GARLAND, George Whitfield \'Whit\'
Age 88 years, of Dykeland Lodge in Windsor and formerly of Hant­sport, passed away on January 3rd, 2014, with family by his side. Born in Baddeck Forks, Cape Bre­ton, on March 26th, 1925; he was a son of the late David Murray and Catherine Isabel (Buchanan) Garland. Predeceased by his brothers, John and Robert; sisters, Ethel, Isabel, Mabel, and Catherine; son, George, and grand­daughter, Sarah. He started out his work career as a farmer and logger in Baddeck Forks, where he was also an avid hunter and fisherman. After many years on the farm, he moved his family to Hantsport where he worked various jobs. His last job was Minas Basin Pulp and Power where he retired with 28 years ser­vice as a carpenter. After retiring, he continued using his carpentry skills and other talents helping family and friends with various projects, includ­ing new homes for his sons; he al­ways had a pencil and tape measure in his pocket. He enjoyed tinkering and was one of the first generation recyclers. He also planted, harvest­ed, and preserved many vegetable gardens as well puttering around the flower garden. When not busy, he would be sitting on the front porch (dad’s hangout) watching tele­vision, reading, and talking to family when they stopped by.

George married Janice Marguerite Arenburg on 29 Aug 1947 in Baddeck Forks, Nova Scotia. Janice (daughter of George Joseph Arenburg and Jean Marguerite Ward) was born on 3 Jul 1929 in Halifax, Nova Scotia; died on 6 Mar 2016 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. GARLAND, Janice Marguerite
Age 86, of Windsor/Hantsport, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor where she was a resident for the last three years. Born on July 3, 1929, in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late George and Jean (Ward) Arenburg. Besides her parents, George and Jean (Ward) Arenburg, she was predeceased by her husband, George Whitfield Garland (2014); son, George Murray Garland (1979); sisters, Donna Connors and Beatrice 'Penny' O’Sullivan. A Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 11 in Avon United Church, Hantsport, with Rev. Beth Johnston officiating. Interment in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.
