- Shirley Irene (Brown) Smith - 83, Lockhartville, passed away surrounded by family on June 16, 2023 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born at home in Cheverie, NS on December 1, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Greta (McLellan) Brown.
Shirley loved bowling and belonged to the league for many years in Windsor. She was a member of the Lockhartville Hall seniors club which gave her the opportunity to meet new and old friends, and apply her cooking skills. Playing tv bingo on Wednesday and Thursday nights was a passion she had, not to be interrupted by anything including calls from us girls. The call would always be cut short as she was in a hurry to play. She loved country music, blue grass, jambories and jam sessions. Her sense of humour was known to her friends and family, and she was commonly known as Squirly Shirley.
Mum married the love of her life Keith (Donald) Smith in 1960 and they spend 40 beautiful years together before his passing in July 2001. Together they enjoyed travelling, camping, attending blue grass festivals, and spending time with family and friends.
Mum loved her family very much, even when she didn’t show it. She was especially proud of her daughters, their spouses, and grandchildren in all their achievements in life. The recent pandemic was especially difficult on her as she is a very social person and made her feel isolated and alone like many others. She liked to maintain contact with extended friends and family with each passing made it more difficult as she was unable to see them physically. She could carry on a conversation with anyone she met regardless if the other person was willing or not, but it always brought joy to her to connect with people. Mum loved to vocalize her opinions on topics sometimes unfiltered but always coming from a good place, which made for interesting conversations even with strangers!
A private graveside committal service will be held with close family on Sunday, June 25th, 2023 at 11am, at the Lower Horton Cemetery.
