    HARVIE, John Leland

    Age 94, of Hantsport, passed away October 2, 2017, surrounded by family in Hants Community Hospital. Born July 6, 1923 in Hantsport, he was the eldest son of Leland and Zella (Hudson) Harvie.

    John attended school in Hantsport, graduating from grade eleven in 1939. Too young to enlist, he went to work with Canadian Pacific Telegraphs in Halifax as a teletype operator. He enlisted in the army in February of 1943 and after advanced training in the Signal Corps was sent overseas. At the end of the war in Europe he was stationed at Breda, Holland. He returned to his job with C. P. Telegraphs but due to his father\'s declining health came back to Hantsport to take over the family grocery store until 1977 when he sold the business and became a District Manager with World Book Encyclopedia, retiring in 1983. John served a term on Hantsport Town Council and was Chairman of the School Board. He was Harbour Master for fifteen years and a Deputy Issuer of marriage licenses for nineteen years. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion in 1946 and served one year as President and thirty years as Treasurer of Lucknow Branch 109. He was a believing, practicing Christian and lifelong member of the Hantsport Baptist Church, serving on boards and committees and as a Deacon. He was a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent for thirty years and spent his declining years doing visitation.

    John was still driving his own car at the age of 90, visiting shut-ins and "old people" in area nursing homes, and sometimes showing off by doing a few push-ups. He enjoyed swimming in the Avon River as a boy, skating, reading and fishing at the Harvie camp by Stillwater Siding with his brother and uncles. He helped establish the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, organized Red Cross blood donor clinics, was a long time supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party and chaired the Hantsport Memorial Scholarship committee.

    John was predeceased by his wife and the mother of his children, Evelyn Rose Hart (1993); second wife, Phyllis Selig (2007); sister, Margaret Forsyth Welt (2013). A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 12, in the Hantsport Baptist Church, Rev. Jennifer Riley officiating, with interment afterward in Riverbank Cemetery.

    John married Phyllis Manetta Wilkins on 4 Jul 1999 in Middleton, Annapolis, Nova Scotia.     Age 87, of Greenwich, Kings Co., died peacefully at home on July 3, 2013. Born in Hantsport, Hants Co., May 22, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Leland and Zella Harvie. She received her early education in Hantsport and represented the town as Princess in the 1948 Apple Blos­som Festival. She worked as a ste­nographer in Halifax until her marriage to Richard Forsyth. Margaret was devoted to her family and her community. She was an active member of Greenwich United Church as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the Greenwich Women’s Association, active in the United Way canvassing for charities, and a Brownie Leader, known to many children in the community as Aunt Margie or Brown Owl. She was a valued asset at Blomidon Nurseries for many years and she worked hap­pily in the orchards with her hus­band and later with her son in his market garden. Margaret always had a plate at the table or a bed made ready for friends and family who stopped by. Predeceased by her first husband, Richard Forsyth; second husband, William Welt. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville.

    HARVIE, Richard Hudson \'Dick\'

    March 21, 1925 January 25, 2019. It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Richard Hudson \'Dick\' Harvie, 93, of Sheffield Mills, on Friday, January 25th, surrounded by loved ones at home. Born in Hantsport, he was a son of the late Leland and Zella (Hudson) Harvie. Richard joined the RCAF in 1943 and served in Dunville, Ont. After his release in 1944, he joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment in 1945, training in Yarmouth and Aldershot. Following his discharge from the military in 1946, he attended Agricultural College in Truro, graduating in 1948 with his Farming Degree. He started his farming career in 1950 with two work horses, a cow and a plow. He was known for having the best corn. Richard was also active in the Royal Canadian Legion - Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning, serving in many capacities, including President and a member of the Color Party for many years. He had also held the position of Returning Officer for many provincial elections. He enjoyed playing cribbage, singing, cookies, gardening and hunting. He married Auleen Morine in 1948 and together they travelled to many destinations, including Cuba and Portugal. They were both avid skaters and he enjoyed swimming at Long Beach. He was predeceased by his wife, Auleen; sister, Margaret Forsyth and brother, John Harvie. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Jawbone Corner Cemetery.

    Richard married Auleen Ruth Morine on 8 Apr 1948 (United) in North Grand Pré, Kings, Nova Scotia.
