  1. 1.  Garnet Cranswick McDade was born on 20 Jan 1923 in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia; died on 23 Jan 2006 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia.

    Garnet was the third of seven sons of the late Ernest Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. Born in Parrsboro, he attended school there and later graduated from Moncton Business College. In his late teens, Garnet worked for a brief period at the Royal Bank of Canada in Parrsboro. In June 1943, Garnet joined Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company Limited of Hantsport, where he worked for 50 years, permanently retiring in June 1993. Starting as timekeeper, Garnet worked in various divisions of Minas Basin Pulp and Power, eventually becoming Vice-president, President and Chairman of the Board. In public life, Garnet served four years as a member of the Hantsport Town Council. In 1977, he became mayor of Hantsport, a position he held for nine years. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Hantsport Fire Department from 1943 to 1968. He remained an avid supporter of the HFD throughout his life.
    Garnet also served as President of the Hantsport and Area Historical Society. His business career included membership in the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, serving two years as Chairman of the Paperboard section of that organization. Provincially, he served on the Board of Industrial Estates; was a member of the Nova Scotia Business Capital Corporation, Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board and Nova Scotia Forestry Advisory Committee. Garnet was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorie (Turner), in June 2004; brothers, Eugene (1971), Vernon "Bill" (1973), and Doug (2005).

    Garnet married Doris Mildred Turner on 18 Sep 1944 in Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. Doris (daughter of Thomas Edward Turner and Rita Vivian Palmer) was born in 1922 in Hants Border, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 7 Jun 2004 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
