their favorite ways to spend time together until his health declined. Bob and Carole loved to travel, enjoying many trips south searching for sunnier skies and greener golf courses. When not working, studying or playing sports you would find him volunteering to help a friend, family member or an organization close to his heart. He volunteered at the Hantsport Memorial Community Center, was involved in Rotary in Windsor, was an active member/deacon of Mount Denson Baptist Church, and helped maintain the local cemetery. He was always quick to help those in need whether it was with an extra pair of hands or some of his time. Bob loved music and singing and taught himself how to play guitar from a young age. Everyone who knew him was pleased that it replaced an early dalliance with the accordion. He used his gift of music in Mount Denson Baptist Church often leading the hymns, participating in choirs and helping with special holiday songs when called on. Music was an important part of not only his faith but of his home life as well making summer family gatherings and holiday sing-songs a fond memory for those who took part. Bob was a kind, loving, devoted, faithful, generous, dedicated and joyful man who was robbed of his golden years by various ailments and worst of all Alzheimer\'s. He is now at peace and the world is a little worse off without him. He will be greatly missed.

1267 Ronald Roy "Shorty" Hazlett

Age 82, of Falmouth, passed away on October 14, 2020, with his family by his side, after a brief illness. He married the love of his life in the spring of 1955 and together they created a life many could only dream of. They filled their home with love and laughter, with family and with friends. They knew what was important in this life and they lived it every day. He has been received into the loving arms of his daughter, Debbie Beckwith; his son-in-law, Michael Haley; and his partner-in-crime, Kathleen MacKillop; as well as his family and friends who have gone before him. His life touched that of so many. He may have sold you your first home, or maybe he jammed and sang songs with you. You may know him from years of living in Hantsport or New Minas or Falmouth. You may have something he crafted or maybe he took you on a sightseeing flight over the Valley. Maybe he was a colleague or a friend. We don't have to look far to see how his life has impacted this world, and in that he will live on forever. We know what we lost, but more importantly we know what we had. Our lives are better because he was a part of them. Eighty-two years is a long time, but doesn't feel nearly long enough when you have to say goodbye. Instead, we will say "goodbye for now", knowing he will be forever in our hearts and that we will all be together again. A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 24th in Maplewood Cemetery, 1186 King St., Windsor, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating.

1275 SALSMAN (Jones), Evelyn May
Age 91 of Halifax. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Evelyn May (Jones) Salsman on October 26, 2014, in QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born and raised in Hantsport, she was the daughter of the late Sidney St. Clair and Ethel (Yeaton) Jones. After graduating from Windsor Academy in 1941, Evelyn attended Mount Allison University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. She was employed by Imperial Oil in Halifax after the war, and in 1948 married Dean W. Salsman, with whom she shared a full and happy life. Evelyn was a loving and beloved wife, mother, friend and \'Nanny\' to 11 grandchildren. While her interest in reading, the arts, politics, history and gardening were evident through her entire life, her commitment to family and her strong faith were defining qualities. Her cozy cottages at Evangeline Beach and later Mason’s Point were the centre of the family ’s summer life for many years, and she rarely missed the communal swim at high tide. She continued to produce superb meals for her ever-growing family well into her ninth decade, serving pies that would rival those of any pastry chef. Music also played a large role in her life, and the sound of her clear and true singing was a joy to hear even during the last few weeks of her life. Evelyn’s caring nature and firm belief in people’s fundamental goodness made helping others central to her life. She was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s United Church in Halifax, where she sang in the choir and was an active member of evening auxiliary of the United Church Women. Evelyn also served on the board of Pine Hill Divinity Hall, on the Board of Regents of Mount Allison University and as a volunteer with the Kiwanis Music Festival. In 1993 she received special recognition for over 25 years of service to Meals on Wheels. She was committed to protecting the environment long before this became commonplace. Although Evelyn could be a quiet observer of life, she also had an adventurous spirit and a wideranging group of friends and interests. She loved to travel and explore, whether it was in her father’s dinghy on the Avon River or to the shores of Indonesia and India. Together, she and Dean explored many exotic locales, during vacations and visits to their far-flung family. In later years, their winters were spent in Sarasota, Fla., where they enjoyed swimming, golfing and playing bridge with family and friends. But the highlight of her year was always the time spent at Berwick United Church Camp, where she stayed in the rustic cabin built by her father. Often accompanied by her children and grandchildren, Evelyn attended the camp for 89 of her 91 years and was an active volunteer. Evelyn had a sunny disposition, keen insight, deep faith and quiet wisdom. These qualities enabled her to cope with several health challenges in her later years, and remain a constant source of strength for her family and friends.

1279 SANFORD, Maine - Helen King Dostie, a retired financial executive known for her kindness and wit, died of Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the age of 74.

Helen King Dostie was born on January 12, 1940, in Farmington, New Hampshire, to Osee Mae Salter King and James Henry King. Her father was a woodsman and her mother a seamstress and dressmaker; they lived in the tiny town of Tamworth, with Helen's two brothers, Carl and Fred, where the children were instilled with the values of strong work ethic, quality of work, community support, friendship and family. Helen graduated eighth grade from the one-room, single teacher, school house in Tamworth, and soon after moved, with her family, to Sanford, Maine, where she graduated from Sanford High School in 1957.

On August 6, 1960, Helen married Roland Dostie. They were married for 40 years, lived in Sanford and had two daughters together; Debra and Diane. After graduating from high school, Helen received an Associate Degree in 1959 from Nasson College, in Springvale, Maine. Following college, Helen began working full time at the Sanford Savings and Loan Association as an accounting clerk and resigned 22 years later as Vice President and Corporate Secretary. In December, 1981, Mrs. Dostie went to work for NRG Barriers, Inc., a small manufacturer of roofing insulation located in Sanford. After 15 years of service with the company, Helen retired in April, 1996, then the company's Assistant Controller. This allowed her to focus on her greatest love, her family. Helen was thankful for her early retirement, as it allowed her and her husband to enjoy four years of retirement together before Roland's passing in November, 2000.

Over the years Helen and her husband and their family enjoyed many summers at cottages on Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine, and Schoodic Lake in Lakeview Plantation, Maine. Helen and her husband also enjoyed a trip of a lifetime together in 1981, three weeks in Scotland and England. Helen loved to travel, and she did so extensively with several close friends and family after her husband's passing. Places Helen traveled included Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, South Dakota, Washington, Nevada, many parts of Canada, the Panama Canal, the Mediterranean, all parts of Europe, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera and South America. For several years she also enjoyed time during the winter in Florida with family. Her final trip was taken one year ago to Las Vegas with her daughters, sister-in-law and a niece. The quintet toured all over the city, saw shows and gambled a bit, and of course, Helen was the biggest winner.

Mrs. Dostie was a member of the Nasson College Alumni Association and spent many hours volunteering for the group after her retirement. She was a member of the board of directors and served as the Financial Secretary for several years. In October, 2000, Helen was presented the "Distinguished Alumni Award" for her many contributions.

When not spending time with family, or traveling, or volunteering, Helen's favorite pastime was following sports. She had an amazing memory and could talk sports statistics with the best of the avid fans she knew. She loved baseball, football, basketball and NASCAR. In February, 2010, she attended the Daytona 500 with her brother-in-law and three nephews. At the event she instructed the nephews on the finer points of NASCAR and they were impressed with the breadth of their New England aunt's knowledge of NASCAR's history and drivers.

Of her life Helen said, "I feel fortunate to be able to enjoy my family. The grand children are a joy and I look forward to attending their many programs and sporting events. I have many good friends and feel keeping busy is important. Life is good!"

Helen is predeceased by her husband, Roland Dostie, brother Carl (Dint) Pulsifer, brother Frederick Pulsifer and wife Carolyn, sister-in-law Charline Frink and husband John.
