773 It is great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, Dale Anthony Connors, age 68, on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at home. Born in Hantsport, he was the son of the late Howard and Betty (Morgan) Connors.

Dale was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who will be deeply missed. He worked in construction his entire life. Spending the majority of his career at Lindsay's Construction, specializing in tilt up buildings. He was a safety officer and foreman. He could be a hard man to work for, but he loved what he did and his crew respected him.

Dad had few passions, but those he had, he enjoyed immensely. In his younger days, hunting with the boys at the camp was something he looked forward to every hunting season. He loved the woods. Having cut the majority of the trails in Falmouth, he loved being out on the ATV but most of all he loved spending time in his garage. That was his happy place and where he spent his final moments.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Earl and Winnifed Henshaw; sister-in-law, Gloria Sherman and his beloved golden retriever, Keely, his best bud.

The family would like to thank all the first responders who were dispatched and arrived so quickly, especially EHS and the Windsor Fire Department.

775 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tammy Lynn (McLellan) Doucet, age 65, of Belliveau Cove, NS. Tammy passed away on July 27, 2023 at her home in Belliveau Cove with family at her side after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born May 16, 1958, in Windsor, Nova Scotia she was the daughter of the late Ivan (Whitey) and Zelda (Starratt) McLellan.

Tammy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, as well as a kind sister, and a wonderful friend to all who knew her. She made friendships easily wherever she went. She had a love for animals, especially dogs and horses. Growing up in Hantsport, Tammy loved to ride and care for her horse, “Clipper”, never complaining about the “chores”. Kiwi, her loving canine friend, was by her side from the day she brought her home and a constant companion during her illness.

Tammy lived in Red Deer, Alberta for several years where her two boys were born. She returned to Hantsport, always considered home, maintaining many close friendships. With her sons Jeremy and Jacob, Tammy made a move to Saint John, NB, to take a job with Moosehead Breweries, where they lived for a number of years.

Tammy loved music! To play it, sing it or watch it, it didn’t matter. She enjoyed music festivals and met her husband, Tony, at a blue grass event!

She loved to travel but Covid-19 restrictions and cancer disrupted her plans to spend her retirement winters in Florida. Tammy was always at peace at the beach!

Her grandson Haylen was an incredible joy in her life, celebrating all his achievements with great pride.

Tammy could always find the positive in people, and was quick to compliment their strengths. She would often say, “Life is too short to be doing something you don’t like!”

The family appreciates and truly thank the many people who visited, shared memories, laughed, cried and cared for her during her illness! A very special thank you to the VON and Canadian Red Cross for their compassion and professionalism.

776 It is with deep sorrow that her family announces the sudden passing of Elizabeth Anne Cole (nee Harlow) on Thursday May 20 after a brief illness. Born in Saint John New Brunswick, Anne spent her childhood in Summerside PEI and Hantsport Nova Scotia graduating from Acadia University. Embarking on an adventure, Anne travelled to Lake Louise where she met her husband and lifelong partner, Charles Cole (Spike). After they married in 1967, Anne and Charlie settled in Toronto and then on to Aurora and Orillia.
Anne started her career as a secretary in downtown Toronto and she went on to banking and apparel finishing at Reebok Canada. After retirement, Anne and Charlie opened Cranberry House Bed and Breakfast where they hosted countless guests over a 20-year period. This provided opportunities to meet people from around the world leading to many lasting friendships.
Anne was full of energy and loved gardening, sewing, baking, decorating and was a crafty Euchre player. Anne loved searching for a bargain and her house is filled with treasures acquired at garage sales, auctions and antique stores. An accomplished artist, her paintings have hung proudly in galleries and businesses across Orillia. Anne loved to quilt, and she was pleased to see many people comforted from the cold with her designs. She was also very active in her community as volunteer at Soldier's Memorial Hospital, a member of the University Women's Club, a charter member of Probus, and the Monday Art Group. One of her last acts was to support the daily 11:30 am celebrations (Socially Distanced) on Museum Drive in Leacock Village which helped many have something to look forward to during Covid. A lot of her best memories in retirement came from involvement in these many organizations.

She was predeceased by her parents, Al and Bessie Harlow. She was completely devoted to her family and loved to surprise people with baking or thoughtful gifts. Her family was the center of her world and her frequent small acts of love will always be cherished.
Anne had true grit and a determined spirit as evidenced by getting both of her knees replaced at the same time. She was a treasure and will be greatly missed by her family and countless friends.
Due to Covid restrictions, it not possible to hold funeral services. As such, a celebration of life will be organized when we can meet safely to allow friends and family to say a final farewell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Soldier's Memorial Hospital Foundation. The family very much appreciates the kind words and condolences received during this difficult time. Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.com

777 It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Phyllis Gertrude (Wightman) Holmes, 96, died at home on Sunday, February 26, 2023. Born in Wingham, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Janie Viola (Campbell) and James Chester Wightman. She was a graduate of Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, London, and she received a Certificate in Public Health Nursing from The University of Western Ontario. She was posted with the Victorian Order of Nurses to Nova Scotia, which became her beloved home for more than seventy years.

Phyllis was a nurse at heart. When she took a break from active nursing to raise her children, she continued her lifelong passion for health care. She served on a number of health boards, including The Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia. She was humbled to have an award in her name created by the Valley Chapter, which was presented annually to a recipient for their outstanding contribution. She played an integral role in the establishment of Well Woman Clinics at Hants Community Hospital, and she was a member of Hantsport Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted participant in the volunteer program at Blanchard Fraser Memorial and Valley Regional Hospitals. On a couple of occasions, she served as nurse at school spring camps. She participated in the Terry Fox Run (or a portion thereof) for thirty-three years, her last run taking place just days before her ninety-fourth birthday. She lovingly supported several generations of her family through serious illness and end of life care. She had a gift for making people feel safe and comfortable.

Phyllis was an active community member, and she was honoured to represent Hantsport as Volunteer of the Year. She was a member of Avon United Church (formerly St. James United), where she sang in the choir for many years, and she was a life member of the United Church Women. Through the years, she volunteered with the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, and she was touched to receive an honorary life membership from the Hantsport and Area Historical Society.

Phyllis loved to write, which led her to enrol in creative writing classes at Acadia University in later years. She was a faithful correspondent, always in longhand, and she exchanged letters with family, friends and former classmates until she was no longer able. Never one to procrastinate, Phyllis was quick to send a thank-you note or to reach out to those experiencing a difficult time.

Phyllis was an avid gardener. This spring will be particularly poignant when her spectacular peonies and irises appear, almost magically, in her perennial beds.

Always an advocate of “not blowing your own horn”, Phyllis would, no doubt, cringe at all that has been written here. She was a remarkable, resilient woman, who cared deeply for others. She was our rock, our cheerleader, our compass, and we will continue to be inspired by her wisdom and her example.

Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, C. Courtney “Bud” Holmes; daughter, Jane Holmes; son-in-law, Austin Bleakney.

A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held at Avon United Church, Hantsport, on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 2 p.m., Rev. Paula Gale officiating (masks encouraged). A private interment will take place at Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.

785 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, John William Payzant, 90, of Bedford, Nova Scotia, on February 9th, 2021. He was born to parents, Allen Godfrey and Sadie Belle Payzant, on June 25th, 1930. He was predeceased by his parents, his beautiful wife, Shirley Elizabeth (Elliott), two brothers, Allen Frederick Payzant and Clyde Andrew Payzant and granddaughter, Tara Dawn Payzant.

How does one summarize the life of this man? Dad left the family farm at the tender age of fourteen, to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a successful businessman, with a grade nine education. Beginning his work life earning $18 a week, at a furniture store in Windsor, Nova Scotia, he quickly realized after marrying the love of his life, Shirley, in 1951, and with the addition of their first child, that he needed to do better. They moved to Lr. Sackville in 1952, to begin working for Ted B. Blackburn at Blackburn Shopping Centre, one of the first shopping malls in the province. After years of hard work and gleaning many valuable business tips from Blackburn, Dad purchased the basement of the Blackburn building and established a hardware store. In 1969, Dad had built that business to a level that allowed him to build a new store on Sackville Drive, where it still operates today. In 1970, he joined ranks with the Home Hardware family of stores, largely due to the company’s guiding ethic- that community and the common good is simply good business. Dad did business in an “old fashioned” way, built on the philosophy of maintaining a good relationship with his customers. When the local housing boom started in the early 1970’s, he extended credit to many young families, who could not otherwise afford to to pay for all of the building materials they needed, all at once. Lending a helping hand was commonplace for Dad, having a generous and compassionate heart for those who needed a hand up. Those early years were hard work, where he regularly logged 70 hours a week, and even if the store was closed, the phone would ring from someone with an urgent need for something, and off he would go to unlock the door and fill that need for his customer. Dad served in many groups and committees, some of which include the Kinsmen Club of Sackville, the Lake District Recreation Association, the Sackville Chamber of Commerce and was a 40 year member of the the Atlantic Building Supply Dealers Association, where he served as chairman in 1989/90. Many would say that our Dad helped to build Sackville to what it is today. Words we have heard from many of his friends and acquaintances, describe him as, a true gentleman, community builder and leader, icon of Sackville, pillar, helper, Sackville advocate, hands on, down to earth, fair. A man who gave from his heart, a great friend, whose kindness benefited so many. Our father has left a rich legacy, considering his greatest wealth to be his family. Dad never forgot his roots and deep love for his parents small family farm in Bishopville, Nova Scotia. Every weekend, we would make the drive to his family homestead where we as children, loved to play and explore “the farm”, helping feed the cows, while visiting with Gram and our Uncle Clyde. His grandchildren and great grandchildren all still love and enjoy the family property, that he so lovingly preserved for us. Dad has instilled in us the importance of honesty, hard work, fairness, generosity, supporting local business and most of all, family. We are beyond blessed to have had this gentle man to call “Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad. We have lost a
great patriarch and we will love you forever, Dad.

Internment shall be at the Bishopville Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cobequid Community Health Centre http://www.cobequidfoundation.ca or the Bishopville Baptist Church. Cheques can be made out to

792 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Zelda Louise (Starratt) McLellan, from Hantsport, on July 27, 2020, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, with loved ones by her side. Born in Hantsport, on April 26, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt and wife of the late Ivan (Whitey) McLellan.

Zelda was a very energetic lady who loved family, animals, music, people, and baseball. Zelda and Whitey were inseparable baseball icons who could be seen at ballparks anywhere in the Maritimes all the way to St. Petersburg, Florida! There are many stories told of more than one umpire, from Hantsport Shamrocks to Kentville Wildcat games, who would yell from behind home plate, “OK, Whitey and Zelda are here, let’s play ball!”

Her energies took her and the family twice to live in the States; Worcester, Mass. and St. Petersburg, Florida. Zelda spent most of her life in her beloved Hantsport as a homemaker and instilled a sense of love and pride in her children and expected nothing but best efforts from them. Her determination was evident when she went to work at the Drug Store in Hantsport long enough to make the money required to have a swimming pool installed in her backyard on William Street! Whitey, who couldn’t swim a stroke, would walk home from his FINA station on Main Street and have a dip before enjoying the lunch she always had ready.

Zelda loved music and especially enjoyed family/friend sing songs whether it was at home, the church, or at the camp in Bishopville! Her eyes would light up at the sight of any dog or cat and she had multiple combinations of both during her life. In later years she absolutely adored her little Shih Tzu, Rascal, and could be seen walking him through the streets of Hantsport.

Zelda was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Leonore (Bishop) Starratt; husband, Ivan (Whitey) McLellan and brother, Wilbur Starratt and granddaughter, Keri Price.

There will be no public service or visitation upon Zelda’s request. A private graveside ceremony will take place at the Riverbank Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Zelda may be made to Dykeland Lodge, Hantsport Baptist Church Building Fund, or charity of choice.

793 It is with great sadness we announce the passing on Eudora Ileen Patterson (Coldwell) on the Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, surrounded by her family and her loving husband of 73 years, St. Clair.

Born on November 22, 1927, in Springhill, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late John & Alice (Lewis) Coldwell.

As a child she moved with her parents to Avonport. In her teen age years she was a regular foot passenger on the M.V. Kippowa to Springhill. During the Second World War, she worked for the Canadian Red Cross in Wolfville. She also worked at the Wolfville Hospital and for a time was also employed at Acadia University. In 1947, she married St.Clair Harvie Patterson and resided in Hantsport. Eudora was president numerous times of the Ladies Auxillary of the Lucknow Branch 109, of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hantsport and also president of the Kings Daughter’s, Hantsport Baptist Church. Later in life she worked at the Wolfville Nursing Home, in the Kitchen. Eudora loved her family deeply and she instilled honesty and love to all of those she knew. She was a very kind and gracious lady, who would always be there to aid and shelter those in need. She often put her own needs after those she loved. She was soft spoken and always had the right words to say for every occasion. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her. Eudora with her own elegance and grace made our world a better place.

794 It is with great sorrow, we, the family of Judith Ann Sanford, age 79, of Berwick, announce her passing on November 11, 2020 at the Valley Hospice in Kentville. Born in Wolfville on March 17, 1941, Judith “Judy” was the daughter of the late Victor and Jennie Forsythe (nee Lockhart).

She spent many of her growing up years in Wolfville and in Berwick, before moving to Hantsport as a teenager. It would be in Hantsport that she married, raised her family, and made many close and lasting friendships over the next 50 years.

In her later years, Judy moved to Berwick to be closer to her grandchildren, who were so very special to her. In her working years, Judy was employed for several years at CKF and then at the NSLC store in Hantsport. Wherever she went, she was known for her warm personality, her wit, and her love of a good laugh. She kept her sense of humour right to the end, despite the suffering she endured from her illnesses. She didn’t care about pretenses, worldly things, or the entrapments of life - but always welcomed company and a chat and the banter that would most certainly ensue.

Back in the day, she was known for her homemade bread, rolls, and tea biscuits. Before her illnesses, she could most often be found doing jigsaw puzzles, playing her keyboard, or riding shotgun, being chauffeured all over the place by her ‘partner in crime’, Doug.

Visits from family, friends, and neighbours were what she lived for.

Besides her parents, Judy was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon Sanford; and brothers Cameron and Carl Forsythe.

Doug, Crystal, and Carol would like to express a deep gratitude to all those who helped us during mom’s illness. Very special thanks to the valley Palliative Care team, VON, Staff on Medical B at VRH, and to the Valley Hospice staff for their unwavering quest to ensure mom’s comfort in her final phase of life. Your kindness and empathy will not be forgotten.

In keeping with Judy’s wishes, cremation will take place. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 20, 2020 at 1:00 pm in the Riverbank Cemetery in Hantsport. In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to the Valley Hospice Foundation or a charity of choice.

795 It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce Greg’s passing after a courageous battle with cancer. Wallace Gregory “Greg” Maguire, age 76, of Bishopville, passed away on November 17, 2023, in Valley Hospice in Kentville, with his wife, Della at his side. Better known as Greg, he was born in the Truro hospital on June 23, 1947. He was the oldest of three children born to Nellie Laura Watson and Clarence “Mick” Maguire.

Greg attended school in Grand Pre, Newport Station and Hantsport and sea cadets in the red barn at the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. He was in his teens when he met Della, the love of his life, on their 18th birthday. Greg didn’t believe Della when she told him it was also her birthday, but in later years Greg loved telling people that Della was older… by 12 hours, although he would often leave that last part out! They were married on March 17, 1967, in Hantsport at the Anglican Church.

Sports were a constant in Greg’s life. He started out playing baseball in the 70’s for teams such as the Tides and the Mariners. He played broomball in Brooklyn as well as playing and coaching fastball in Avonport. He spent some time in the bowling alley, mixed league on Wednesday nights and a competitive men’s league on Thursday nights. He wore each uniform proudly. He was also an avid watcher of all sports on TV, such as hockey, baseball, darts, and bowling. Another favorite past time for Greg was fishing, whether it was for brook trout, shad on the Annapolis River, or fly in fishing in Northern Alberta to hook a monster rainbow trout.

Greg’s first job after getting married was on the gypsum boat out of Hantsport which travelled down the eastern seaboard to Florida. He then attended Kings Vocational School to become an electrician. Greg established a business called W.G. Maguire Electrical Ltd which was well known throughout Nova Scotia. During the late 70’s, Greg and Della opened a store front of the same name, where they sold appliances and lighting fixtures. In the early 80’s, the store moved to William Street across from the Hantsport post office. Later in life he became a red seal electrician which allowed him to work across Canada for himself as well as contract bidding for electrical companies.

Never taking the time to rest, Greg and Della built their three homes over the course of 20 years, starting in Hantsport in 1974 and then moving to Lockhartville. The last house, built on Ben Jackson Road, is now the office of Glooscap Ventures. The purchase of the house and surrounding land by Glooscap First Nation, was an integral part of establishing what is now Glooscap Landing. Greg has had a long involvement with Glooscap First Nation, as he was awarded the tender for building the first 2 homes on Smith Road in the late 80’s, which in turn opened the community for expansion.

In 2015, Greg was a double lung transplant recipient at the University of Alberta (U of A) Hospital in Edmonton. After Greg’s recovery, they returned to Nova Scotia in 2016, settling in Bishopville. Over the past 4 years, Greg had developed an aggressive form of skin cancer that required several surgeries and radiation treatments. Unfortunately, this cancer was caused by one of his anti-rejection drugs that was required after the lung transplant. Greg was very thankful for the opportunity to receive the transplant, which added years onto his life. He was able to enjoy his hobbies such fishing and tinkering in the garage. His greatest pleasure was having the chance to spend time with his family. Knowing that his children and grandchildren were “doing good” in their lives, gave him peace and contentment.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many health professionals on his care team at the U of A Hospital in Edmonton, specialists in Halifax, his Nurse Practitioner in Hantsport, the Palliative Care team, and those at the Valley Hospice in Kentville for their care and kindness.

In addition to his parents, Greg was predeceased by his sister, Debbie Maguire of Greenwood.

For those of you who knew Greg, you knew he was a very private man. Cremation has taken place and following his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greg’s name may be made to Valley Hospice in Kentville or a charity of your choice.

796 It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Emma Lily Horne, who peacefully departed this world on February 13, 2024, at the age of 81. Emma was surrounded by her loving family at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, NS, as she embarked on her final journey. Born in Bishops Falls, NL, NF, on October 16, 1942, Emma was the cherished daughter of Walter and Melitta Benson. She was the devoted wife of the late Fred Horne.

In 1979, our family faced a significant change as we moved from NF to NS, expanding from a family of four to a family of eleven overnight. This transition presented a significant challenge for any mother, but Emma faced it head-on without hesitation, demonstrating unwavering strength and resilience. The "Arnold Family" became our new family, and the bond formed during that time remains strong to this day.

Emma retired early from the business world and dedicated her time to volunteering for numerous organizations. Her tireless efforts were recognized when she was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award. She devoted 37 years to West Hants Ground Search and Rescue, and her selfless spirit extended to her involvement with St. Andrews Anglican Church, the Canadian Red Cross, and several other groups. Emma was always willing to lend a hand and embark on new adventures, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched.

She was predeceased by her brother Lester at birth, and her sisters Rhoda Sutton, Marion Elson, and Nancy Preston. Emma will also be dearly missed by her three four-legged fur babies, Sassyfrass, Gus, and Ozzy.

In accordance with Emma's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no funeral service. Instead, a celebration of Emma's life will be arranged and announced in the near future, most likely in mid to late spring. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity or group of one's choice. In the spirit of our dearly departed mother, we ask you to please be kind to one another and to treat others with compassion.

Emma Lilly Horne will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will continue to inspire and guide us as we navigate life without her physical presence. May her spirit live on in the hearts of those she touched, and may her memory be a blessing to us all. Rest in peace, dear Emma.

800 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Myrna Idella Campbell in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, on January 23, 2023. Born on October 14, 1935 in Middleton, to the late Thelma and Arthur Banks, she was the eldest of seven children. Myrna spent her first years in Inglisville before moving to Hantsport at the age of eight. She graduated from Hantsport High School and then finished Grade 12 at the old Windsor Academy, hitchhiking from Hantsport to Windsor every day with her good friend Sally. After Grade 12 Myrna ventured to Halifax for a career in nursing and graduated from the Victoria General Hospital, a proud graduate of the class of ‘57B. Myrna lived in “the alley” in the VG residence making lifelong friendships while there and she told the best stories about being a nursing student. Myrna worked at the Victoria General and reached the position of Head Nurse after working a year in Calgary. It was when she returned to Halifax, in 1960, that she met a handsome young engineer on a blind date. As they liked to reminisce, Mom wore a yellow dress and Dad wore a pinstriped suit on that date. After marrying in 1963 Frank’s career took them to Moncton, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg before retiring to Wolfville. Myrna loved her trips to Florida with Frank and combing the beach of Marco Island for shells. She loved to cook, bake and tend her vegetable garden. But most of all, she loved her family unconditionally. Myrna was an avid CBC listener during the Peter Gzowski, Stuart McLean and Anna Maria Tremonti years. In her 50’s, while living in Winnipeg, she took up cross country skiing and returned to work in the shoe department at Sears in Polo Park. As she tells it, this was the best job ever. She was predeceased by brother, Ronald; and sisters, Maxine and Doreen. Banks, Myrna Idella (I2618)
