- GARLAND, George Whitfield \'Whit\'
Age 88 years, of Dykeland Lodge in Windsor and formerly of Hantsport, passed away on January 3rd, 2014, with family by his side. Born in Baddeck Forks, Cape Breton, on March 26th, 1925; he was a son of the late David Murray and Catherine Isabel (Buchanan) Garland. Predeceased by his brothers, John and Robert; sisters, Ethel, Isabel, Mabel, and Catherine; son, George, and granddaughter, Sarah. He started out his work career as a farmer and logger in Baddeck Forks, where he was also an avid hunter and fisherman. After many years on the farm, he moved his family to Hantsport where he worked various jobs. His last job was Minas Basin Pulp and Power where he retired with 28 years service as a carpenter. After retiring, he continued using his carpentry skills and other talents helping family and friends with various projects, including new homes for his sons; he always had a pencil and tape measure in his pocket. He enjoyed tinkering and was one of the first generation recyclers. He also planted, harvested, and preserved many vegetable gardens as well puttering around the flower garden. When not busy, he would be sitting on the front porch (dad’s hangout) watching television, reading, and talking to family when they stopped by.
