    • DURLAND, Clare Herbert (LLB, QC) (Ret’d)

Age 79, died Sunday, May 27, 2018 in Orchard Court in Kentville, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Clare was born in Bear River, son of the late Percy H. Durland and Jenny F. Durland. He attended Deep Brook Elementary School and Hantsport High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia University in 1959, and an LLB degree from Dalhousie Law School in 1962. Clare was admitted to the Bar in Nova Scotia in 1962, and practiced law in Middleton from 1962 until 1997. He served as a member of the Barrister Council of Nova Scotia from 1971 - 1974, and was the President of the Western Counties Barrister Society from 1973 to 1975. He was appointed to the Queen’s Counsel in 1978. Clare married Joan Ann Webber in 1962. They resided in Middleton, where they cherished time with their family and many wonderful friends. Family time revolved around their many sporting and community interests, frequent debates, and quiet time at their cottage in Mahone Bay. Joan passed away in 1996. Clare married Blanche Patterson in 1998 and continued to reside in Middleton. Clare was very proud of his faith and he believed deeply in the importance of giving back to his community. He was a past Chairman of the Board of Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton Board of Trade, Middleton Development Corporation, Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations, and the Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. He was a warden, lay reader and Eucharistic Minister of the Anglican Parish of Wilmot, as well as a delegate to the Diocesan, Provincial and National Synods of the Anglican Church. Clare loved sports and was active athletically for his entire life. He was a member of the Hantsport Shamrocks Baseball Club in the 1950’s, and an active member and past President of Eden Golf and Country Club. He was an exceptionally accomplished hockey coach, inspiring the lives of many young local athletes. He won two provincial championships with the Middleton Mustangs Hockey Club, and coached for a season with the Valley Midget Wildcats AAA Hockey Club. He is a member of the Middleton Sports Heritage Wall of Fame. The family would like to acknowledge all of Clare’s wonderful friends who provided so much love and support during his battle with Alzheimer’s, and to especially thank his care givers at Orchard Court in Kentville for their extraordinary efforts which helped to make Clare’s final year comfortable and dignified.
