    Died:
    SALSMAN (Jones), Evelyn May
Age 91 of Halifax. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Evelyn May (Jones) Salsman on October 26, 2014, in QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born and raised in Hantsport, she was the daughter of the late Sidney St. Clair and Ethel (Yeaton) Jones. After graduating from Windsor Academy in 1941, Evelyn attended Mount Allison University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. She was employed by Imperial Oil in Halifax after the war, and in 1948 married Dean W. Salsman, with whom she shared a full and happy life. Evelyn was a loving and beloved wife, mother, friend and \'Nanny\' to 11 grandchildren. While her interest in reading, the arts, politics, history and gardening were evident through her entire life, her commitment to family and her strong faith were defining qualities. Her cozy cottages at Evangeline Beach and later Mason’s Point were the centre of the family ’s summer life for many years, and she rarely missed the communal swim at high tide. She continued to produce superb meals for her ever-growing family well into her ninth decade, serving pies that would rival those of any pastry chef. Music also played a large role in her life, and the sound of her clear and true singing was a joy to hear even during the last few weeks of her life. Evelyn’s caring nature and firm belief in people’s fundamental goodness made helping others central to her life. She was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s United Church in Halifax, where she sang in the choir and was an active member of evening auxiliary of the United Church Women. Evelyn also served on the board of Pine Hill Divinity Hall, on the Board of Regents of Mount Allison University and as a volunteer with the Kiwanis Music Festival. In 1993 she received special recognition for over 25 years of service to Meals on Wheels. She was committed to protecting the environment long before this became commonplace. Although Evelyn could be a quiet observer of life, she also had an adventurous spirit and a wideranging group of friends and interests. She loved to travel and explore, whether it was in her father’s dinghy on the Avon River or to the shores of Indonesia and India. Together, she and Dean explored many exotic locales, during vacations and visits to their far-flung family. In later years, their winters were spent in Sarasota, Fla., where they enjoyed swimming, golfing and playing bridge with family and friends. But the highlight of her year was always the time spent at Berwick United Church Camp, where she stayed in the rustic cabin built by her father. Often accompanied by her children and grandchildren, Evelyn attended the camp for 89 of her 91 years and was an active volunteer. Evelyn had a sunny disposition, keen insight, deep faith and quiet wisdom. These qualities enabled her to cope with several health challenges in her later years, and remain a constant source of strength for her family and friends.

Evelyn married Dean Willis Salsman in 1948. Dean was born on 11 Jul 1923 in Waterville, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 8 Feb 2015 in Halifax, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
