    Notes:

    Died:
POPE, William Robert 'Bill' — 87, of Mount Denson, Hants Co., passed away in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, on June 14, 2010. Born in Pictou in 1923, he was predeceased by his parents, the late Robert and Rena (Young) Pope; son, Robert; sister, Margaret (Hantsport); brother, Russel (Helen) (Strathroy, Ont.); several cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was a graduate of Dalhousie University and Pine Hill Divinity Hall. Bill’s strong sense of public service motivated him to enter the ministry, serving in pastorates of the United Church for seven years before becoming one of the founding members of Windsor Elms and its first administrator. Although working on a part-time basis, Bill saw the Elms grow to a 120-bed nursing home. At the same time he established a family-based publishing company, Lancelot Press, that flourished for over 25 years. The company published histories, biographies, books on art, health and spirituality, as well as material of local interest. Leaving the Elms, Bill expanded his publishing activities and worked with both local and national authors in the publishing of over 500 titles. He wrote two books; A New Relationship, about the loss of his son, Robert, to cancer, and Dreams to Reality, an autobiography. Bill established a spiritual magazine called The Second Mile, which was published for a period of 25 years. He organized and hosted, along with one of his theological professors, Dr. John B. Corston, 10 group trips to various parts of the world, including two trips to the Holy Land (Israel). Bill was a member of the Windsor Rotary Club for over 35 years, a past president and a Paul Harris Fellow. As a former program director at the YMCA in Halifax, Bill had a love of sports and was a fierce competitor among a close-knit group of tennis enthusiasts who met regularly at the South End Tennis Club. Bill also enjoyed landscaping his hilltop property in Mount Denson. Bill was a gifted public speaker and a dedicated team leader who inspired many remarkable individuals to work with him in the pursuit of worthwhile causes. On the death of his son, Robert (a talented artist who portrayed his cancer experience in a memorable series of paintings) Bill established the Robert Pope Foundation and exhibited his son’s work in over 60 cities worldwide. It was Bill’s dream that the Robert Pope Foundation continue on a permanent basis. The foundation’s board members, many of them personal and valued friends, shared his enthusiasm. Services of healing and of encouragement in creative and artistic endeavours continue to be carried out. The family would like to thank the Hants Community Hospital for its wonderful service. Doctors, nurses, palliative care workers and every member of the staff gave expert and loving care that helped Bill and his family through his final days.

William married Isabel Helena McKean. Isabel (daughter of Rev. G. R. McKean and Hattie Gunn) was born in 1920 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia; died on 30 Nov 2013 in Mount Denson, Hants, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Died:
    POPE (McKean), Isabel Helena
Age 93, died peacefully at home in Mount Denson, Hants Co., on Saturday, November 30, 2013, surrounded by the family who loved her. To all who knew her, Isabel leaves behind an example of a fully lived life, actively engaged to the end. Her sharp mind and glowing spirit will be deeply missed. Born in Shelburne, the youngest of six children, she was a daughter of the late Rev. G. R. and Hattie (Gunn) McKean. She grew up in various rural communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, where her father had pastorates. A graduate of Dalhousie University and the Maritime Business College, she taught bookkeeping at the Maritime Business School and at the Halifax County Vocational School prior to her marriage. Isabel was actively associated with her husband, Bill, in his pastorates in Bayfield, N.B. and Great Village. Isabel successfully blended family and career. Married for 57 years, she and her husband were a perfectly matched team. Sharing the same ideals and a huge capacity for work, they made big things happen. Together they founded and ran the seniors home, the Windsor Elms, and later, the Lancelot Press publishing company. As publishers, they helped bring the dreams of many local writers to print. They attracted a lifelong circle of creative spirits and encouraged their children to pursue their own artistic careers. Among the works they published was a book by their son, Robert, called \'Illness and Healing\', recording in words and in art, his experience with cancer. After their son’s death at age 35, Isabel and Bill established the Robert Pope Foundation and travelled widely touring Robert’s paintings in cities throughout North America and abroad. This Foundation continues to support, through scholarships and other programs, art and medical students at NSCAD and the Dalhousie Medical School. Isabel and Bill also sponsored and organized ten tours by the Second Mile Society, a Christian fellowship they founded, that took groups to many local and international places of interest. A life member of the U.C.W., Isabel was honoured by having the Great Village U.C.W. named for her. Her family held a special place in her life. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill; son, Robert; sister-in-law, Margaret; sister, Mildred (Paul Baird); brothers, Harold (Dorothy), Alex (Geraldine), Douglas (Charlotte), and Hector (Gladys). She will be remembered by family and friends for her cheerful disposition and kind nature. An active gardener, an avid reader, a skilled accountant, and an unsurpassed listener, Isabel combined qualities of wisdom and toughness. Her patience and understanding made her a much-loved mother, a respected businesswoman, and a generous member of her church and community. Private family interment will be held at a later date in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Donations in memory of Isabel may be made to Robert Pope Foundation.
