    Name:
    Harold William Gloade was born in Greywood, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, in 1920. His father, Newel Glade, was a Micmac Indian, born in LeQuille, Nova Scotia. His mother, Rose MacKay, was half Scotch and half German.

    The family moved to Truro, Nova Scotia in the spring of 1927 and lived exclusively with Micmac there, where he learned to speak Micmac fluently.

    He married Irene McDonald in 1938, enlisted in the Army in 1942, and was discharged in 1946. He moved to Ottawa and worked briefly at a department store, as a census clerk for the Department of Trade and Commerce, as a combine operator in Texas for two years, and in various jobs throughout his life.

    In 1983, he had his first short story published ad he as devoted his time to writing about people he remembers warmly.

    He now lives in Cambridge, Ontario. [1991]
