    • SHERMAN, Lee Harrison

April 18, 1929 - August 29, 2020. It is with great sadness that the Sherman family announces the passing of Lieutenant Commander Lee H. Sherman, beloved father and devoted husband to Cora Mae Sherman of Hantsport. Born in Minnesota, Lee was a son of Ben H. Sherman and Ida Lyngstad. Lee grew up in a large family of nine siblings, all of whom predeceased him. Lee’s dad died at a young age, but their family’s presence in the community of St. Paul’s became well known as "Sherman’s Corner", where the community gathered around a grocery store, gas station and generator, invented by Lee’s father. Lee was a handsome, bright young man who obtained his Baccalaureate Degree in Science, with Honors in Math and Physics. He made a name for himself with a storied career as a Jet Pilot in the United States Navy from 1950-1970, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He went on to take up the Presidential call to duty, serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Commander Sherman flew the Douglas Navy AD5 Skyraider and the AD3 Skywarrior, flying off the aircraft carriers, USS Constellation and USS Kitty Hawk. He flew Air to Surface Combat, Reconnaissance Missions and transported Presidential and military dignitaries during the war. He earned the nickname "Deadeye" for his accuracy in flight and navigation and was recognized by the Admiralty for his ability to fly under adverse conditions. He was the recipient of many accolades, including the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement and the Presidential Memorial Certificate in recognition of his devoted and selfless consecration to the Armed Forces of the United States of America. It was while he was stationed in the port of Halifax, that he met his wife, Cora Mae, with whom he had three children. Following his retirement from the United States Navy in 1970, Lee re-invented himself as a real estate agent, commercial property owner, stock trader, and High School Teacher. He worked hard to provide for his family and placed high value on instilling his knowledge, principles and life skills to his children. The son of a preacher, Lee was a man of strong faith. He was one of the founding members of Fellowship Baptist Church in Dartmouth, and was an active member in the church, serving in a variety of capacities over 30 years. Lee was known as a kind, fearless man, with a reputation for large generosity of heart, his twinkling smile and love for his family. When least expected, he was known for his unexpected humor, breaking out into a silly dance. Sadly, later in life, Lee suffered from Alzheimer’s for 10 years, limiting his ability to communicate, move and interact meaningfully. He persevered in the face of great suffering and yet endured with such grace.
