  1. 2.  Arnold Augustus Wellwood was born on 29 Jan 1914 in Lockhartville, Kings, Nova Scotia (son of Edgar Roland Wellwood and Leila Edna Parker); died on 7 Dec 2007 in Kitchener, Ontario.

    WELLWOOD, Arnold A. - Passed away in Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ont., on Thursday, December 7, 2007, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Leila (Parker) Wellwood; brother, Edgar Harris Wellwood, and sister, Dorothy Wellwood. Arnold grew up in Hantsport and graduated from Acadia University (B.Sc., M.Sc.). After marrying Fran in 1942, they moved to Montreal where he taught at McGill University. During the war, his research focused on an alternative plant-based fuel. They later moved to Guelph, Ont., where he taught at Ontario Agricultural College (University of Guelph). In 1956 he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., with a Ph.D. in genetics. From 1958-60, Arnold and his family lived in Nigeria where he developed a high-yielding type of corn. After teaching at the University of Connecticut, he returned to Canada to teach at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. in the Biology Department (1963-80). He and Fran spent their retirement in Kentville. They enjoyed their summers at their cottage in Grand Pré and many winters in Florida, more recently returning to Kitchener to live. Arnold was an avid photographer and enjoyed playing in a musical recorder group, woodworking and participating in the annual bird census. He was a past member of First Baptist Church, Guelph, where he sang in the choir, Highland Baptist Church, Kitchener, and Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot. A memorial service will be held in Winston Park Retirement Home in Kitchener at a later date.

    WELLWOOD, Frances Ethel - Passed away December 23, 2009, at the age of 91. She was the wife of the late Arnold Wellwood. They celebrated their 65th anniversary before his passing in 2007. Born in Lockhartville to Iona and Emerson Hutchinson, she was a dear sister to Jean Weagle, Frank (Madeleine) Hutchinson, Mildred Lutwick, Dot (Chester) Reese, Madge (Vernon) Davison, Joan Miller, Carol (Jim) Legge, Richard (Mary) Hutchinson. Predeceased by Margaret Rose and Ralph (Isabel) Hutchinson. After marrying Arnie in 1942, they moved to Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que., where she put her business college skills to use at the Bank of Montreal and at Macdonald College, McGill University. Other moves took them to Guelph, Ont., Nigeria, Connecticut and Kitchener, Ont. Upon retirement, they returned to their roots in Nova Scotia, settling in Kentville. Fran loved summers at their Evangeline Beach cottage in Grand Pré and enjoyed many winters in Largo, Fla. Five years ago, they moved to Winston Park Retirement Home in Kitchener. Family was very important to Fran. She took much delight in holiday gatherings and family reunions. She was very proud of the academic accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Her love of travel took her across Canada, through most of the United States, to Europe and the Caribbean. She was an expert seamstress and gourmet cook, and enjoyed square dancing and playing bridge. Fran will be remembered for her ready smile and kind words to others. A memorial service will happen at a later date at Winston Park. Interment of ashes will take place in Nova Scotia in the summer.
