    Eric William Hughes - 75, of Hants Border passed away on March 18, 2018 at home with family and a good friend by his side. Dad was born on October 1, 1942 in Wolfville, NS to Jack and Ann Hughes formerly of Avonport. Dad married his sweetheart, Shirley Ann Harris in September, 1963. Dad was predeceased by his parents and our Mom, Shirley, eight short months ago. Dad loved tinkering around in his vegetable garden, his dog, Blanket but most of all he loved Mom and was completely lost when she left us. Donations in his memory can be made to the Hantsport and Area Food Bank.

    Eric married Shirley Ann Harris in Sep 1963. Shirley (daughter of Roy Harris and Lillian Bezanson) was born in 1945 in Wolfville, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 7 Jul 2017 in Hants Border, Kings, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    HUGHES, John W. \'Jack\' — Passed away in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memo­rial Building, QEII on October 25, 2011, at the age of 94. Born in Avon­port, he was the son of the late Wil­liam Hughes and Susan (Brooks) Hughes. He at­tended Avonport Elementary School and Wolf­ville High School graduating in 1933, then Horton Academy, Acadia University, with a degree in account­ing in 1935. During his years in Wolf­ville schools, he played hockey and basketball. From 1935 to 1939 he was employed at various construction companies while playing hockey, bas­ketball and softball on Avonport teams. In 1939 he went to Rhode Island and was employed with Nieforth Brothers Construction returning home in 1940 to enlist in the Canadian Army as a private. He progressed through the ranks and was commis­sioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942, and retired at war’s end as Lieutenant. Af­ter the Second World War, he worked in Halifax until 1948 when he pur­chased the general store and post of­fice in Avonport, which he operated until 1962. He then became manager of the Canada Employment Office in Windsor, remaining there until his re­tirement in 1979. After his retirement, he was consulted by several authors for his knowledge of the Avonport community and his family’s involve­ment with the Dominion Atlantic Rail­way. He loved the company of family, friends and neighbours, and enjoyed a game of golf, pool, cards or a swim in the Minas Basin well into his late 80` s. He was prede­ceased by his wife of 68 years, Helen Ann; infant daughter, Diann; daugh­ters-in-law, Joyce and Dawna and an infant granddaughter, Pamela. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 28, in Lower Hor­ton Cemetery, Grand Pré, Kings Co.
