- George “Bubba” Thompson Jr., a beloved icon of Avonport, passed away on February 10, 2026.
Bubba was known far and wide for his wheeling and dealing ways, many said he could sell ice to an Eskimo. He had a larger-than-life personality, a wicked sense of humour, and a natural charm, especially with the ladies. If Bubba was around, laughter wasn’t far behind.
He loved hitting the open road on his motorcycle, fishing the lakes and especially heading out through Bishopville Road, and spending time with friends. His daily visits to the shop with Jamie, always delivering a French vanilla. It became a cherished routine. Bubba never passed without a wave and a nod, always wearing a smile and ready to help anyone who needed it.
Bubba had a deep love for animals, especially his dog, Red. He enjoyed playing TV Bingo and the VLTs, dropping in for short visits, and spending time in the garage with Bryan, watching him work (and offering commentary, of course). Saturday night classics with the guys and gals were among his favourite times.
He worked hard throughout his life, with employment at CKF, W.K. Sharpe & Sons, and later retiring from the Department of Highways. You always knew Bubba was coming because his blinged out truck announced his arrival long before he stepped out.
He was predeceased by his mother, Muriel (Clowry) Guptill; his father, George Sr. Thompson; his brother, Billy Thompson; his son, Reggie Miles; and his longtime friend, Muriel Merine.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Avonport Church on February 21st from 2:00–4:00 p.m. Further details will be shared by the family.
Bubba’s legacy lives on in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the countless lives he touched simply by being himself.
