668 Gary Reid Thompson
Of West Petpeswick, NS, May 02, 1945 – August 30, 2023, Dad passed away in the early morning of August 30, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. He fought hard to have more time, and it would be wrong to say he lost his battle. We are grateful to have had this final summer together, filled with grandkids and warm days at home in West Petpeswick. The youngest of four, Dad was born to the late Pearl (nee Pemberton) and Reid Thompson in St. Croix. He grew up in Hantsport and married his high school sweetheart, Glenda (nee Hancock), twice. Together they raised four children and built a wonderful life on the Eastern Shore. Dad was a skilled carpenter. He remarked at how lucky he was to often work where he could look out and take in the beauty of the ocean. He loved hunting and fishing, and in his retirement, learned to play the upright bass. It was through these pursuits that he made many lifelong friends – spending time with some on the Miramichi, and others playing music. He loved a good game of crib and was an original member of the West Petpeswick snooker club, a Thursday night ritual he enjoyed for over 40 years. Dad was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 161. He will be missed by his neighbours, especially after a storm when he’ll no longer show up with his chainsaw or plow. We made a lot of memories through the years, and many were of time spent at Sunken Lake. After Mom and Dad retired, they traded the cottage for winters in Florida and road trips visiting friends and family in Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Ontario, and last fall a final trip to British Columbia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sibling, David Thompson, and brothers-in-law Barry Hancock and Ron MacFarlane. The funeral will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5 at First United Church in Musquodoboit Harbour with a reception to follow at the Royal Canadian Legion, Eastern Marine Branch 161 in Gaetz Brook.

In 1956 she met a young engineer, William \'Bill\' Gates, on a blind date. They fell in love and were married on May 17, 1958. They made their home in Hantsport where Eva realized her dream of having a family and devoted herself to being a loving wife and mother fulltime. In 1970, they left quiet rural life for Halifax where they settled into their long-time family home amongst a great group of neighbours on \'the hill\'. Eva was a consummate entertainer who loved to cook and bake. Her childrens’ birthday cakes were works of art and her chocolate chip cookies were known around the neighbourhood. Though she suffered from Parkinson’s disease for a number of years and was unable to eat solid food for the last year of her life, she would still whip up a batch of muffins or a celebratory cake for family. She was happy just to share a meal with the people she loved. Eva had a wonderful sense of style, evidenced by the way she decorated her home and by the way she dressed. She was an excellent seamstress and made beautiful clothes for herself and for her children, until they decided homemade were not as \'cool\' as store-bought. She loved music and enjoyed attending musicals, whether in New York, London’s West End, or closer to home at Neptune Theatre. She held season tickets to Symphony Nova Scotia for over 25 years and made many donations to the organization in that time. Her favourite place to vacation in the winter was Barbados, which she enjoyed until she was unable to travel. She was predeceased by brother, Eddie.

675 Gertrude Viola Ross – Johnson of Dartmouth N.S. born on September 6, 1925 in Kentville, King’s Co N.S.
It is with great sadness that we announce our mother’s passing from this life to the next on April 12, 2021.

Family was extremely important to our mom. Her parents were the late Daniel Lewis Ross originally from, East Preston and Mary Eliza States-Ross of Mount Denson NS.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of forty years, Beverly Clifford Douglas Earle Johnson, CAF, PO, R’td and their son Kenneth Richard Johnson.

Even though she was mother to ten children Gertrude also worked outside of her home. She was employed with CFB Shearwater, and department stores Kresge's (K-Mart) and Woolco (Walmart) in both Halifax, and Ontario. She was a conscientious employee who enjoyed her paid work

Gertrude believed in acting to right inequities. In the 90’s She advocated with the ABSW for the inclusion of black dolls on store shelves, she stood alone against Military Police twice when they tried to assert unnecessary authority over her young sons. She challenged school authorities, dissuading them from holding a school sponsored minstrel performance. She donated to the East Preston daycare ctr. and volunteered her time to canvass for the Alzheimer’s Society.

She was a Lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Owen Sound Legion Branch 6 and transferred her associate membership to Somme Branch 31 in Dartmouth when she returned to NS.

Gertrude was a committed Blue Jays fan, she also enjoyed a good card game or playing Bingo. She was a fan of Figure Skating and enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, word searches and until these last few years, she faithfully completed the local newspapers weekly Lexicon which she won in 2017 Our mom loved to write, and authored a book of poetry entitled, Along The Way. The self-publishing of her poetry was a source of great pride.

Predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Douglas, Albert (Sam), Eugene (Cliff), Laurie, Norris, Lawrence(Bo) and sister Alice Ross-Izzard.

Mom learned family values and a tireless work ethic from both of her parents who worked a farm in upper Canard NS and boarded seasonal laborers, all while raising their own family.

As a mother she knew how to make each child feel well loved and cared for. We will remember our Mother’s strength and pursuit of right. We remember her fearlessness when facing life’s big challenges or defending anyone of her family against obvious wrongs. She was a fair but firm disciplinarian, a bar of soap, a wooden spoon and the occasional rubber scrapper helped to keep all of us in line.

A tireless coach who cheered us on in our positive life choices, a good guide who knew the way ahead was hard, but by any means necessary, she encourage each of us forward.

We extend our sincere thanks to those caring health professionals who helped our Mom, especially as she coped with the after affects of another stroke in 2017. To Dr. M. McNeil and Dr. Hazelton, Community Health Nurse Raylene MacDonald all of the NS Hospital Geriatric Mental Health facility for their compassionate, respectful and thoughtful assistance. To Northwood Homecare personnel for your kind attention and VON community nurses especially Tanya Jarvis for going the extra mile for mom’s medical support. To Continuing Care professionals and special workers at the NS Rehabilitation Ctr. To those of Parkstone Enhanced Care who worked tirelessly to assist mom during her final years, Micah, Ashleigh, Marilyn ,Virginia, Yolander and Gladys. The OT and PT Professionals, Dietary, Social Work and all the Volunteers who contributed to Mom’s care during her four years at Parkstone.
