She was born August 16, 1908, in Mosherville, to the late James and Mary (Clark) Northup. She lived most of her life in Stanley, moving to Windsor Elms in 2005, at the age of 97. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Norman 'Buddie' Cochrane; granddaughter, Sheree Munroe; brothers, Roy, Earl, Victor, Vernon, Dudley and sisters, Emily MacDougall, Pauline McIninch and Marion Wellwood. Hortense was a member of Mosherville United Church and an active member of her community. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who made friends with everyone she met.
