She lived most of her life in Hantsport where she was a long-time member of the Baptist Church. Gladys was predeceased by Freeland, her beloved husband of 63 years, along with her siblings, Phyllis (Doug), Donalda (Fred), Mabel and Edwin. In accordance with her wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. | 685 | GREENLUND, Elsie Adelia Age 88 of Hants Border, Kings Co., passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on October 5, 1930 in Canning, Kings Co. She was a daughter of the late Omery and Esther (Daniel) Phillips. Elsie had been employed at Canadian Keyes Fibre for 40 years; being very active in the Union. She took great joy in her family and she enjoyed travelling, scratch tickets and bingo with her \'bingo buddies\', Joan Beckwith and Beth Schofield. Predeceased by her husband, Clyde \'Harry\' Greenlund; stepson, Perry Spidle; brothers, Charles and Foster; sister, Constance \'Connie\' Naugler. There will be no visitation by request. | 686 | GREENO, Gordon Roy, CD Age 89, of Berwick, formerly of New Minas, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Mount Denson, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Jane (Guptill) Greeno. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Lloyd, Alton “Jack”, Kenneth, Cyril, Jean Hiltz, Greta Buckler and Stella Benedict. Gordon’s employment history spanned 60 years. The 23 years serving in the Canadian Army as a Military Policeman was the highlight of his working experience. The opportunity to serve in several provinces of Canada, Europe and the Middle East, provided knowledge and confidence. Service with the military prompted a keen interest in military history resulting in the reading of many books on the subject. He would never attempt to hide his pride in being a member of “The Fraternity of Canadian Soldiers”. One of his expressions was “Soldiers – it’s not what they do, it’s what they are!”. After retiring from military service, he worked for the Canadian Department of Immigration from 1980-1991. He later served as a Commissionaire with the Kentville Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Wolfville. He was a proud Canadian and was always most appreciative of those who treated him with respect. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. | 689 | Greta "Pearle" Hill – of Hantsport, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 24, 2016 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Northfield, Hants County, she was the daughter of the late Merton and Blanche (Miller) Miller. Mom had various jobs over her lifetime, starting at Canadian Keyes Fibre, Hantsport, for 18 years. She attended Mack Business College and worked in Edmonton for five years. Her last job was Matron/Porter at Cutten House, Acadia University, from where she retired. Pearle was a beautiful seamstress, enjoyed knitting, playing cards (as long as she was winning), board games, puzzles and watching her Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. Mom enjoyed many bus trips over the years with her friends. She was a life time member of Hantsport United Church Women’s Group and a past member of Hantsport Elders. Pearle was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by siblings, Lorna, Maxine, Shirley, Willis, Arthur and Thelma; infant daughter, Sheila; son, Milton; great grandson, Quentin; son-in-law, Steve Spidle. | 690 | GRUVER, Adah November 2, 1924 - December 28, 2018. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Adah Gruver, formerly of Halifax and Hantsport. Adah moved to Halifax from Los Angeles, Calif., in 1983, having previously fallen in love with Nova Scotia while visiting her daughter who was studying at Dalhousie. She became a proud Canadian citizen in 1986. After working as an oncology nurse at the Victoria General Hospital (ret. 1985), she moved to Hantsport to be closer to her daughter. In 2006, the family pulled up roots and moved west to Kamloops, B.C., but she never stopped missing her Nova Scotia home and the friends she left behind. Daughter of Alex and Anna Coropoff, Jewish émigrés from Russia, Adah grew up in San Pedro, Calif. Following graduation from high school (1942), she became a Registered Nurse (1946), and subsequently earned her BA in public health (1965). Shortly after graduating from nurses’ training she met and married Bernard Gruver, an aspiring cartoonist (divorced, 1975). They had four children: Jean (deceased), Clifford (deceased), Nancy, and Allison, and lived in Van Nuys, Calif. Adah was a fiercely compassionate humanitarian which motivated her many contributions in nursing, and in her volunteer work. Known as \'Nurse Mom\', she was a school nurse at some of the most challenging schools in Los Angeles (ret. 1982) and founding member of the United Teachers of Los Angeles. She volunteered with VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) (1975-77), helping to improve health care for the disadvantaged. At the Victoria General Hospital, she was known for her compassion and sensitive attention to the emotional needs of cancer patients and their families. Always politically involved, Adah volunteered with the New Democratic Party, serving as President of Alexa McDonough’s Constituency Association (1987-1990), and office manager for two of her campaigns. She was also an active member of the CanGo Grannies, and board member of the BCSPCA, devoting many hours to \'her kitties\' at the Kamloops Branch. These organizations gave her purpose and were also a source of lasting close friendships. An extraordinarily active person, she was an avid reader, travelled the world, and drove herself to gym classes at the \'Y\' until two months before her death from complications of leukemia. Above all, Adah was unconditionally devoted to her family. She was immensely proud of her daughters and their families and was a loving and engaged grandmother and great-grandmother. Adah died at home in the arms of her daughters. She will be remembered for her energy, honesty, generosity, sharp mind, quick wit, and brilliant sense of humour. Adah believed that her legacy was in her family which truly included many good friends. The secret of life, she said, was to \'live it,\' and that she did - in spades. She will be missed. | 691 | GUPTELL, Lova Elaine Age 96, of Windsor/Hantsport, passed away peacefully April 19, 2014 in Dykeland Lodge in Windsor. She had been a resident there for the past eight years. Born March 28, 1918, in Lockhartville, to the late George and Eva (Boyd) Tracey, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell (Mary), Merton (Pauline), George (Louise), Glenn (Evangeline), Lawrence (Bessie); sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys (John) Shaw and Leah (Justin) King and half-brother, Murray Penny. Lova had a lifelong love of music and dancing. In her senior years, she played piano and fiddle for several groups and could often be found in the Dykeland great room playing a few tunes for her fellow residents. Her hobbies included oil painting, playing cards, crafting, and quilting. She created beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren as a memory piece for years to come. | 693 | GUPTILL, Clyde Richard Age 84 of Lockhartville, passed away on September 4, 2019 in his home with his beloved wife, Marion and daughter Brenda by his side. He was a son of the late Roy and Jessie (Kelly) Guptill. Clyde worked from an early age, starting with Haliburton’s Farm, then L. E. Shaw Masonary, onto Acadia Dairy, and finally retiring from Minas Basin Pulp and Power (Hantsport) after 25 years. Clyde always had a good story to share with others and he could remember details of events like no one else. He was liked by all and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be missed; but remembered with a smile - so to should we all remember him. | 695 | GUPTILL, Gordon Keith Age 82 of Avonport, Kings Co., passed away on August 27, 2019 in Valley Regional Hospital. Born in Hantsport, August 27, 1937 he was a son of the late Roy and Jessie (Kelly) Guptill. He was predeceased by his brothers, Albert, Vernon, Eldon, Stewart and Morris. Gordon received his early education in Avonport, Hantsport, two years in Lower Sackville, and then back to Windsor. He took a business course at Mack Business College, Kentville and on completion taught there for three years. He furthered his education at Teachers College in New Brunswick and attended summer school for 13 years to earn his Bachelor of Education. He taught school in Sackville, N.B. before he went West in 1966, teaching in LeCrete, Pioneered South Tallcree, taught in Steen River transferring to High Level in 1972. In his 43 years of teaching in the School Division he never missed a day, one year he went on sabbatical to attend the University of New Brunswick to earn his BA returned to High Level. In 1982 he was named \'Citizen of the Year\' by the Alberta Newspaper \'Echo\'. This honor granted to him by the way of their contributions, both through employment and personal lives made High Level a better community. Gordon was a church organist at High Level for 25 years. During that time many students were privileged to be taught private lessons by him. Retiring in 1999 he returned to his roots but continued to share his talents in church and around the communities. Upon his retirement he was the recipient of many awards, including one from the RCMP. Although he could play guitar his love for music was expressed through piano and organ. The outstanding music of various types produced on these instruments was beyond a doubt, played with heart and soul. He was a born-again Christian, Rest in Peace. | Guptill, Gordon Keith (I4523)

He had been employed with Canadian Keyes Fibre, Hantsport for 37 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Lockhartville Tug-of-War team when they became Maritime Champions. An outdoorsman, Maynard enjoyed cutting and splitting wood, fishing, hunting and trapping and was a member of the Kings County Trappers Association. | 698 | GUPTILL, Morris Leslie — 75, formerly of Avonport, Kings Co., passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011, in Orchard Court, Shannex, Kentville, following a lengthy illness. Born in Avonport on April 1, 1936, he was a son of the late Roy and Jessie (Kelly) Guptill. Private Guptill was with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He was chosen to participate in a special guard of honour to greet Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Colonel-in-Chief. Morris was stationed in several countries of the world while in the army for 22 years. Morris took great joy in his carpentry work and could be seen driving over the countryside on his tractor. He played the guitar and had a great singing voice. He was predeceased by brothers, Albert, Vernon, Eldon and Stewart. There will be no visitation, by request. Lewis ran the family farm in Falmouth until 1960, then moved to Halifax where he operated Barrowman Bros. Hardware Stores for over 10 years with his brother, Clarence. Lewis went on to work for Halifax Seed until his retirement in 1981, then moved back to Falmouth. Lewis is survived by his wife, the former Phyllis Potter; sons, Malcolm (Gail) and Walter (Debbie), both of Falmouth; daughter, Barbara (Fern) Gebeau, Edmonton, Alta.; stepsons, Ronald Potter, Yarmouth; Robert (Mary) Potter, Lower Sackville; Perry (Helena) Potter, Liverpool; stepdaughters, Sharon (Bill) Claridge, Lower Sackville; Susanne (Alan) McMahon, Wolfville; sister, Lena Sanford, Bedford; brother, Clyde (Jean) Manning, North Battleford, Sask.; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. | 705 | Hants Journal - April 1986 Hantsport postmaster Gilbert ‘Gib’ Veino was selected to represent all Hants County volunteers at the annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony. Veino was involved in multiple organizations and causes. He coached minor baseball, basketball and hockey teams; he was a Scout master for 12 years and a member of the Hantsport Municipal Recreation Commission for almost 20 years. Additionally, he served on the board of directors for the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, served 21 years with the Hantsport Fire Department (where he was secretary for 18 years), served three years on town council and on the Hantsport School Board, plus two years on the Hants Vocational School Board and EMO. He spent 10 years as the chairman of the March of Dimes campaign in Hantsport, and donated time to his church, St. Andrews Anglican in Hantsport, as well. Born in Parrsboro, son of the late John and Alphea (Bullerwell) Frizzle, he came to Hantsport as a child and lived here the rest of his life. A farmer, he was a member of the IOOF Lodge, Rebecca Lodge, Hantsport and the Hantsport Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Rhoda Davidson, Hantsport; one son, John, Fairview, Halifax County; one daughter, Mabel (Mrs. Arthur Morine), Vancouver; three sisters, Odessa (Mrs. Alex Murray), Hantsport; Mrs. David Fritz, Ontario; Nellie (Mrs. Leslie Brewer), South Westport, Maine; nine grandchildren. One son was killed in an airplane accident in 1948. Funeral will be held from Hantsport Baptist Church, pending arrival of the daughter, Rev. B.A. Cobham will officiate. | 708 | Harold Benedict, 93 3/4 of Port Williams, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2021 in his home. Born March 19, 1927, in Canard, grew up in Hantsport and lived his life in Wolfville; he was the son of the late Russell and Emily (Wile) Benedict. Harold was a valued member of the Port Williams Community. He worked hard from a very young age and at the tender age of 14-years, he worked in the woods, farming, construction and delivered milk with a horse and wagon. As he became older, he began work with Irving Oil, this spanned over 35-plus years. Once Harold retired from Irving Oil, he began volunteering at LRB Fabrications. He would help out in the shop with whatever was required and when things were slow, he could be found in the woodpile. Harold cut and split wood well into his 90’s. He loved to help people, especially his children. Harold played a huge part in the making of Port Williams Park. He spent endless hours helping to ready the area for play equipment that had to be assembled. After the park was done, he then spent many hours taking water down to make sure the flowers and tree made it. Harold was well-known and loved in Port Williams and could often be seen sitting on his swing watching and chatting with the passersby. Besides his parents, Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife, Greta (Schofield); daughter-in-law Deborah Benedict; brothers Don, Austin, Paul and Robert; sisters Pauline, Gertie and Mary. Born on April 14, 1944 in Lockhartville, he was a son of the late James and Ethel (Neil) Sisco. Harold was a very special brother who loved God and his family. He was a kind caring man who was loved by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ivan and sister, Margaret. | 710 | Harold William Gloade was born in Greywood, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, in 1920. His father, Newel Glade, was a Micmac Indian, born in LeQuille, Nova Scotia. His mother, Rose MacKay, was half Scotch and half German. The family moved to Truro, Nova Scotia in the spring of 1927 and lived exclusively with Micmac there, where he learned to speak Micmac fluently. He married Irene McDonald in 1938, enlisted in the Army in 1942, and was discharged in 1946. He moved to Ottawa and worked briefly at a department store, as a census clerk for the Department of Trade and Commerce, as a combine operator in Texas for two years, and in various jobs throughout his life. In 1983, he had his first short story published ad he as devoted his time to writing about people he remembers warmly. He now lives in Cambridge, Ontario. | 711 | Harry Frederick DAVIES — Wolfville Ridge Age 93, of Wolfville Ridge, passed away peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital on Sunday, January 1, 2023 with family by his side. Born in Hants Border on February 13, 1929, he was a son of the late James and Ola (Lockhart) Davies. In his younger years, Dad enjoyed skating and playing hockey and baseball. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and banjo. Dad learned the value of hard work being raised on a small farm in Hants Border. When the school day was over, he tended to the livestock and vegetable gardens and was responsible for bringing in firewood. Ironically, his love of burning wood to heat his own home led to an unfortunate fall and a fractured hip; however, he didn't get discouraged and vowed he would eventually be back in the woodpile. Dad attended school in Hants Border and Hantsport. He graduated from Hantsport High School and furthered his education, becoming a licensed electrician. He was a very proud tradesman. Dad was employed with H.B.M. Mechanical Limited in Wolfville which provided him and fellow employee Charles O'Leary (deceased) with opportunities to work in various places in Nova Scotia. Both had young families and saw a need for service work in Wolfville and surrounding areas. A decision was made to start their own business. In 1961, Davies & O'Leary Limited was formed and continues to operate today. For 57 years, Dad loved serving his many customers with electrical, plumbing, heating and appliance service. He appreciated each and every customer, working long hours including nights and weekends to provide service. Dad was committed to the trade and his craft. He had a very strong work ethic, which attributed to years of success of doing what he loved. Dad earned the title of being a well-respected tradesman in the area. Dad was never afraid of a challenge. In addition to working long hours with the business, he still found time for extracurricular activities. Dad coached Wolfville Minor Hockey, was involved with the Wolfville Lions Club, enjoyed watching NHL hockey, and loved taking us in his motorboat on the Minas Basin with trips to Boot Island to explore. After he retired, Dad spent many hours working outdoors at his property which brought him so much enjoyment. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Carlton; and sister-in-law, Mildred (King). | 713 | HARTLIN, Harris Ingram - 93, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 23, 2012 in Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. Born in Jeddore, he was a son of the late William and Lena (Cooper) Hartlin.Harris served in Second World War. He began working as a nurse with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and later went into combat serving overseas, most notably in the Battle of the Scheldt River Estuary. In his later years Harris could be found tending to the lighthouse at Horton Bluff, from where he retired. He was a quiet man who loved gardening, both vegetable and flowers, baking, especially apple pies, his grandchildren, woodworking and animals. Born in Hantsport, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Vera (Levy) MacInnis. Although her life ended on Monday, in many ways the quality of her life ended on January 4, 1972 when her husband Ted passed away suddenly at the age of 46, a death from which Verna never recovered. After his death in Ottawa, Ont., Verna moved to Kentville to be close to her family. Verna would continue to be a homemaker and mother in Kentville. She enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her sisters with whom she was very close. Besides her parents, Verna was predeceased by her husband, Ottis Frederick \'Ted\' Harvey; sister, Alicia Dauphinee; brothers, Ronald, Chesley and Keith MacInnis; her brothers-in-law, Harley Harvie and Burton Dauphinee and sisters-in-law, Olla MacInnis, June Ettinger and Marguerite Ettinger. | 718 | HARVEY, William \'Frank\' Age 91 years young, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019 in Truro. Frank lived there for over half of his life after growing up in Summerville. Frank had a long career after moving to Truro in 1951 starting at Acadia Trust as a general accountant, Program Manager at CKCL for 14 years and then 15 years owner/operator of Frank Harvey Travel. His contributions to both broadcasting and the travel industry was recognized by awards in 1977 and 1987 respectively. Frank’s social personality shone through his involvement in many organizations. He did not hesitate to give his time to Boy Scouts of Canada, Kinsman/K-40’s, Golden K and the Chamber of Commerce. He was humbled having been part of the group that was instrumental in the installation of the original lift at Wentworth Ski Hill. He organized and became the first President of Brule Beach Estates Limited and during his time in the Kinsmen he assisted in the original fundraising to build Victoria Park Pool. He was always most at home by the ocean either at the trailer or on a boat. He especially enjoyed any activity with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. \'Grampie\' was always there for a hug and a laugh anytime we needed. He was preceded in death by his parents; and younger brother, Hilton Harvey. Family will greet friends to share memories and stories from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, October 17th, in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Auleen Ruth Harvie, 89, of Sheffield Mills, on Saturday, June 20, 2015, surrounded by loved ones at home. Born in Port Williams on May 31, 1926, she was a daughter of Keith Wright Morine and Blanche (Palmeter) Wood. Auleen \'Momsy\' was most comfortable in her home, welcoming her family and friends. Her creative spirit touched on knitting, soap-making, quilting bees and making fresh baked loaves of brown bread, pies, bottles of jams and preserves. As much as she loved her home and being on the farm, she and Dick loved to get away as much as possible, spending many winter months in Portugal and Cuba. Also close to their hearts were their yearly trips with brother Jim (Marge) and sister Betty to various North American destinations in Jim’s motor home. Auleen spent her younger years in North Grand Pré. As a teenager, Auleen moved in with her much-loved Aunt Ev in Windsor where she finished school and later attended Windsor Academy and Windsor School of Business and worked in the Windsor Military Hospital. In 1948, she married Richard Harvie, Hantsport. In 1950, they bought their farm in Sheffield Mills. She was an active member of Trinity United Church, Canning and could often have been found busily working at many a tea or luncheon as well as yard and plant sales. She was also a life member of the Sheffield Mills Women’s Institute and an involved member of the Canning Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by brothers, Arthur Morine and Malcolm Allen.
