    • BEAVER, John William - Struck By Loading Sling. - HANTSPORT, May 20 - After completing his work for the day in the hold of the Finnish steamer Peggy Thorden, loading pulpwood at the government wharf here, John William Beaver, 17, was climbing up the ladder to the deck of the ship when he was struck by a sling of pulpwood, knocked to the bottom of the hold and instantly killed. His back was broken by the blow of the sling, weighing about one ton. Beaver was born in Bathurst, N. B., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Beaver, but coming to Hantsport at an early age and was brought up by his aunt, Mrs. John Patterson. A member of the crew was operating the winch which controlled the loaded sling when it struck the young stevedore, picking him off the ladder. As he fell about 15 feet to the bottom of the hold, other workers ran and picked up the prostrate form. An emergency call was made for Dr. G. K. Smith, but the youth was dead when he was picked up. The deceased has a brother, George Beaver, residing in Hantsport; a sister, Elizabeth and a half-sister, Mrs. Stella Whalen, residing in Moncton. The funeral will be held in Hantsport.
