- Erling Konrad Furhovde, 82, of Lunenburg, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday November 17, 2014.
Born in Norway he was a son of the late Wilhelm and Maria (Asen) Furhovde.
Erling was born in Kynesstrand, on the Hardanger Fjord, Norway on July 27th, 1932. At the age of eighteen in keeping with compulsory military training after high school he served nineteen months in the Norwegian Navy. Erling later went to sea on coastal and foreign Norwegian ships calling at ports the world over. He enrolled for three years in Navigation School where he attained his Coastal Master and Deep-sea Mate’s tickets.
Erling sailed fourteen months with Saguenay Shipping out of Montreal, followed by nineteen years with U.S. Gypsum out of Hantsport. Following a heart attack, and being unable to return to sea, he worked as a night watchman at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg for twelve years
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Borghild, Ingfred, brothers Viktor and Trygve all of Norway.
